Commonalities in the Association of Behavioral Activation and Behavioral Inhibition with Problem Gambling and Alcohol Use in Young Adult College Students.

In a previous study of young adult college students (age 18-25), we found an association among 157 past year gamblers between gambling sever … ative affect was observed. Theoretical models such as Shaffer's Syndrome Addiction model posit that problem behaviors are expressions of a common underlying etiology. In the current paper, we present results from the previous database regarding the severity of alcohol use among 286 past year drinkers as measured by the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test. As …

Developmental Trajectories of Child Sexual Behaviors on the Path of Sexual Behavioral Problems: Evidence From a Prospective Longitudinal Study.

There is little information about the onset and the developmental course of child sexual behavior problems (SBPs), including sexually intrusive behaviors (SIBs). Using data from the Vancouver Longitudinal Study on the Psychosocial Development of Children, the current study examined the presence of distinct patterns of sexual development among children. A normative sample of preschoolers ( N = 354) with a small clinical subsample were followed from age 3 to 8 with repetitive measurements of sexual behaviors using a revised version of Child Sexual Behavior Inventory. Semiparametric group-based m

Peer Group Identification as Determinant of Youth Behavior and the Role of Perceived Social Support in Problem Gambling.

Gambling opportunities have increased rapidly during recent years. Previous research shows that gambling is a popular activity among youth, which may contribute to problem gambling. This study examined how social identification with online and offline peer groups associates with youth problem gambling behavior and if perceived social support buffers this relationship. Data were gathered with an online survey with 1212 American and 1200 Finnish participants between 15 and 25 years of age. Measures included the South Oaks Gambling Screen for problem gambling, and items for peer group identificat

Relationship between parenting stress profiles, work-family conflict, and adolescent problem behavior: Variable-centered and person-centered approaches.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent problem behaviors, including both internalizing (e.g., emotional symptoms) and externalizing difficulties (e.g., conduct problems, hyperactivity), are a significant risk factor in adolescent development. This study assessed the impact of maternal parenting stress on adolescent problem behaviors and explored mechanisms underlying this relationship. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to (1) identify potential profiles of maternal parenting stress, (2) examine differences in adolescent problem behaviors across these profiles, and (3) determine whether maternal work-family conflic…

Research Review: Conceptualizing and measuring 'problem behavior' in early intervention autism research - a project AIM secondary systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Some autistic children exhibit behavior that caregivers, clinicians, and researchers consider problematic. However, there is little consensus about the types of behaviors that should be treated as a problem and reduced via intervention. In autism intervention research, problem behaviors range from inherently harmful behaviors such as aggression and self-injury to nonnormative but not harmful behaviors associated with autism such as repetitive movements. Likewise, there are a variety of conceptualizations and measurement practices used to assess these behaviors. METHODS: In this se…

Psychosocial risk and protective factors for youth problem behavior are associated with food addiction in the Generation Z.

OBJECTIVE: Food Addiction (FA) and other well-known risk behavior as substance misuse tend to co-occur and may share similar risk and protective factors. The aim of this study was to assess the association between the diagnosis/severity of FA and psychosocial domains typically related to risk behavior syndrome in a large, nationally representative community sample of Generation Z underage Italian students. METHOD: The sample consisted of 8,755 students (3,623 from middle schools, 5,132 from high schools). A short version of the Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 was administered to evaluate FA. Ri

Multifaceted mental illness stigma and help-seeking behaviors among Latino older adults experiencing behavioral health problems.

OBJECTIVES: U.S.-based Latino older adult populations face disproportionate barriers to accessing behavioral health services. We examined associations between multifaceted mental illness stigma and help-seeking from different sources of behavioral health supports among understudied Latino older adults with behavioral health problems. METHODS: Data come from a cross-sectional survey that included U.S.-based Latino residents ages 50-86 (N=274; 2021). The survey measured mental illness biopsychosocial causal beliefs, treatment efficacy beliefs, and social rejection beliefs as multiple facets of

Childhood behavior problems and adolescent sexual risk behavior: familial confounding in the child and adolescent twin study in Sweden (CATSS).

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have found associations between childhood behavior problems and adolescent sexual risk behavior. Using a quasi-experimental approach, we examined the extent to which this association may be due to between-family differences (i.e., unmeasured familial confounds) not adequately explored in prior research. METHODS: We used data from a longitudinal, population-based cohort of young twins in Sweden (first assessment: age 9 or 12 years; second assessment: age 15; n = 2,388). We explored the nature of the association between symptom scores for attention deficit hyperactiv

High rates of violence, crime, academic problems, and behavioral problems in males with both early neuromotor deficits and unstable family environments.

BACKGROUND: It is commonly assumed that individuals with both biological and psychosocial deficits are more likely to become criminal, but there is surprisingly little empirical support for this assumption. We test the hypothesis that a group with biosocial risk factors are more likely to develop behavioral and academic problems in adolescence and violent criminal offending in adult-hood compared with groups with only biological or only social risk factors. METHODS: Hypotheses were tested on a sample of 397 male subjects, using obstetric and early neuromotor measures collected in the first ye

Treating children's aggressive behavior problems using cognitive behavior therapy with virtual reality: A multicenter randomized controlled trial.

This multicenter randomized controlled trial investigated whether interactive virtual reality enhanced effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to reduce children's aggressive behavior problems. Boys with aggressive behavior problems (N = 115; Mage  = 10.58, SD = 1.48; 95.7% born in Netherlands) were randomized into three groups: CBT with virtual reality, CBT with roleplays, or care-as-usual. Bayesian analyses showed that CBT with virtual reality more likely reduced aggressive behavior compared to care-as-usual for six of seven outcomes (ds 0.19-0.95), and compared to CBT with rolep

Parenting and Sibling Relationships in Family with Disruptive Behavior Disorders. Are Non-Clinical Siblings More Vulnerable for Emotional and Behavioral Problems?

Disruptive Behavior Disorders (DBD) are the most common mental health disorders in the school-aged child population. Although harsh parenting is a key risk factor in the shaping of DBD, studies neglect the presence of siblings and differential parenting. This study aims to compare: (1) parenting style and sibling relationship in sibling dyads of clinical families, composed of a DBD child and a non-clinical sibling, with control families composed of two non-clinical siblings; (2) parenting style, sibling relationship, and emotional and behavioral problems in DBD child, non-clinical sibling, and

Ultra-processed food consumption during pregnancy and emotional and behavioral problems in offspring.

Evidence on prenatal ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption and offspring psychopathological problems remains limited. Therefore, this study assessed the associations between UPF consumption during pregnancy and offspring emotional and behavioral problems. The potential impact of theoretically replacing UPFs with unprocessed or minimally processed foods was also examined using simulation models. The analyses included 201 mother-child pairs from the ECLIPSES study. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire at 12, 24, and 36 weeks of gestation. UPF consumption (%
