Testicular cancer (TCa) is the most common cancer among 15- to 34-year-old males. Treatments are highly effective, which help foster approximately 98% 5-year survival rate. There are very few known causal factors of the disease (e.g., cryptorchidism and family history), thus possibly limiting primary prevention methods. Secondary preventative measures, on the other hand, most notably testicular self-examination (TSE), are well-known and are promoted to help prevent late-stage diagnosis of TCa. However, debate ensues as to whether or not TSE provides any benefit. In light of a recent systematic

In this article we use the case of the West Nile virus (WNV) to investigate the social construction of public health emergencies (PHEs) and the subsequent changes in public health governance that they instigate. Informed by medical sociological literature on the social construction of illness, science and technology studies, and risk and disaster literature, we create a conceptual framework for connecting health and crisis. Our investigation of the WNV analyses PHEs as brief, but vitally important, moments in which a 'crisis' is co-constructed between states, affected populations and disease v

Web scraping involves using computer programs for automated extraction and organization of data from the Web for the purpose of further data analysis and use. It is frequently used by commercial companies, but also has become a valuable tool in epidemiological research and public health planning. In this paper, we explore ethical issues in a project that "scrapes" public websites of U.S. county jails as part of an effort to develop a comprehensive database (including individual-level jail incarcerations, court records and confidential HIV records) to enhance HIV surveillance and improve contin

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the occurrence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Salmonella and the associated virulence genes among farmed chickens.
METHODS: Cloacal swab samples were collected from apparently healthy and diseased chickens and were cultured for Salmonella using conventional methods. The isolates were serotyped using slide agglutination tests and were examined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the virulence genes invA, stn, svpC and pefA and the outer membrane protein-encoding genes ompA and ompF. Screening for ESBL resistance was performed using the

BACKGROUND: In most countries registered nurses play a key role in vaccination. The number of recommended childhood vaccines has increased and several other new vaccines are in the implementation phase or are being considered for public programs. Little is known about nurses' perceived usefulness of recommended vaccines and no recent study has assessed nurses' opinions regarding new candidate vaccines for the public programs.
OBJECTIVES: The main purpose of this survey was to assess nurses' opinions regarding already recommended and new candidate vaccines for public programs; based on nurses

The potential for spread of infectious diseases associated with mass gatherings is well recognised. Hajj, the unique annual mass gathering of over 2 million Muslims from all over the world, presents enormous challenges to the authorities in Saudi Arabia. They have a comprehensive programme updated annually, to ensure that all aspects of Hajj rituals are conducted safely and without major incident. The inevitable overcrowding in a confined area of such large numbers increases the risk of respiratory infections. Of these 'Hajj cough' is the most frequently reported complaint and is caused by a v

We describe our experience with a hotline which was set up to deal with enquiries relating to a secondary school mass vaccination campaign against meningococcal disease. Three thousand, three hundred calls were received over 6 days, mostly from the general public but also from contacts of the school and health practitioners. The hotline served as an important means of providing consistent advice and reassurance to the public and reduced the burden of calls to hospitals and public health units.

Objectives: To develop awareness of benefits of point-of-care testing (POCT) education in schools of public health, to identify learning objectives for teaching POCT, to enable public health professionals and emergency responders to perform evidence-based diagnosis and triage effectively and efficiently at points of need, and to better improve future standards of care for public health practice, including in limited-resource settings and crisis situations. Methods: We surveyed all U.S. schools of public health, colleges of public health, and public health schools accredited by the Council on E

OBJECTIVES: Migration is a complex and contested topic of public debate. Professionals working in public health must negotiate this politicised complexity, yet few studies examine the perspectives and practices of public health professionals in relation to migrant health. This study seeks to redress this by exploring how migrant health is conceptualised and addressed by public health professionals after a key transitional point in the reorganisation of public health in England and the public vote for the UK to leave the EU.
STUDY DESIGN: This is a qualitative in-depth exploratory study.

For over 75 years, community water fluoridation has been implemented as a public health strategy to reduce dental caries. While early studies suggested dramatic reductions in dental caries, recent evidence indicates that the benefits of community water fluoridation are more modest. Concurrently, concerns have grown over rising rates of enamel fluorosis and possible links between fluoride intake and lowered intelligence in children and thyroid hormone disruption, even at exposure levels found in fluoridated regions. This first part of this paper discusses the historical context and current scie

Food-borne botulism is a rare but serious disease caused by ingestions of neurotoxin [botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs)] produced as a result of the growth of the bacterium Clostridium botulinum in foods before consumption. The disease is rare in the United Kingdom, and only 62 cases have been recognized between 1922 and 2005. This report provides a brief review of C. botulinum and food-borne botulism as well as descriptions of the six episodes (33 cases with three deaths) of this disease that occurred in the United Kingdom between 1989 and 2005. The six incidents illustrate the importance of the

When confronted with complex situations of hoarding and severe domestic squalor, small municipal communities and their partners frequently feel overwhelmed due to limited resources at their disposal. Stakeholders often report these situations to Public Health Service and seek their support. In order to facilitate more effective and coordinated actions, the main stakeholders involved (municipal, fire, police, public health and the regional health center) must agree on the most appropriate intervention strategies. An agreement providing services for the management of severe cases of domestic squ

In Tlaxcala, Mexico, 80% of the children who died from diarrhoea or acute respiratory infections (ARI) in 1992-1993 received medical care; in more than 70% of cases it was provided by a private general practitioner (GP). The present study evaluated the quality of case management by private and public GPs to children under five years of age with diarrhoea and ARI. During the clinical observation, the treatment and counselling given to the mother were assessed with the WHO guidelines as reference standard. A total of 41 private and 40 public GPs were evaluated for the management of diarrhoea, an

In recent decades, tickborne disease (TBD) cases and established populations of medically important ticks have been reported over expanding geographic areas, and an increasing number of tickborne bacteria, viruses, and protozoans have been recognized as human pathogens, collectively contributing to an increasing burden of TBDs in the United States. The prevention and diagnosis of TBDs depend greatly on an accurate understanding by the public and healthcare providers of when and where persons are at risk for exposure to human-biting ticks and to the pathogens these ticks transmit. However, nati

Fortifying salt with diethylcarbamazine (DEC) is a safe, low-cost and effective strategy to eliminate transmission of lymphatic filariasis. DEC-fortified salt has been used successfully in pilot projects in several countries and has been used operationally by China to eliminate lymphatic filariasis. The successful use of iodized salt to eliminate iodine-deficiency disorders is encouraging; similarly, fortified salt could be used as a vehicle to eliminate lymphatic filariasis. Despite the potential programmatic advantages of fortifying salt with DEC instead of undertaking mass administration of

Myths abound in the practice of health care, death, and disease. Akin to the old adage of swallowing camels and straining gnats, the myth that mass fatalities cause epidemics of disease following natural or other disasters is alive and well. Despite the findings of observers, microbiologists, epidemiologists, and other scientists, even medical doctors and public health professionals lend support to the ancient belief and rush into mass graves or mass cremations the bodies of those victims of trauma in a disaster. Putting this myth to rest depends on use of information concerning the transmissi
