Balancing pragmatism, norms and power relations: a qualitative study among post-abortion intrauterine device users in central Uganda.

While almost half of all pregnancies in Uganda are unintended, the use of post-abortion intrauterine devices (IUDs) remains low. In this study, we explored how women in Uganda with current or recent post-abortion IUD use navigated socio-cultural factors, norms and power relations, and overcame challenges that often hinder contraceptive use in this context. Between January and August 2023, we conducted a qualitative study at four health facilities in central Uganda. The study included 24 in-depth interviews with women aged 19 years and above who had used an IUD following treatment for incomplet

Sexual and reproductive health of adolescents and young people: identification of demands and experiences based on a qualitative study in communities in five Brazilian cities.

This article analyzes the experiences and demands of young people regarding sexual and reproductive health. This is a qualitative study that used ethnographic observation, semi-structured interviews, and focus groups. It assessed 139 male and female participants aged 15 to 24 years living in five low-income Brazilian communities located in Porto Alegre, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Manaus, and Salvador. When analyzing the experiences and demands of young people regarding sexual and reproductive health, including HIV testing, despite regional specificities, the interviewees share similar perspect

Examining women's health through a psychosocial lens.

During the COPASAH Global Symposium 2019, a group of therapists and mental health practitioners tried to highlight the issue of women's mental health with two specific focuses, one being the lived experiences of persons living with mental illness and the secondary burn-out and shame faced by their caretakers. The second session explored the contours of somatisation that is often seen in the human body as a result of the impact of trauma. The participants reflected on the value of lived experiences and also discussed the challenges faced in getting representation for people living with mental i

Medical abortion in Nepal: a qualitative study on women's experiences at safe abortion services and pharmacies.

BACKGROUND: Although Nepal legalised abortion in 2002, a significant number of women continue to access unsafe abortions. An estimated 60% of all abortions performed in 2014 were unsafe, with unsafe abortion continuing to be a leading contributor to maternal mortality. Despite medical abortion access being solely permitted through government accredited safe abortion services, medical abortion pills are readily available for illegal purchase at pharmacies throughout the country. METHODS: Utilising an Assets Focused Rapid Participatory Appraisal (AFRPA) research methodology, underpinned by a he

Abortion politics and the production of knowledge.

It is common to think of scientific research and the knowledge it generates as neutral and value free. Indeed, the scientific method is designed to produce "objective" data. However, there are always values built into science, as historians of science and technology have shown over and over. The relevant question is not how to rid science of values but, instead, to ask which values and whose values belong? Currently, antiabortion values consistently determine US research policy. Abortion research is declared illegitimate in covert and overt ways, at the level of individual researchers and rese

Health care students at an Argentinean school of medicine: are they well prepared to provide quality sexual and reproductive health services?

OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study was to assess what students of the University of Buenos Aires School of Medicine learn about sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and rights, focusing particularly on their knowledge of accessibility to contraception and abortion legislation. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, self-administered, anonymous questionnaires were administered to 760 first year students and to 695 final year students from different fields of study (medicine, midwifery, nursing, radiology, nutrition, speech therapy and physiotherapy) between 2011 and 2013. Students' knowledge of

HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis for female sex workers: ensuring women's family planning needs are not left behind.

INTRODUCTION: Female sex workers (FSWs) experience overlapping burdens of HIV, sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancy. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly efficacious for HIV prevention. It represents a promising strategy to reduce HIV acquisition risks among FSWs specifically given complex social and structural factors that challenge consistent condom use. However, the potential impact on unintended pregnancy has garnered little attention. We discuss the potential concerns and opportunities for PrEP to positively or negatively impact the sexual and reproductive health

A human rights assessment of menopausal women's access to age- and gender-sensitive nondiscriminatory health care in prison.

IMPORTANCE AND OBJECTIVE: Women represent about 6% of the global prison population of 11 million. The female prison population has increased significantly in the past decade. Where attention is devoted to women's unique sexual and reproductive health needs in prison, this is largely focused on menstruation management and ante/postnatal care. There is no explicit guidance regarding imprisoned menopausal women's health care in the United Nations normative standards of detention (Mandela Rules, Bangkok Rules). A human rights assessment of menopausal women's access to age- and gender-sensitive non

A surrogate's secrets are(n't) safe with me: patient confidentiality in the care of a gestational surrogate.

