Shame over tooth loss: between psychological suffering and structural inequality in Chilean oral health.

The article analyzes how tooth loss among older adults is not merely a clinical issue but a social and emotional phenomenon marked by shame, stigma, and structural inequality in oral health in Chile. From a qualitative, narrative approach with a descriptive scope and a hermeneutic (interpretive) orientation, 12 interviews were conducted in the commune of Cerro Navia, in the Metropolitan Region of Chile, between August and September 2024. The narratives reveal that tooth loss affects self-esteem, identity, and social participation. Shame manifests in behaviors such as covering the mouth, avoidi

Men who have sex with men (MSM): representations and practices for the prevention of sexually transmitted infections.

This is a descriptive, qualitative study, supported by the Theory of Social Representations, in the structural approach. The objective of this study was to analyze the social representations of sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention practices in the group of men who have sex with men (MSM). One hundred homosexual men, aged 18 to 29 years, participated in the study, who answered a questionnaire for social and practice characterization, and a free evocation form, according to the inducing term "STD prevention". Free evocations were analyzed with prototypical and similarity analysis tech

Generative language models exhibit social identity biases.

Social identity biases, particularly the tendency to favor one's own group (ingroup solidarity) and derogate other groups (outgroup hostility), are deeply rooted in human psychology and social behavior. However, it is unknown if such biases are also present in artificial intelligence systems. Here we show that large language models (LLMs) exhibit patterns of social identity bias, similarly to humans. By administering sentence completion prompts to 77 different LLMs (for instance, 'We are…'), we demonstrate that nearly all base models and some instruction-tuned and preference-tuned models displ

Loneliness Is Associated With Lower Self- and Clinician-Rated Levels of Personality Functioning.

Personality disorders (PDs) are associated with interpersonal dysfunction, loneliness, and reduced social embeddedness. This study investigates loneliness and social network size in association with self- and clinician-rated personality functioning regarding the DSM-5's Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD). Eighty psychiatric inpatients including participants with and without PDs completed the Semi-structured Interview for Personality Functioning, the Level of Personality Functioning Scale - Brief Form, the UCLA Loneliness Scale, and the Social Network Index. Patients with PDs re

Opioidergic tuning of social attachment: reciprocal relationship between social deprivation and opioid abuse.

Individuals misusing opioids often report heightened feelings of loneliness and decreased ability to maintain social connections. This disruption in social functioning further promotes addiction, creating a cycle in which increasing isolation drives drug use. Social factors also appear to impact susceptibility and progression of opioid dependence. In particular, increasing evidence suggests that poor early social bond formation and social environments may increase the risk of opioid abuse later in life. The brain opioid theory of social attachment suggests that endogenous opioids are key to fo

Cosmeticorexia: What It Is, Where It Comes from, and Why It Matters.

Cosmeticorexia (also called dermorexia) refers to a culturally reinforced preoccupation or obsession with achieving "flawless" skin that can lead to excessive, age-inappropriate, or compulsive use of cosmetic products and procedures. The phenomenon is intensified by the medicalization of beauty, the growth of "cosmeceutical" markets, and social media platforms that reward routine-based content and appearance-focused self-presentation. Emerging signals indicate that exposure and uptake are happening at increasingly younger ages, raising concerns about irritant and allergic contact dermatitis, s

Skill-based treatment of interfering stereotypy.

To address the high-rate, interfering stereotypy of three autistic students, a chained schedule for treating stereotypy was combined with skill-based treatment for challenging behavior. Treatment consisted of progressively widening contingencies to differentially reinforce functional communication, toleration, and accurate task completion with escape from instruction to engage in stereotypy. Stimuli were correlated with periods during which instructions were presented and motor stereotypy was redirected (S-) and periods during which escape was provided and motor stereotypy was not redirected (

Demons, nature, or God? Witchcraft accusations and the French disease in early modern Venice.

In early modern Venice, establishing the cause of a disease was critical to determining the appropriate cure: natural remedies for natural illnesses, spiritual solutions for supernatural or demonic ones. One common ailment was the French disease (syphilis), widely distributed throughout Venice's neighborhoods and social hierarchy, and evenly distributed between men and women. The disease was widely regarded as curable by the mid-sixteenth century, and cases that did not respond to natural remedies presented problems of interpretation to physicians and laypeople. Witchcraft was one possible exp

If all your friends jumped off a bridge: the effect of others' actions on engagement in and recommendation of risky behaviors.

