Psychotherapy as adjunct in treatment of vomiting during pregnancy.

Adjunctive psychotherapeutic measures were used to treat ten consecutive pregnant women referred to a psychiatric consultation service because of severe intractable vomiting. In addition to customary medical measures, they received three types of psychotherapy: (1) supportive psychotherapy (establishment of positive relationship, frequent reassuring conversations, and encouragement of expression of thoughts and feelings); (2) hypnotherapy (trance induction and suggestions of comfort in the gastrointestinal tract, desirability of feeling of substance in stomach, and ability to retain and digest…

[Individual therapy as a special form of complex psychotherapy].

A combination of several psychotherapeutic methods will be meaningfull only if they are tuned to, and supplement, each other. Indiscriminate combinations may produce harmful effects. The choice of psychotherapeutic methods depends upon the objective that the psychotherapist desires to accomplish. In psychotherapy it is essential that all actions taken be governed by plans worked out in accordance with the particular objectives to be accomplished.

October 2026-academization of psychotherapy training in Austria.

According to the Psychotherapy Act 2024, a new psychotherapy training program will start in Austria in October 2026. This is a paradigm shift towards the academization of psychotherapy training. The new psychotherapy training program consists of three phases: various qualifications as the first training phase, a new master's program in psychotherapy at universities as the second training phase (500 study places at public universities across Austria will be funded annually by the government), and a postgraduate third training phase in one of the accredited psychotherapeutic methods or clusters …

Regulation-Focused Psychotherapy for Children With Emotion Dysregulation.

Emotion dysregulation is a transdiagnostic risk factor in childhood psychopathology that contributes to externalizing behaviors. To address this, regulation-focused psychotherapy for children (RFP-C) has been developed as a manualized, short-term psychodynamic intervention for 5- to 12-year-olds with externalizing behaviors rooted in underlying emotion dysregulation and affective conflict. The therapy follows a structured protocol comprising 16 child play therapy sessions and 4 parent sessions. Therapists use symbolic play, identify defense-based play disruptions, and adopt affect labeling to …

Caring for Trauma in Underserved Communities: Enhancing Psychotherapy.

Underserved communities-especially communities of color in the United States-face disproportionate exposure to trauma because of social and structural inequalities. These factors give rise to intergenerational transmission of trauma and inform cultural beliefs about psychotherapy and mental health care more broadly. Increasingly, individual psychotherapies developed in diverse settings, as well as community-based psychosocial interventions, show evidence of client engagement, acceptability, and efficacy. The authors describe upstream and immediate factors that increase vulnerability to trauma …

Bioethical guidelines of sexual-attraction change in psychotherapy.

This article reexamines ethical and scientific objections to psychotherapeutic interventions that alter clients' unwanted sexual attractions. While major mental-health organizations label such interventions as controversial, ineffective, and ethically problematic, recent studies demonstrate that some interventions can lead to changes in individuals' sexual attractions. These interventions significantly differ from the therapies criticized by these organizations. This article examines these criticisms and responds to them, identifies neuroscientific mechanisms that appear to be responsible for

Psychedelic-Related Psychosis: From Model Psychosis to Psychotherapy.

Psychotic symptoms are uncommon and non-specific adverse effects of classic (serotonergic) psychedelics such as lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), psilocybin, and mescaline. They can emerge during the acute phase of psychedelic drug effects, persist into the subacute ("afterglow") period, or, in rare cases, develop into long-term psychotic illness. Across all three scenarios, the symptoms can be deeply distressing due to their rapid changes, unpredictability, and significant adverse behavioral consequences.Psychedelics have a long history of use as research models for schizophrenia because of t

Gift wrapping: An element of Hypnotically Informed Psychotherapy.

Crafting clinical interventions that are effective is of paramount importance in the therapeutic endeavor. How one conceptualizes people, intra and interpersonal factors, and the interplay between mind, body, and spirit, informs, and influences how one intervenes. In this journal paper, the concept of "gift wrapping" is employed to convey a way of conceptualizing aspects of the therapeutic encounter and the presentation of therapeutic interventions. It is rooted in Hypnotically Informed Psychotherapy (HIP) (Staffin, 2024a, in press). With HIP, the conscious mind is depotentiated, thus freeing …