Gestational surrogacy relies on a legal agreement between the surrogate and the intended parents to define the roles and responsibilities of the parties, including explicit consent by the surrogate to allow the physician to release all pregnancy-related medical information to the intended parents. In the event of surrogate misconduct, however, physicians may feel conflicted if the surrogate asks the physician to withhold information about potentially dangerous behaviour in pregnancy from the intended parents. While the American Society for Reproductive Medicine guidelines may support disclosur

Maternal indicators to monitor hospitals in the Rede Cegonha: a proposal.

The Rede Cegonha strategy was launched in 2011 by the federal government to improve pregnancy, delivery, postpartum care, and child development in the first two years of life, reduce maternal and child mortality, and expand women's sexual and reproductive rights. We propose seven new maternal indicators to improve obstetric care evaluation in the next assessment cycle. The new indicators are the use of Robson's classification to monitor cesarean rates, use of magnesium sulfate in cases of preeclampsia/eclampsia, pregnant women's use of calcium supplements, blood transfusions and hysterectomy i…

Surrogacy Wars: Notes for a Radical Theory of the Politics of Reproduction.

State regulation of reproductive practices secure the heterosexual infrastructure of kinship through means that include elitization, institutional hostility, and plain criminalization. This article draws on personal experiences of gay fathers through transnational gestational surrogacy in Spain to show the extent to which that is the case even in those contexts where some gay and lesbian kinship rights are available. Public and academic debates on the possible regulation of gestational surrogacy will be analyzed through the lens of Gayle Rubin's intervention in the sex wars that divided femini

Spiritual determinants of abortion stigma: the role of socio-cultural and demographic variables in women's attitudes toward voluntary abortion.

Abortion must be evaluated not only in medical terms, but also in terms of its socio-cultural, religious, and psychological dimensions. This study aims to examine women's attitudes toward voluntary abortion in Turkey, their stigmatizing attitudes, and the relationship between these attitudes and their spiritual well-being. A descriptive study design was used. Study data were collected between September 2024 and April 2025 at a hospital in eastern Turkey. The study was completed with 1,240 women. Data collection tools included a Personal Information Form, the Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS),

Integration of prevention and control measures for female genital schistosomiasis, HIV and cervical cancer.

Female genital schistosomiasis as a result of chronic infection with Schistosoma haematobium (commonly known as bilharzia) continues to be largely ignored by national and global health policy-makers. International attention for large-scale action against the disease focuses on whether it is a risk factor for the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Yet female genital schistosomiasis itself is linked to pain, bleeding and sub- or infertility, leading to social stigma, and is a common issue for women in schistosomiasis-endemic areas in sub-Saharan Africa. The disease should theref

Female reproductive tract anatomy of the endangered Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx) in Jordan.

Female reproductive anatomy of the Arabian oryx is unknown. In this study, reproductive tracts of seven female Arabian oryx (aged 2 to 7 years) were examined to characterize their reproductive anatomy. Observations and measurements were obtained in situ from dead animals during necropsy. Animals were allocated into two groups: cycling (n = 3; follicles or corpora lutea present) and not-cycling (n = 4; follicles or corpora lutea absent). Different reproductive tract segments for each animal in both groups were measured using a digital caliper. The mean, SD and range for each reproductive tract

Gender inequality and utilization of ART: an international cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis.

STUDY QUESTION: What is the association between a country's level of gender equality and access to ART, as measured through ART utilization? SUMMARY ANSWER: ART utilization is associated with a country's level of gender equality even after controlling for the level of development. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Although gender equality is recognized as an important determinant of population health, its association with fertility care, a highly gendered condition, has not been explored. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: A longitudinal cross-national analysis of ART utilization in 69 countries during 200

Violence against women and unintended pregnancies in Nicaragua: a population-based multilevel study.

BACKGROUND: Despite an increased use of contraceptive methods by women, unintended pregnancies represent one of the most evident violations of women's sexual and reproductive rights around the world. This study aims to measure the association between individual and community exposure to different forms of violence against women (physical/sexual violence by the partner, sexual abuse by any person, or controlling behavior by the partner) and unintended pregnancies. METHODS: Data from the 2006/2007 Nicaraguan Demographic and Health Survey were used. For the current study, 5347 women who reported…

Adolescents with Special Needs: Clinical Challenges in Reproductive Health Care.

Adolescents with special needs have unique reproductive health care needs related to their physical and cognitive issues. This review discusses some of the most common concerns that are encountered in clinical practice, as the clinician will partner with the adolescent and her family to guide her through the pubertal transition and to help navigate the risks and rights of reproduction. Families often seek anticipatory guidance before menarche on menstrual hygiene, abuse risk and sexuality and can be reassured that most teens with special needs do very well with menstruation. The clinician need
