Radioactive pollutants in soil continuously expose humans and contribute to the radiation dose to the public. Thirty-eight soil samples were collected from the District Gurugram, Haryana (India), and analyzed using a high-purity germanium detector-based gamma ray spectrometry technique. Potassium-40 (40 K), thorium-232 (232Th), and radium-226 (226Ra) activities were measured in soil samples. A spectroscopy method of alpha particles with the track geometry parameters in CR-39 plastic nuclear track detectors is proposed. The relationship between the track registration sensitivity and incident angle of each etch pit is analyzed. The components of alpha particles emitted from radon, thoron and 241Am can be roughly separated when the etching level is not exceeded beyond the range in CR-39. This work aims at improving the dose assessment accuracy from exposure to indoor radon and thoron.

When a glove box containing PuO2 fails, such as by rupture of a glove or a vinyl bag, airborne contamination of plutonium (Pu) can occur. The yields of unstable chromosome aberrations induced in human lymphocytes by beta particles from tritiated water ( HTO ) have been measured.
