Vancomycin Re-Exposure-Induced Immune Hemolytic Anemia.

Vancomycin-induced immune hemolytic anemia is a rare but potentially life-threatening adverse drug reaction that is often underrecognized. We report a case of a 76-year-old male who developed an infection following hip arthroplasty and received vancomycin for the first time in September 2025, resulting in a decrease in hemoglobin from 14.1 g/dL to 10.4 g/dL with normal platelet counts. After readministration in March 2026, hemoglobin decreased by 8.2 g/dL, reticulocyte count rose to 7.00%, and the direct antiglobulin test was positive, confirming drug-induced immune hemolytic anemia (DIIHA). H…

Essential thrombocythemia in a cat.

The diagnosis of essential thrombocythemia in a cat was made by fulfilling the five applicable criteria set forth by the Polycythemia Vera Study Group for use in humans. The criteria were 1) a platelet count persistently above 600,000/microL, 2) a normal initial hematocrit that did not rise in response to iron therapy, 3) normal serum iron concentration, 4) absence of collagen fibrosis of the bone marrow, and 5) no cause for reactive thrombocytosis. In addition, normal thrombopoietin concentrations and splenic hypofunction were demonstrated. Melphalan was not effective in decreasing the platel

Effects of oxygen inhalation on endogenous erythropoietin kinetics, erythropoiesis, and properties of blood cells in sickle-cell anemia.

The role of oxygen therapy in sickle-cell anemia is not established, and its effects on erythropoiesis and on the rheologic properties of sickled erythrocytes are controversial. When three patients with sickle-cell anemia who were not in crisis or infected breathed oxygen at a rate of 5 liters per minute continuously through nasal prongs for five days, there was a rapid decline in erythropoietin levels that had initially been elevated, a delayed fall in the number of reticulocytes, and a fall in the number of irreversibly sickled cells, which, in two of the subjects, preceded the suppression o

Characterisation of erythrocyte binding activity of Plasmodium cynomolgi duffy binding protein haplotypes from Macaca fascicularis in Peninsular Malaysia.

Human infections with the zoonotic Plasmodium cynomolgi are rising across Southeast Asia. This parasite employs two Duffy binding proteins (DBPs), PcDBP1(II) and PcDBP2(II), which interact with the Duffy antigen receptor chemokine (DARC) for erythrocyte invasion. Previous studies on P. cynomolgi DBPs have reported two distinct haplotype groups (groups 1 and 2) in Peninsular Malaysia. In this study, the differential erythrocyte binding activity of PcDBP1(II) and PcDBP2(II) haplotypes was investigated. Four isolates were selected for each DBP: group 1 consisted of a recent field isolate and the

Initial assessment of the beneficial effect of partial splenectomy in hereditary spherocytosis.

Clinical manifestations of hereditary spherocytosis (HS), the most common red blood cell (RBC) membrane disorder, can be abrogated or marked … f the 11 individuals. Following partial splenectomy, hemoglobin increased on the average by 3 g/dL, reticulocyte count decreased by 300 x 10(6)/L, and RBC life span was substantially prolonged. Normal technetium uptake was noted in the splenic remnant and the percentage of pitted RBCs was in the normal range. Partial splenectomy is effective in decreasing the hemoly …

Changes in Blood Profile from Steady State in Patients with Sickle Cell Anemia Admitted for Vaso-occlusive Crisis and Acute Chest Syndrome.

Close to half of all patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) will have at least one episode of acute chest syndrome (ACS) during their lifetime. Multiple cells and molecules involved with the inflammatory cascade play a role in the development of ACS. We found that patients with SCD who developed ACS as a complication of a vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC) had a significant increase in leukocytes and decrease in platelets from their steady state when compared with a separate admission for VOC without ACS development. No significant change from steady state hemoglobin or reticulocyte count was noted …

A study on intestinal helminths causing human anaemia in Cairo.

Haematological and biochemical studies were done for 50 urban and rural Egyptians, from Cairo, suffering from Ancylostoma duodenale, Ascaris lumbricoides, Enterobius vermicularis, Hymenolepis nana, Schistoosma mansoni and Taenia saginata. Anaemia of varying degrees was noticed in all cases. The lowest Hb% and hematocrit value and highest eosinophilia were found in cases of ancylostomiasis with severe hypochromia compared with the other parasitic infections. Total blood protein was normal in all cases, except in 2 cases of S. mansoni, it was higher. Blood cholesterol and blood urea showed no de

Effect of dietary zinc intake on the hematological profile of the rat.

The effect of dietary zinc deficiency (imposed at weaning) on the hematological profile of the male rat was studied. Lack of dietary zinc resulted in elevated numbers of erythrocytes and segmented neutrophils and decreased reticulocyte number. The hematocrit of zinc-deficient rats was significantly elevated after the first week. The mean lifespan of erythrocytes from zinc-deficient rats (tested in adult control rats) was not significantly altered from that of controls. The lack of dietary zinc did not cause a major change in the erythrocyte density (age) distribution.

Oscillatory haematopoiesis in adults with sickle cell disease treated with hydroxycarbamide.

Hydroxycarbamide therapy has been associated with significant oscillations in peripheral blood counts from myeloid, lymphoid and erythroid lineages in patients with polycythaemia vera and chronic myeloid leukaemia. We retrospectively evaluated serial blood counts over an 8-year period from 44 adult patients with sickle cell disease receiving hydroxycarbamide. Platelet counts, leucocyte counts, haemoglobin values and reticulocyte counts, apportioned by hydroxycarbamide status, were analysed using a Lomb-Scargle periodogram algorithm. Significant periodicities were present in one or more counts …

Successful desensitization to horse antithymocyte globulin for aplastic anemia: two case reports and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Horse antithymocyte globulin (hATG) is an important therapeutic option for aplastic anemia (AA). However, hATG carries the risk of fatal anaphylaxis, and skin tests are performed to identify high-risk patients. We report on the successful desensitization of two AA patients with positive skin tests to hATG. CASE PRESENTATION: Case 1: A 72-year-old man with a history of successful treatment with rabbit ATG was referred for pancytopenia. Neutrophil, reticulocyte, and platelet counts were 546 /µL, 32,000 /µL, and 19,000 /µL, despite the oral administration of eltrombopag and cyclospor

Multiple organ toxicity, including hypochromic anemia, following repeated dose oral administration of phenobarbital (PB) in rats.

A 4-week repeated dose oral toxicity study of phenobarbital (PB) sodium was conducted in F344 rats of both sexes at PB doses of 0.8, 8, and 80 mg/kg/day to fully elucidate its general toxicity including hematological changes. Both sexes in the 80 mg/kg/day group showed staggering gait, lacrimation, and/or sedation, which were more evident in the early stage of treatment. The body weight gain and food consumption were greater in these animals than in controls. Hematology revealed a significant reduction in the hematocrit (Ht), hemoglobin concentration (Hb), and erythrocyte count (RBC) in both s
