Relative genetic efficiency of 50 Me V protons as derived from analyses of chromosome anomalies in human lymphocytes.

Based on quantitation of chromosome anomalies observed following in vitro irradiations of human lymphocytes, RGE values were derived for 50 Me V protons relative to 180 kV X-rays. These values indicated 50 Mc V protons to be generally of similar efficiency as X-rays in producing chromosome anomalies in human lymphocytes. However, detailed analysis by types of anomalies observed yielded different RGE values. Thus, 50 Me V protons were found to be 15 percent less efficient than X-rays in producing two-break exchange type aberrations. And inversely, they were about 15 percent more efficient in pr

Plants experiencing chronic internal exposure to ionizing radiation exhibit higher frequency of homologous recombination than acutely irradiated plants.

Ionizing radiation (IR) is a known mutagen responsible for causing DNA strand breaks in all living organisms. Strand breaks thus created can be repaired by different mechanisms, including homologous recombination (HR), one of the key mechanisms maintaining genome stability [A. Britt, DNA damage and repair in plants, Annu. Rev. Plant. Phys. Plant Mol. Biol., 45 (1996) 75-100; H. Puchta, B. Hohn, From centiMorgans to basepairs: homologous recombination in plants, Trends Plant Sci., 1 (1996) 340-348.]. Acute or chronic exposure to IR may have different influences on the genome integrity. Ionizing radiation for maternal medical indications.

Ionizing radiation should be considered an avoidable exposure although all pregnant women receive some radiation from their environment. The potential effect of ionizing radiation on the fetus is determined by the dose and the timing of the exposure with growing interest in the potential risks of transgenerational effects of radiation as an epigenetic phenomenon. High dosage exposure is very unlikely in routine situations such as occupational, diagnostic, or therapeutic exposures. Individual diagnostic radiation procedures (fetal dosage <50 mGy), are not associated with any increase in lethali

Small de novo CNVs as biomarkers of parental exposure to low doses of ionizing radiation of caesium-137.

The radiological accident in Goiania in 1987 caused a trail of human contamination, animal, plant and environmental by a radionuclide. Exposure to ionizing radiation results in different types of DNA lesions. The mutagenic effects of ionizing radiation on the germline are special concern because they can endures for several generations, leading to an increase in the rate of mutations in children of irradiated parents. Thus, to evaluate the biological mechanisms of ionizing radiation in somatic and germline cells, with consequent determination of the rate mutations, is extremely important for t

Breast cancer risk among the survivors of atomic bomb and patients exposed to therapeutic ionising radiation.

Radiation induced breast cancer is a highly complex phenomenon, which most likely involves the accumulation of several genetic and epigenetic events. Studies of atomic bomb survivors, patients who underwent multiple fluoroscopic examinations during treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis, those who received therapeutic radiation for benign breast disease, such as acute post-partum mastitis, or those with an enlarged thymus or skin haemangioma and patients with Hodgkin's disease treated by mantle radiotherapy established that the risk of breast cancer increases with exposure to ionising radiation.

Stem cell damage after chemotherapy- can we do better?

Therapy-related myeloid neoplasms are unintended and unwanted complications of cytotoxic chemotherapy and radiation. Unlike other environmental toxin-induced malignancies, exposure to the inciting agent is required to eradicate a primary and life-threatening cancer. In this review, we will focus on the biochemical mechanisms that lead to therapy-induced myeloid malignancy. This includes discussion of known mechanisms by which cytotoxic chemotherapy and radiation induce genetic mutations and promote evolution and expansion of malignant hematopoietic clones. Mechanisms by which the hematopoietic

Chromosomal radiation sensitivity in ataxia telangiectasia long-term lymphoblastoid cell lines.

Elevated frequencies of spontaneous chromosome breakage and hypersensitivity to radiation induced chromosome damage are characteristic findings in cultured lymphocytes and skin fibroblasts of patients with ataxia telangiectasia (AT). To determine whether long-term AT lymphoblastoid cells (B-lymphocytes) which do not express spontaneous chromosomal instability, exhibit increased chromosomal radiation sensitivity, four AT lymphoblastoid cell lines were exposed to various doses of 250 kVp X-rays during G2. At doses of 25 and 50 rad, the AT cells exhibited a 2-3 fold increase in radiation damage r

Gut Microbiomics-A Solution to Unloose the Gordian Knot of Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation.

The Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear accidents have called forth a growing body of research on their biological aftermaths. A variety of wild organisms, including primates, birds, fish, insects, and worms are being studied in the affected areas, with emerging morphological, physiological, and genetic aberrations ascribed to ionizing radiation. Despite the effort in surveying Chernobyl and Fukushima wildlife, little is known about the microorganisms associated with these radiation-contaminated animals. The microbiota, especially the gut commensal, plays an important role in shaping the metabolic

Successful Radiotherapy for Metastatic Basal Cell Carcinoma to the Parotid Gland in a Patient With Gorlin-Goltz Syndrome.

Gorlin-Goltz syndrome (GGS), also known as nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS), is an autosomal dominant condition characterized by a predisposition to multiple basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and other neoplasms and is commonly associated with pathogenic variants in the PTCH1 or SUFU tumor suppressor genes. However, the absence of these genetic markers does not preclude the diagnosis due to the variable genetic expression of the syndrome. Diagnosis relies on a set of established major and minor criteria, particularly when genetic testing fails to identify the typical pathogenic variants

Medical radiation exposure and breast cancer risk: findings from the Breast Cancer Family Registry.

