6-day intensive treatment protocol for refractory chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome using myofascial release and paradoxical relaxation training.

PURPOSE: Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome continues to elude conventional therapy. Evidence supports the concept that phenotypes of pelvic muscular tenderness and psychosocial distress respond to myofascial trigger point release and specific relaxation training. This case series reports long-term outcomes of a 6-day intensive combination of such therapies in refractory cases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 200 men with pain for a median of 4.8 years referred themselves to Stanford University Urology for participation in an established protocol. Daily 3 to 5-hour sessions in

A survey of cancer patients' interest in undertaking exercise to promote relaxation during radiotherapy for breast cancer and metastatic cancer.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 25-50% of patients undergoing radiotherapy (RT) experience psychological distress and anxiety, which can detrimentally affect both their quality of life and treatment outcomes. While previous research has demonstrated that relaxation exercises can enhance the tolerability of RT and alleviate associated stress and anxiety, the specific needs for such therapies in radiation oncology remain under-explored. This study aims to investigate the demand for and preferences toward relaxation exercises among radiotherapy patients, addressing a critical gap in patient-centered ca

Pharmacological behavioural treatment for children and adolescents with tension-type headache: preliminary data.

Recurrent headaches are a significant health problem for young patients. Most current investigations have employed limited modalities (eithe … provement is significant for both groups. Although the clinical results are similar in both groups, relaxation therapy seems to be more accepted than pharmacological therapy. These data, however, are preliminary and the sample sizes are small, so these conclusions are tentative. We will continue our data collection for 12 months.

Behavioral interventions and stress management training for hospitalized adolescents and young adults with cystic fibrosis.

Recent studies have demonstrated that the majority of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients are not at high risk for developing psychological problems. Clinical studies emphasizing the development of adaptive coping mechanisms in these patients have been suggested as a more appropriate line of research. The purpose of the present paper is to describe our experience in teaching various behavioral and stress management strategies to help CF patients. Behavioral counseling, relaxation training, and biofeedback have all been used with these patients to help them manage a number of problems more effectivel

Effects of external qi-therapy on emotions, electroencephalograms, and plasma cortisol.

The authors investigated the effect of external Qi-therapy (EQT) on changes in encephalograms (EEGs) and circulating cortisol concentrations. Ten college students participated in crossover sessions, receiving EQT or placebo treatment with their eyes open. Subjects reported improved emotions of satisfaction, relaxation, and calmness during EQT as compared to levels reported during placebo treatments. There were significant differences in the proportions of alpha and beta EEG waves between the two sessions, and the relative strengths of alpha waves were higher during EQT than during control sess

Application of psychoimmunotherapy in patients with alopecia universalis.

Mental stress and immunological abnormality have recently been listed as causes of alopecia universalis. This disease is difficult to treat with only ordinary pharmacotherapy. Thus, from the standpoint of psychoneuroimmunology, stress was relieved by relaxation and image therapy, and administration of small doses of a strong immunosuppressant was effective, leading to clinically favorable results. In addition, changes were recognized in the subpopulation of peripheral lymphocytes and in beta-endorphin before and after relaxation and image therapy. The treatment of alopecia universalis favorabl

[Diagnostic and therapy of tension-type headache].

Episodic headache of the tension type is the most prevalent primary headache with a lifetime prevalence of about 78 %. Clinical characteristics are a dull, moderate, holocephalic headache without accompanying autonomic or vegetative symptoms. The episodic tension-type headache often lasts only 30 min up to a maximum of a few days. In contrast to this clinically often undemanding headache, chronic tension-type headache can cause considerable disability in patients. The 1-year prevalence is 1-3 % of the population. All therapy strategies combine nonpharmaceutical therapy such as education of the

[Nightmares in the bedroom of science: mapping of a neglected sleep disorder].

Nightmares are intense and unpleasant dream experiences that characterize approximately 4 percent of the adult population at least on a weekly basis. Nightmare frequency is often co-morbid with other mental complaints; however, recent results indicate that nightmare disorder is independent from waking mental dysfunctions. Nightmare disorder is intimately related to poor subjective sleep quality, and according to polysomnographic studies nightmare subjects' sleep is characterized by increased sleep fragmentation and hyper-arousal. These findings suggest that instead of the psychopathological pe

An evaluation of behavioral treatments for Tourette syndrome.

The present study evaluated the effectiveness of self-monitoring, relaxation training and habit reversal in the treatment of 6 Tourette Syndrome (TS) subjects with multiple motor and vocal tics. A counterbalanced design was employed and tic frequencies were measured in the clinic setting using videotapes taken through a one-way mirror. Tics were reduced by an average of 55% with habit reversal, 44% with self-monitoring, and 32% with relaxation training and each behavioral procedure was the most effective treatment for at least one subject. All three treatment approaches may have some utility i

[Effects of recommendations and patient seminars on effectivity of outpatient treatment for headache].

BACKGROUND: Treatment of patients suffering from migraine and/or tension-type headache in primary care needs to be improved. To this purpose we tested two strategies for implementation of evidence-based recommendations for treatment of headaches: first, communication of recommendations to the primary care physicians and, second, standardized communication and discussion of these recommendations with patients in combination with exercising of progressive muscle relaxation during patient seminars. METHODS: Patients with at least 2 migraine attacks/month or 8 days of tension-type headache/month

[Current status of after-care cures in oncologic patients].

Some 40 accredited aftercare clinics are available for inpatient cancer aftercare, since 1981 also for immediately post-acute treatment courses. These clinics are used for both, the frequent physical treatment aftermath from oncological diseases in the otological or gynaecological field, and for psychic stabilization when psychosocial problems arise. Participation in autogeneous relaxation training, yoga, and/or psychotherapeutic services are found to entail improved disease coping. Concrete patient care expectancies primarily center around movement therapy, lymphatic drainage (in breast carci

The Effect of Guided Imagery and Progressive Muscle Relaxation on Sedation in Patients Undergoing Noninvasive Mechanical Ventilation.

Mental imagery and relaxation are noninvasive methods and can easily be used by the patient. Accordingly, this study aimed to detect the effect of guided mental imagery (GI) and progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) on sedation in patients undergoing noninvasive mechanical ventilation (NIV). This clinical trial study was carried out in the Shahid Modarres Hospital in 2022 and encompassed 80 patients with COVID-19 undergoing NIV, who were assigned to two intervention and control groups. The sedation survey scale was used to collect the required data. Before the intervention, the two groups comple

[Cognitive behavioral therapy for tension-type headache: a case report].

Tension-type headache has a very high socioeconomic impact, and its lifetime prevalence is reported to be between 30% and 78% in different studies. It is widely acknowledged that noninvasive management with a multidisciplinary approach should be considered for the treatment of tension-type headache. Cognitive behavioral therapy and relaxation exercises are efficient techniques. This article illustrates the application of a cognitive behavioral therapy protocol enhanced with progressive muscle stretching and relaxation exercises in the treatment of chronic tension-type headache via a case repor
