Two patients developed neurosyphilis after treatment of latent syphilis with intramuscular benzathine penicillin. The cases confirm recent investigations that show that neither benzathine penicillin nor procaine penicillin in the standard doses results in treponemicidal concentrations of penicillin in cerebrospinal fluid. Neurosyphilis can be treated effectively by intravenous benzylpenicillin infusions of 18 to 21.6 g daily for 15 days.

We have evaluated several local anaesthetics and hypnotics for their relative ability to influence hyperthermic cell killing. Bacterial cell survival following exposure to heat and anaesthetic was used as the assay system. The E. coli bacterium used was the unsaturated fatty acid auxotroph, K1060. The effects of psychotropic drugs and local anaesthetics on the fluidity of Escherichia coli cell membranes were examined. Chlorpromazine was shown to increase 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene fluorescence anisotropy, indicating that it decreased the membrane fluidity. This increase was significant at a temperature of more than 24 degrees C. Dibucaine, lignocaine, imipramine, tetracaine and procaine also increased the fluorescence anisotropy.

Thirty-five patients with acute inflammations of the soft tissues were treated with procain blockages of the cervical sympathetic ganglia. This treatment modality has helped cut down the patients' hospitalization period by 3-4 days and did not involve therapy with other drugs, this being an important factor for patients with antibacterial drug allergies, contributing to improvement of the efficacy of the suggested method.

It has been suggested that calcium interferes with the effect of the local anesthetics (Blaustein and Goldman, 1966). Experiments were therefore made with the anionic phenobarbital and the cationic procaine and chlorpromazine in high (18 mM/1) and in low (0,18 mM/1) calcium concentration. These experiments showed that the effect of drugs used, and of changes in calcium concentration were independent of each other.

The applicability of a five-minute hydrolysis method with 10% potassium hydroxide in an alcohol-water (80-20) mixture was investigated for the quantitative determination of certain esters (aspirin, benzocaine, benzyl benzoate, methyl paraben, phenyl salicylate, procaine hydrochloride, propyl paraben, salicylanilide and 0-salicylsalicylic acid) and salicylamide. The results indicate that the method is satisfactory for all but methyl paraben and propyl paraben.

Authors present a study on eleven patients affected with congenital syphillis treated during the last six years. All of them presented bone lesions in one or more locations. Familiar antecedents, mechanism of infection, clinical symptoms and radiological findings are analized, emphasizing the importance of prophylaxis and early treatment with procaine penicillin in a dosage of 50,000 U./Kg. day for at least ten days.
