Family ties and functional limitation in the elderly: Results from the Survey of Health Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE).

OBJECTIVES: To examine if family ties are strong predictors of functional limitation in older adults in Europe. METHODS: Cross sectional data were used and included 14 European countries from the second wave (w2) of the survey on Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe. 13,974 adults aged 50+ (45.2% males and 54.8%females) were included in the study. Functional limitation was assessed using activities of daily living (ADL), instrumental activities of daily living (i-ADL) and mobility sensory index. Family ties were based on a customized model of family structural aspects. Multiple logistic r…

Sleep-apnea risk and subclinical atherosclerosis in early-middle-aged retired National Football League players.

PURPOSE: Limited data from former National Football League (NFL) players suggest that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) may be highly prevalent after retirement. It remains unclear whether the high prevalence of OSA in retired players is comparable to nonathletes. This retrospective analysis compared sleep apnea (SA) risk in retired NFL players to a community cohort (CARDIA Sleep study), and examined associations between SA risk and cardiovascular risk factors, including subclinical atherosclerosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retired NFL players (n=122) were matched to CARDIA Sleep participants by ag…

Plasma N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide concentration in healthy retired racing Greyhounds.

BACKGROUND: N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is a cardiac biomarker whose plasma concentration is high in some dogs with cardiopulmonary disease. NT-proBNP is a diagnostic tool that can be used to help determine if a patient has congestive heart failure. Greyhounds have functional heart murmurs, relative cardiomegaly, and high serum cTnI concentration. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the plasma concentration of NT-proBNP in healthy Greyhounds and compare it to non-Greyhound dogs. METHODS: We prospectively evaluated healthy client-owned dogs including

Hypopituitarism due to sports related head trauma and the effects of growth hormone replacement in retired amateur boxers.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been recently recognized as a leading cause of pituitary dysfunction. Current data clearly demonstrated that sports related head trauma due to boxing, kickboxing, and soccer might results in pituitary hormone deficiencies, isolated growth hormone (GH) deficiency in particular. In the present report physiologic dose GH replacement therapy (GHRT) was performed in two GH deficient retired amateur boxers for the first time. The boxers received recombinant GH for 6 months. After 6 months of GHRT there were substantial improvements, but not complete normalization, in

[Conception and evaluation of a group therapy intervention for patients with chronic pain disorders and applications for early retirement pensions].

OBJECTIVE: Patients with chronic pain disorder are generally thought to be difficult to treat in psychosomatic rehabilitation. On average, their disorders tend to take a more chronic course than those of other patients, and they develop a higher rate of additional socio-medical problems, all of which increase the probability of therapy failure. Most of the time, such failures are attributed solely to the desire for early retirement and disability pensions, that is, a characteristic of the patient. However, a lack of specific therapeutic offers for patients with predominant psycho-social proble…

[Association among general health, diet and need of dental care among retired pensioners living at home].

A pilot project was established in a Danish municipality with the aim of improving the nutrition of 67-85-year-olds living at home but who were dependent on domestic aid for purchasing or preparing their food. The project comprised health education and information concerning dietary habits as well as an offer of dental treatment to those who were physically or mentally handicapped. At initiation of the project, the persons (n = 110; 89% of the target population) were interviewed about their general and dental health, ailments, drug consumption, and diet. Furthermore, a clinical dental examinat

How much income is enough? Measuring the income adequacy of retired persons using a survey based approach.

This paper uses survey data and a new method proposed by Dutch social scientists to estimate minimum income amounts and income equivalence scales for retired individuals and couples. The method is based on responses to survey questions about the amount of family income needed to achieve various levels of living. The minimum income amounts for retired families obtained using this method do not differ much from comparable official measures of income adequacy. The equivalence scales obtained using this method, however, do differ from official scales and indicate a need to target greater resources

Smoking cessation, weight change, and incidence and progression of frailty: A longitudinal analysis of the US Health and Retirement Study.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking cessation is important for healthy ageing, but accompanying weight change may influence subsequent functional vulnerability. We examined whether attained cessation duration and weight change across the observed cessation interval distinguished later frailty risk and frailty-index progression. METHODS: This longitudinal secondary analysis included 27020 Health and Retirement Study participants with self-reported smoking and body-weight data, and valid consecutive frailty assessments who were non-frail at risk-set entry during 1998-2020. Smoking status, body weight, and co…

AI-Driven Automated Detection of Pleural Plaques on Chest CT Scans in Retired Asbestos-Exposed Workers.

Background/Objective: This study aimed to develop and validate an automated framework for detecting pleural plaques (PPs) at the patient level using a single chest CT scan. Methods: A database of chest CT scans with corresponding individual binary annotations for PP presence was first established through expert visual assessment, based on consensus among a board of specialized radiologists. This dataset served to train and validate a patient-level classification framework for automated PP presence detection. This framework leverages a pre-trained PP segmentation network, thus obviating the nee

Psychiatric or psychological treatment of depression in older adults and subsequent risk of dementia: Health and Retirement Study2012-2020.

Depression is an established risk factor for dementia. However, it is unclear whether initiating psychiatric/psychological treatment of depression, particularly early initiation of such treatment, may reduce risk of dementia. We examined associations between initiation and immediate initiation of psychiatric/psychological treatment and subsequent risk of dementia in older adults. Participants aged ≥60 years from the Health and Retirement Study from 2012 to 2018 with self-reported newly diagnosed depression but no history of dementia were included and followed up through 2020. Two sets of analy…

Preliminary Evidence of Higher Production of LPS-induced Proinflammatory Cytokines in Retired Versus Employed Dementia Caregivers.

OBJECTIVE: Nearly half of all informal (unpaid) family caregivers for patients with Alzheimer disease or related dementias (ADRD) are employed. We test competing hypotheses on the role of employment for ADRD spousal caregivers, as some evidence suggests that stress from work and caregiving will have an additive effect. Other evidence suggests that psychological resources generated at work may buffer stress at home. Psychological stress is associated with immune dysregulation; we examined the role of employment status on proinflammatory cytokine production. METHODS: We tested competing hypothe

Association of disability with COVID-19 outcomes in older adults: a prospective analysis of the US health and retirement study.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately impacted the ageing population and persons with disability. Previous studies have used cross-sectional or descriptive designs, limiting the establishment of robust associations. Our objective was to examine prospective associations between functional disability and COVID-19 outcomes in ageing US adults. METHODS: This study included 9390 Health and Retirement Study participants from the 2018 wave, representing 64 044 633 adults aged 50 years or older, who completed the 2021 Pandemic Mail-in Survey. Baseline functional disability comprised …

Association of social participation and patterns with depression: analysis of data from the China health and retirement longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Considering the significance of self-reported social participation in the context of depression, patterns of social engagement may influence the onset and progression of depressive disorders. This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between social behaviors and depressive symptoms. METHODS: Utilizing data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) over a nine-year span, we enrolled 9415 participants without depression in 2011 and monitored them for depressive symptoms until 2020. Baseline data included ten items related to social activities. We investig…

Is retirement a pain in the back? A 23-year population-based study on the impact of age and employment on spinal injections.

PurposeSpine-related pain disorders commonly require interventions such as spinal injections, which are often image-guided and increase in demand as populations age. This study investigates the impact of lifestyle changes following retirement on the incidence of these procedures, hypothesizing that retirement significantly influences the requirement for such treatments.MethodsA review of medical records from XXX County between 2000 and 2023 was conducted, focusing on patients who received spinal injections, including epidural steroid, facet, and sacroiliac joint injections. Data were stratifie…
