Therapist verbal behavior early in treatment: relation to successful completion of parent-child interaction therapy.

We examined the role of specific therapist verbal behaviors in predicting successful completion of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) in 22 families, including 11 families that successfully completed treatment and 11 that discontinued treatment prematurely. The children were 3 to 6 years old and diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Chamberlain et al.'s (1986) Therapy Process Code (TPC) was used to measure therapist verbalizations during therapist-parent interactions during the initial clinical interview and the second treatment session. Results indicated that therapists' us

[Implementation of the unified model of presenting cancer diagnosis in Polish pediatric onco-hematology centers].

Presentation of full information related to diagnosis of children with cancer should be one of principles in pediatric oncology. Multidisciplinary approach to each newly diagnosed child and its parents contributes to improving this standard. The Polish Pediatric Leukemia and Lymphoma Group is engaged in these activities since 1998 and it resulted in implementation of several SIOP recommendations in most of Polish pediatric oncohematology centers. The unified model of presentation of diagnosis for a child, parents and family was of an importance and the efforts to introduce it in all cooperatin

Experiences of acute pain in children who present to a healthcare facility for treatment: a systematic review of qualitative evidence.

BACKGROUND: Pain is a universal and complex phenomenon that is personal, subjective and specific. Despite growing knowledge in pediatric pain, management of children's pain remains sub-optimal and is linked to negative behavioral and physiological consequences later in life. As there is no synthesis of these studies, it was timely to undertake a systematic review. OBJECTIVES: To identify, evaluate and synthesize the existing qualitative evidence on children's experiences of acute pain, including pain management, within a healthcare facility. INCLUSION CRITERIA TYPES OF PARTICIPANTS: Children

Touching moments: phenomenological sociology and the haptic dimension in the lived experience of motor neurone disease.

Currently, there is a relative research lacuna in phenomenological research into the lived experience of motor neurone disease. Based on a sociological research project in the UK, involving 42 participants diagnosed with MND, this article explores the potential of a phenomenological sociology for analysing experiences of this drastically life-limiting neurological disorder. Calls have been made for sociological researchers to analyse more fully and deeply the sensory dimension of the lived body, and this article also contributes to this newly developing body of literature. While the social sci

Recent service evaluation research on people with learning difficulties.

Substantial research on the evaluation of residential services for people with learning difficulties emerged over the last ten years in the UK. Reviews some of the major findings (N = 14). Their measures on the effectiveness of services were based on three components: the reduction of clients' challenging behaviour; the level of engagement between staff and clients; and clients' community involvement. An overall impression showed inconsistency and controversy in the first two components but a negative trend in the third. Discusses some methodological issues and suggests other components for se

[Individual psychotherapy--family therapy in children and adolescents].

The theoretical basis, the therapeutical approach and the methods of individual psychotherapy and of family therapy are presented. Possibilities and limitations, advantages and disadvantages of the two forms of therapy are discussed and illustrated by means of case histories. It is pointed out that the question of indication can only be solved if on the one hand the patient "individual" and the patient "family" are considered, and if the therapist with his theoretical and practical possibilities is included on the other hand.

Relation between outcome and the patient's initial experience of the therapist and therapeutic conditions in four treatment methods for phobic disorders.

One hundred and three phobic women not suitable for insight-oriented psychotherapy were randomized to either therapist-directed prolonged exposure therapy (PE), supportive therapy of dynamic type (ST), relaxation therapy (R), or basal therapy (B). Immediately after seeing their therapist for history taking and beginning of treatment, the patients were asked to report their experience of the therapist, of themselves in relation to the therapist, and of the therapy (Experience of Therapy Inventory, ETI). The patients were informed that the therapists would not see the ETI. The patients were rate

The Influence of Relationships Within Behavioral Weight Management Interventions: An Overview.

Behavioral weight management interventions have been shown to be effective for weight loss. However, a common challenge is difficulty in engaging with the public, participants, or service-users across the research continuum. User-provider relationships are key in weight management and may be integral to continuing engagement. This overview aimed to understand the nature of relationships within behavioral weight management interventions delivered in research studies and healthcare settings, how these may influence retention as well as potential relationship barriers and facilitators. Six databa

Breaking Silence, Bearing Consequences: Male Patients' Retrospective Narratives of Clinician-Perpetrated Sexual Abuse.

BACKGROUND: Sexual misconduct by health care clinicians is a type of sexual abuse with significant consequences for patients, although there is limited literature examining the experience of male survivors. AIM: To examine the effects of sexual misconduct experienced by male patients during young adulthood by the same healthcare clinician. METHODS: Using BERTopic modeling, a machine learning-based topic modeling method, we analyzed the narratives from records in a class-action lawsuit involving men aged 18-22 at the time of the abuse, who provided narratives years later that included reflect

Scorn Not Its Simplicity: Examining the Effectiveness of Simple Generalist Treatment for Personality Disorders.

Treatment guidelines for personality disorders have typically recommended specialized psychotherapeutic interventions. In this review, the author suggests that an intervention's effectiveness may be determined less by the specific method than by therapist competence, team culture, clinical process structure, and institutional context. The author argues that these elements determine variance in effectiveness between and within methods. Whereas initial studies of a specialized treatment may reflect the exceptional competencies of the treatment's developers and early adopters, in daily clinical p

Repairing with a warm heart: How medical practitioners cultivate affective relationships with clients.

Healthcare providers are often advised to manage emotions to adhere to professional feeling rules and avoid deep affection for clients, but there are situations where this would not apply. We offer an atypical case of a cleft lip and palate (CLP) treatment program where affectionate medical provider-patient relationships are encouraged. Participant observation in a CLP department, in-depth interviews with the medical team, and public online content from the official WeChat account of the department showed that a meaningful bond was formed through a contextual concordance of moral consideration

Refugees and asylum seekers who have experienced trauma: Thematic synthesis of therapeutic boundary considerations.

OBJECTIVE: Therapeutic boundaries are limits to appropriate behaviours within a therapist-client relationship (e.g. related to accepting gifts, self-disclosures, therapist neutrality and advocacy). Therapeutic boundary considerations are fundamental in the care of refugees and asylum seekers. Research on the experiences of therapists navigating such boundaries is sparse and warrants further exploration. The aim of this qualitative systematic review was to thematically synthesise literature regarding therapists' (psychologists, psychotherapists, counsellors) experiences of implementing flexible

Do Changes in Emotional States Predict Therapy Alliance in Dutch Male Offenders in Mandated Clinical Care?

Therapy alliance has been studied largely in voluntary psychotherapy but less is known about its predictive factors for positive alliance and treatment outcome in forensic populations. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between offenders' emotional states and therapy alliance. Moreover, we were interested in the predictive impact of emotional states early in treatment on alliance at 18 months into treatment. Self-ratings of emotional states and alliance by 103 male offenders, and therapist-ratings for therapy alliance were examined using hierarchical multiple regression anal