There is a large gap between the types of risky behavior we recommend to others and those we engage in ourselves. In this study, we hypothesized that a source of this gap is greater reliance on information about others' behavior when deciding whether to take a risk oneself than when deciding whether to recommend it to others. To test this hypothesis, we asked participants either to report their willingness to engage in a series of risky behaviors themselves; their willingness to recommend those behaviors to a loved one; or, how good of an idea it would be for either them or a loved one to enga

Assessment of stimulus generalization gradients in the treatment of self-injurious behavior.

Descriptive and experimental analyses suggested that the self-injurious behavior (SIB) of a 10-year-old girl with severe mental retardation was maintained by attention. Additional analyses identified physical contact as the type of attention maintaining SIB; therefore, we hypothesized that physical proximity of an adult was a discriminative stimulus for SIB. Based on these findings, we systematically varied the distance between the participant and a therapist to assess stimulus generalization. Results showed that rates of SIB varied relative to the distance between the participant and therapis

The behavioral treatment of auditory hallucinatory responding of a schizophrenic patient.

This study assessed the efficacy of a behaviorally based treatment package to decrease the frequency of verbal responding to auditory hallucinations and to increase attention to important external stimuli, rather than to the hallucinations. The subject, a 49-year-old male, with a 20-year history of auditory hallucinatory responding (AHR), laughing and talking to himself, was seen in an outpatient clinic. Observations were made during management skill training, given usually twice a week. Observation sessions were divided into 15-minute intervals. The intervention package included reinforcement

The association of individual, interpersonal and social support factors with willingness to vaccinate against COVID-19 in rural South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Trust in vaccines and those who deliver them is often shaped by personal social networks, yet empirical data on these dynamics remain limited in low-and middle-income settings. Social networks shape exposure to information, norms, and reinforcement processes that influence vaccine decision-making. We examined how rural South Africans' social network composition and content influence their willingness to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. METHODS: We analysed 2022-23 data from the Sixhumene social network study conducted primarily among young adults in three rural KwaZulu-Natal communitie

Knowledge, attitudes, and perception of the role of the media regarding COVID-19 in medical students from a peruvian university.

A cross-sectional study was carried out on medical students from a private Peruvian university. The aim was to describe knowledge and attitudes towards COVID-19 as well as the student's perception of the role of media outlets and social media. Of the students, 32% did not know that during the first five days of illness, serological tests are preferred for diagnosing COVID-19 over molecular tests; 73% reported being willing to work as a volunteer during the pandemic, and 94% received false information regarding COVID-19 on social media. This study demonstrated that information regarding diagnos

Biophysical and Perceived Multifunctionality in an Agricultural-Wetland System: Hotspots, Similarities and Risk Perceptions.

CONTEXT: Enhancing our understanding of multifunctionality in human-shaped landscapes, such as agricultural-wetland systems, requires an interdisciplinary approach that integrates both natural biophysical data with social dimensions. OBJECTIVES: This study presents an interdisciplinary and spatially explicit approach that combines stakeholder-based mapping, biophysical indicators, and risk perception analysis to assess landscape multifunctionality. METHODS: The applied framework evaluates both perceived and biophysical ecosystem services (ESs) to 32 municipalities surrounding the Villafáfila

The pharmacologic and expectancy effects of alcohol on social anxiety in individuals with social phobia.

Individuals with social phobia are at an increased risk for alcohol problems. Individuals with social phobia could increase their risk for pathological alcohol use if they drink as a means of coping with anxiety-provoking social situations. Providing a circumscribed test of this view, we evaluate the effect of alcohol on the intensity of social phobia anxiety responses. Sixty-one individuals with social phobia gave two speech challenges in front of a group ('social anxiety challenge'), one occurring before and one after they consumed either: (a) an alcoholic drink they were told contained alco

Self-help cognitive-behavioral therapy with minimal therapist contact for social phobia: a controlled trial.

Due to treatment accessibility and cost issues, interest in self-help programs (e.g., bibliotherapy, telehealth) for common psychological disorders is growing. Research supporting the efficacy of such a program for social anxiety, however, is limited. The present study examined the efficacy of an 8-week self-directed cognitive behavioral treatment with minimal therapist involvement for social phobia based on a widely available self-help book. Twenty-one adults with social phobia initially received either treatment (i.e. assigned readings in the workbook with limited therapist contact) or were
