OBJECTIVE: To understand how women and historically underrepresented minority medical students perceive radiology as a potential career choice.
METHODS: Medical students representing a broad spectrum of radiology exposure from a single institution were invited to participate in a mixed-methods study. Participants completed a 16-item survey about demographics and perceptions of radiology. Ten focus groups were administered to probe decision making regarding career selection. A 'Universal Radiation Protection System' (URPS) is proposed in this paper with a novel philosophy, concept and methodology. It applies a 'Standardised Integrated Dose System' (SIDS) based on health risk limits for workers and public, no matter where they live in the world. The URPS assigns equal radiation health risk limit to an individual by integrating doses from national natural background (NBG) radiation and from man-made sources. For public, the SIDS integrates doses from planned exposure situations within a dose limit (e.g. 1 mSv y(-1)) on top of the mean national NBG dose in a country.

AIM: To report on trends in career choices for radiology among UK medical graduates.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One and 3 years after graduation, and at longer time intervals thereafter, postal questionnaire surveys were sent to all doctors who graduated from UK medical schools in 1974, 1977, 1980, 1983, 1993, 1996, 1999, 2000 and 2002. Doctors were asked to specify their choice of long-term career and to identify factors influencing their choice. Employment details were also collected. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between June 1993 and July 1996, a single institution placed 350 implanted chest ports in 346 patients by means of the subclavian vein approach. Women newly diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer have an early-stage disease that can be effectively treated.