Moderate to high-dose radiotherapy is known to increase the risk of breast cancer. Uncertainties remain about the effects of low-dose chest X-rays, particularly in individuals at increased genetic risk. We analyzed case-control data from the Breast Cancer Family Registry. Self-reported data on therapeutic and diagnostic radiation exposures to the chest were available for 2,254 breast cancer cases and 3,431 controls (1,556 unaffected sisters and 1,875 unrelated population controls). We used unconditional logistic regression analyses to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI)

Unusual resistance to ionizing radiation of the viruses of kuru, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and scrapie.

The titers of several preparations of kuru. Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease, and scrapie viruses were reduced by only 1/10th or less by high doses of gamma radiation of 50 kGy and by only 1/10th-1/1000th or less for 200 kGy. This unusual radiation resistance of the two human viruses further links them with the scrapie virus and suggests that the genetic information of all three viruses is considerably smaller than that of any other known viruses of mammals.

Genetic alterations in thyroid tumors from patients irradiated in childhood for tinea capitis treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to ionizing radiation at young age is the strongest risk factor for the occurrence of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). RET/PTC rearrangements are the most frequent genetic alterations associated with radiation-induced PTC, whereas BRAF and RAS mutations and PAX8-PPARG rearrangement have been associated with sporadic PTC. We decided to search for such genetic alterations in PTCs of patients subjected in childhood to scalp irradiation. DESIGN: We studied 67 thyroid tumors from 49 individuals irradiated in childhood for tinea capitis scalp epilation: 36 malignant (12 cases

[Roentgen therapy of dermatoses: indications and hazards].

Indications for radiotherapy of benign dermatoses have decreased markedly during the past decades. The remaining indications are reviewed. Side effects of ionizing radiation therapy are discussed in detail, with special emphasis on radiodermatitis and radiation cancer of the skin, mutagenic and genetic effects of x rays, and induction of carcinogenesis of interanl organs. Thyroid cancer is used as an example to discuss modern theories of radiocarcinogenesis and risk coefficients of various organ systems. Guide lines for radiotherapy of benign dermatoses are proposed.

Gene expression signature discriminates sporadic from post-radiotherapy-induced thyroid tumors.

Both external and internal exposure to ionizing radiation are strong risk factors for the development of thyroid tumors. Until now, the diagnosis of radiation-induced thyroid tumors has been deduced from a network of arguments taken together with the individual history of radiation exposure. Neither the histological features nor the genetic alterations observed in these tumors have been shown to be specific fingerprints of an exposure to radiation. The aim of our work is to define ionizing radiation-related molecular specificities in a series of secondary thyroid tumors developed in the radiat

Dual-polarized metasurface design enabled by characteristic mode theory: integrated synergistic radiation and scattering functions.

Synergistic radiation-scattering integration holds great value for secure communication, electromagnetic stealth, and anti-interference wireless systems. Nevertheless, the intrinsically incompatible electromagnetic responses of radiation and scattering complicate the pursuit of a satisfactory trade-off in their collaborative co-design. Leveraging characteristic mode theory (CMT), this paper proposes an automated topology optimization strategy to facilitate the high-efficiency design of dual-polarized radiation-scattering integrated metasurfaces. The radiation and scattering responses of the me

Radiation Metabolomics: Current Status and Future Directions.

Human exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) disrupts normal metabolic processes in cells and organs by inducing complex biological responses that interfere with gene and protein expression. Conventional dosimetry, monitoring of prodromal symptoms, and peripheral lymphocyte counts are of limited value as organ- and tissue-specific biomarkers for personnel exposed to radiation, particularly, weeks or months after exposure. Analysis of metabolites generated in known stress-responsive pathways by molecular profiling helps to predict the physiological status of an individual in response to environmen

RBE of α-Particles for Delayed Production of Colonies by Irradiated Yeast Cells.

The effect of delayed colony appearance by irradiated cells exemplifying genetic instability is confirmed to be more expressed for diploid wild-type yeast cells characterized by a sigmoidal shape of the survival curve and capable of recovery from radiation damage in contrast to isogenic haploid strain incapable of diploid-specific recovery and characterized by the exponential form of the survival curve. The dependence of the delayed appearance of colonies by diploid yeast cells on the dose of ionizing radiation shows more pronounced manifestation after the action of α-particles (RBE = 4.2 ± 0.

[131 iodine: medical use. Carcinogenic and genetic effects].

131 radioiodine is used for treating patients with thyrotoxicosis and differentiated thyroid carcinoma. Its therapeutic effect is related to the radiation dose delivered to the thyroid tissue. The radiation dose is related to its radioactive concentration (ratio between the radioactive uptake and the mass of functional tissue) and its effective half-life. Follow-up studies of patients exposed to 131I did not demonstrate any tumorigenic effect of 131I on the thyroid gland in adults, but do exclude such an effect in children. The dose delivered to other tissues is relatively low, and significant

Biological effects of ultrasound.

In summary, there are many deficiencies and gaps in the current data base for ultrasound-induced bioeffects. More information is needed on the effects of low intensity ultrasound, the effects of pulsed ultrasound, the relationship between peak intensities and average intensities of pulsed ultrasound, the possibility of cumulative effects, and the possibility of long-term effects. Also, very little of the data, either positive or negative, has been verified by other laboratories. Although there is presently no evidence to indicate that diagnostic ultrasound involves a significant risk, the evid
