Tracking the polio virus down the Congo River: a case study on the use of Google Earth in public health planning and mapping.

BACKGROUND: The use of GIS in public health is growing, a consequence of a rapidly evolving technology and increasing accessibility to a wider audience. Google Earth (GE) is becoming an important mapping infrastructure for public health. However, generating traditional public health maps for GE is still beyond the reach of most public health professionals. In this paper, we explain, through the example of polio eradication activities in the Democratic Republic of Congo, how we used GE Earth as a planning tool and we share the methods used to generate public health maps. RESULTS: The use of GE

A U.S. Emergency Manager's View of the Water Systems Crisis in Gaza.

Before October 2023, Gaza's water sector already faced severe and persistent challenges, including aquifer contamination, damaged infrastructure, and limited system reliability. The ongoing armed conflict has intensified these conditions, causing unprecedented destruction and the near-total breakdown of water and wastewater services. The conflict itself continues to obstruct remediation, mitigation, and broader efforts to address the longstanding public health crisis. Many residents now depend on brackish well water, limited desalination output, or imported bottled water because local systems c

The Impact of Armed Conflicts on the Prevalence, Transmission, and Management of Infectious Diseases: A Systematic Review.

Armed conflicts persist despite global peace efforts, driven by cultural, religious, and ethnic divisions. These conflicts significantly impact public health by exacerbating the spread of infectious diseases and disrupting essential healthcare systems. This study aimed to assess the complex relationship between conflict and the prevalence, transmission, and management of infectious diseases in the affected populations. This study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to conduct a comprehensive search across five databases (EBSCO, Pu

Does digital infrastructure improve individuals' body weight? A quasi-natural experiment based on "Broadband China" policy.

Whether digital infrastructure development improves population health outcomes remains empirically contested. This study exploits China's "Broadband China" pilot policy-implemented in staggered batches across 117 cities during 2014-2016-as a quasi-natural experiment and employs a difference-in-differences (DID) design with seven waves of the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS, 2010-2022) to estimate the causal effect of broadband infrastructure expansion on individual body weight and weight-related health inequality. The main findings are threefold. First, the "Broadband China" policy significan

Critical challenges and impediments affecting rural physicians during a public health emergency.

OBJECTIVE: Disaster preparedness has become a health policy priority for the United States in the aftermath of the anthrax attacks, 9/11, and other calamities. It is important for rural health care professionals to be prepared for a bioterrorist attack or other public health emergency. We sought to determine the barriers impeding rural physicians from being prepared for a human-induced disaster such as a bioterrorist attack. METHODS: This study employed a qualitative methodology using key informant interviews followed by grounded theory methods for data analysis. Semistructured interviews wer

Public-private partnerships for health: their main targets, their diversity, and their future directions.

The global burden of disease, especially the part attributable to infectious diseases, disproportionately affects populations in developing countries. Inadequate access to pharmaceuticals plays a role in perpetuating this disparity. Drugs and vaccines may not be accessible because of weak distribution infrastructures or because development of the desired products has been neglected. This situation can be tackled with push interventions to lower the costs and risks of product development for industry, with pull interventions providing economic and market incentives, and with the creation of inf

Women's Health Perceptions and Beliefs Related to Zika Virus Exposure during the 2016 Outbreak in Northern Brazil.

During the 2016 Zika pandemic in Brazil, women's perceptions of infection risk, ability to adhere to Zika prevention strategies, or access to services following exposure were not emphasized in the public health response. Women in Fortaleza, Brazil, responded to a questionnaire on social factors related to perceived Zika risk and access to health care in June 2016. Data were coded using prespecified categories, and response frequency was reported. Of 37 respondents, most reported a lack of public services to support mosquito control (n = 19) or delayed access to reproductive health care (n = 14

State Power and COVID-19 Vaccination Efforts.

The COVID-19 pandemic provides a unique opportunity to assess how different forms of state power shape public health outcomes during a global crisis. Drawing on Michael Mann's distinction between infrastructural and despotic power, we construct a typology of states and evaluate its predictive power for COVID-19 vaccination rates in 161 countries across three pandemic periods (2021, 2022, 2023). Our analysis shows that infrastructural power-a state's capacity to coordinate society and implement policy-was associated with higher vaccination rates, regardless of its level of despotic power. Dementia care gaps in Sub-Saharan Africa: A scoping review of technology, environmental, community perspectives, and financial constraints.

Dementia is a growing public health challenge in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where population aging is expected to substantially increase the regional burden of dementia in the coming decades. Rapidly changing demographics, underdeveloped health infrastructure, and limited awareness of dementia symptoms and care pathways contribute to delayed diagnosis, treatment, and care. This scoping review examined literature published from 2021 to 2025 to identify gaps in dementia care across four key domains: environmental and social factors, technological capacity, community-based caregiving, and financia

Dental care as a vital service response for disaster victims.

Hurricane Katrina's impact on the infrastructure of public health and the health care system in the affected areas was unprecedented in the United States. Many dental offices were flood-bound in New Orleans and over 60% of dental practices were partially or completely damaged in affected counties in Mississippi. Most needs assessments conducted during the initial recovery operations did not include questions about access to oral health care. However, the extent of the destruction of the health care infrastructure demonstrated the need for significant state and federal support to make dental tr

Developing a shared sepsis data infrastructure: a systematic review and concept map to FHIR.

The development of a shared data infrastructure across health systems could improve research, clinical care, and health policy across a spectrum of diseases, including sepsis. Awareness of the potential value of such infrastructure has been heightened by COVID-19, as the lack of a real-time, interoperable data network impaired disease identification, mitigation, and eradication. The Sepsis on FHIR collaboration establishes a dynamic, federated, and interoperable system of sepsis data from 55 hospitals using 2 distinct inpatient electronic health record systems. Here we report on phase 1, a sys
