BACKGROUND: Inflammation refractory to medical treatment frequently characterizes the course of Crohn's colitis, often leading to colectomy and need for a stoma. The influence of disease extent within the colon on prognosis and disease progress over time has not been studied so far.

RESULTS: 28 cases of arterial thrombosis, 18 arterial embolism, 16 venous thrombosis and twelve cases of nonocclusive intestinal ischemia were diagnosed. Central retinal artery occlusion is caused by embolism or changes in blood rheology and viscosity. In the past, different concepts of treatment were introduced. Main princip is to improve microcirculation by increasing the pressure of perfusion, the diameter of retinal vessels or decreasing blood viscosity. Success of therapy depends on the age of artery occlusion and the rate of persisting retinal perfusion. The different concepts of therapy and their results are discussed.

To define radiographic criteria, the radiographs of all patients diagnosed with coxarthrosis during the year 1951 were reviewed. Structural or joint space changes, evident radiographically in one of every seven cases in 1951, persisted at the time of the review in 1962. In the remaining cases, the diagnosis had been based upon the presence of osteophytic changes alone. Only one of 86 such cases reviewed in 1962 had structural or joint space changes. Uteroplacental and cerebral artery velocimetry is a predictive factor in the outcome of many high-risk pregnancies. Positive predictive value is good for intrauterine growth retardation (complications due to preeclampsia, diabetes or twin pregnancy). Velocimetry is also a predictor of adverse outcome in small for gestational age fetuses and for oligohydramnios but not for anemic fetuses of isoimmune pregnancies or post-term pregnancies.

A number of clinical characteristics of multiple sclerosis that may influence prognosis quo ad valetudinem are considered; onset with optic neuritis and frequency of recurrence less than 0.5/annum in the first three years of disease seem to be associated with a slower degree of deterioration (measured by the progression index). A prospective follow-up of depressed elderly patients is described. The subjects, 91 men and 173 women aged 60 years or over, were diagnosed as depressed in an epidemiological study using the DSM-III criteria. One hundred ninety-nine patients suffered from dysthymic disorder. The mean duration of the follow-up was 14.9 +/- 4.3 months. Outcome was not associated with sex and was good in 41% of the cases. Eighty-five patients with retinal emboli, visible ophthalmoscopically, were studied retrospectively. All the patients had presented with transient or permanent visual loss. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical course and angiograms of 15 patients with carotid siphon stenosis of 50% or greater. Fourteen had less than 50% stenosis at the origin of the ipsilateral internal carotid artery, and one had a greater degree of stenosis but underwent endarterectomy after an initial angiogram.
