The clinical and pathologic features of an unusual retinal glioma that was the only clinically overt manifestation of tuberous sclerosis in a 27-year-old woman are reported. The tumor was composed predominantly of large pleomorphic cells with glassy eosinophilic cytoplasm. They were divided into two groups according to their last dose of levodopa therapy. Examination of two sisters ages 2 years 10 months and 6 years four months with gyrate atrophy of the choroid and retina provided an opportunity for detailed clinical investigation. Although the chorioretinal lesions were confined to the peripheral retina in the older case and were quite minimal in the younger case, there was electroretinographic evidence of marked involvement of the cone and rod systems. These cases offer an opportunity to assess an arginine restricted diet in preventing the progress of the disease.

Gyrate atrophy of the choroid and retina is caused by deficient activity of ornithine ketoacid aminotransferase, a pyridoxal phosphate dependent enzyme. Besides the typical eye findings, abnormalities have been found on muscle biopsy, electro-encephalography, electromyography and electrocardiography, establishing this as a generalized disorder. Frequency of pigmentary degeneration of the retina (PDR) among patients with degenerative and heredodegenerative neurological diseases (HDNDs) was estimated based on the hospital statistics. PDR was detected in 3% of 176 inpatients with HDNDs by careful ophthalmologic examination. The present study describes a model of multifocal septic choroiditis with serous retinal detachment after intracarotid injection of Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus faecalis. The fundus lesions occurred mainly in the tapetal area and, on ophthalmoscopic examination, were more extensive after S. aureus than after S. faecalis injection. On histopathologic examination there were microabscesses in the inner choroid and subretinal space, disrupting the outer retina but sparing the inner retina.

A nonfamilial case of agiomatosis retinae (retinal hemangioblastoma) was studied by electron microscopy.
