Vaccination models of delivery for refugees and migrants: a global scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Refugees and migrants face inequities in healthcare and vaccination access. Diverse vaccination programs have been implemented globally among refugee and migrant populations targeting vaccine hesitancy and other barriers to vaccination. The aim of this scoping review was to provide an overview of current models of vaccination delivery of COVID-19 and other vaccines to inform best practices of vaccine delivery for refugee and migrant populations. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines. Eleven electronic databases, including SCOPUS, Embase, Medline, a…

Mental health problems among Syrian refugees in Nordic countries: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: The Syrian refugee crisis has led to significant population displacement, with many seeking refuge and asylum in Nordic countries. While these countries offer safety and stability, the resettlement process combined with the refugees' own traumatic experiences can exacerbate existing or precipitate new mental health issues. AIM: This systematic review aims to comprehensively analyse the literature on mental health problems among Syrian refugees resettled in Nordic countries, exploring their prevalence and associated factors. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conduct…

Agreement for posttraumatic stress symptoms among unaccompanied young refugees and professional caregivers.

Background: Prevalence rates for posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in unaccompanied young refugees (UYRs) are high. Research with biological parents indicates low agreement rates between self and caregiver reports for PTSS, although caregivers play an important role as gatekeepers to ensure appropriate treatment. Objective: This study examines youth and caregiver agreement on the endorsement of different trauma types, the PTSS severity score and symptom clusters, as well as the potential association between youth factors (age, comorbidity, and duration in facility) and disagreement.Method: T…

Group Schema Therapy for Refugees with Treatment-Resistant PTSD and Personality Pathology.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with complex forms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may benefit from schema therapy. While a small number of studies point to the effectiveness of individual schema therapy in refugees with PTSD, no evidence on group schema therapy (GST) in refugees exists. To illustrate and advocate for the use of GST in refugee patients with treatment-resistant PTSD and comorbid personality pathology, a case report is presented. Presentation. The case concerned the treatment of an East African female refugee who survived sexual and physical violence and loss as a child, as the h…

Tuberculosis infection prevalence and treatment completion among refugees in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Identifying and treating tuberculosis infection (TBI) among refugees at elevated risk for developing TB disease is crucial for TB prevention and elimination in the United States (U.S.). However, current evidence is limited by small sample sizes, inclusion of refugees from only a single country, and/or reliance solely on the tuberculin skin test (TST). METHODS: Refugees in a large cohort study from 10 U.S. sites underwent evaluation for TBI using three available tests: the TST and two interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs). This study calculated TBI prevalence and assessed tubercu…

A Community-Defined Approach to Address Trauma Among Cambodian Immigrants and Refugees.

Asian American and Pacific Islanders are one of the fastest growing and most diverse groups in the United States. Yet, they are often aggreg … alth repercussions on an entire cultural group by way of intergenerational trauma. As the number of refugees and displaced individuals continues to grow, there is an urgent need for programs such as the CWP to prevent the lasting effects of trauma.

Psychotherapy readiness domains as predictors of psychotherapy outcome in trauma-affected refugees.

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about predictors of psychotherapy outcome in trauma-affected refugees. Knowledge on outcome predictors can help clinicians identify patients prior to treatment who are not likely to benefit from standardized psychotherapy and take additional measures to adjust treatment to the individual patient. Given the dynamic nature of psychotherapy readiness domains, they represent potential targets to be worked with in therapy in order to improve outcomes. METHODS: Psychotherapy readiness domains (locus of control, cognitive functioning, motivation for therapy, and persona…

Systematic review of depression and suicidality in child and adolescent (CAP) refugees.

Child adversity and trauma has been shown to have incredible detrimental effects physically and mentally in the subsequent adult life. Importantly, refugee minors are especially vulnerable to trauma. Thus far there are numerous studies examining cohorts of child and adolescent refugees and their impact on mental health in general and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but none have focused specifically on depression and suicide.  The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed for the current systematic review. 25 articles out of 266…

Neural correlates of emotional reactivity and regulation in traumatized North Korean refugees.

Refugees often report heightened emotional reactivity and emotion regulation difficulties and are at high risk for mental health problems. Given that refugees are repeatedly exposed to traumatic events that may cause changes in the brain, the present study examined neural correlates of emotional reactivity and regulation and their associations with refugee features (e.g., cumulative trauma) and the severity of psychiatric symptoms (e.g., post-traumatic stress disorder [PTSD]) in North Korean (NK) refugees. Forty NK refugees with trauma exposure and varying levels of psychopathology and 41 heal…

Consanguinity rates among Syrian refugees in Lebanon: a study on genetic awareness.

Consanguineous marriage is a deeply rooted tradition in the Arab world. Such marriages are linked to higher rates of recessive genetic diseases. During the Syrian conflict, which started in 2011, around one million Syrian individuals became refugees in Lebanon. This study assessed the consanguinity rates among Syrian refugees living in Lebanon up to three successive consanguineous generations, and examined refugees' awareness of the possible consequences of consanguineous marriage and their attitudes towards consanguinity. Their knowledge of, and access to, premarital screening was also assess…

Syrian female war refugees: preliminary fibromyalgia and insomnia screening and treatment trends.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic disorder characterised by chronic widespread pain, fatigue and sleep disturbances with higher prevalence in females. Psychological factors contribute largely to FM. Although women war refugees represent a fragile population that is prone to psychological distress, FM was not studied in this population. OBJECTIVE: The current study had three objectives: (1) to screen FM and insomnia prevalence and severity, (2) to study the correlation between FM severity and insomnia and (3) to study FM treatment trends and their concordance with the guidelines among…

Treatment of sleep disturbances in refugees suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Sleep disturbances are often referred to as the hallmark of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Although PTSD is prevalent in refugees, studies on sleep disturbances in trauma-affected refugees are scarce. This article presents the results of two studies: a systematic review of the literature on treatment of sleep disturbances in adult trauma-affected refugees and a study of the role of sleep disturbances in the PTSD symptom structure. Study 1, the literature review, identified five studies on treatment of sleep disturbances: four studies were on pharmacological treatment and one study on m…
