Persistence with treatment for Wilson disease: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Wilson disease (WD) is genetically induced failure of copper metabolism which can be successfully treated with pharmacological agents. The prognosis for survival in most WD patients is favorable if diagnosis and anti-copper treatment are provided early. Many observations imply that persistence with drug treatment is generally low in patients with chronic diseases, which impact the treatment effectiveness, but such results are very limited in WD. The aim of our study was to assess persistence with treatment among WD patients, to analyze its effect on patient outcome and to identify

Immunity to rubella: an Italian retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: International guidelines recommend that healthcare workers (HCWs) have presumptive evidence of immunity to rubella and that susceptible HCWs and doubt cases receive two doses of the MMR vaccine. However, a small percentage of the fully immunized will remain unprotected against wild viruses. Moreover, protective levels of antibodies induced by the vaccine have been shown to decline over time, but a formal recommendation regarding the testing of immunized HCWs for the persistence of IgG against rubella is lacking. METHODS: The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term immunoge

Outcome of Idiopathic Membranous Nephropathy: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN) is one of the most common causes of nephrotic syndrome (NS) in Caucasian adults. Most patients have good renal prognosis, but 30-40% may progress to end stage renal disease (ESRD). OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of immunosuppressive treatment (IST) in high-risk patients. METHODS: All IMN patients diagnosed by kidney biopsy from 2004-2010 were included. Clinical and laboratory data were collected at each follow-up visit. Risk assessment for renal progression classified patients as high risk if: 24 hour protein excretion > 6

Constrictive pericarditis: retrospective study of 109 patients.

Background Chronic constrictive pericarditis is the most common diastolic disorder of the heart. Non-elasticity of the pericardium with impaired cardiac diastolic function is constriction. Chronic constrictive pericarditis is the result of scarring and fibrosis in mid and late diastole. The clinical presentation is similar to that of right heart failure. Historically, the etiology is helpful but not diagnostic. Echocardiography and a hemodynamic study are the main diagnostic tools. A thick pericardium of more than 4 mm is not necessarily constrictive, but thickness ≥7 mm is highly specific for

METHODOLOGY: The aim of this study was to update epidemiological data on cattle CE in Italy. Data on CE positivity of 5,336 cattle were acquired from abattoir registers between January 2009 and July 2010. Morphobiological characterization of hydatids was performed by direct examination of liver and lungs of 1,664 animals butchered in the same slaughterhouses in 2010. Strain typing of parasites was carr

Mortality in patients with psoriasis. A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The immune and inflammatory pathways involved in psoriasis could favor the development of atherosclerosis, consequently increasing mortality. The objectives of this study were: 1) to assess the mortality of a population with psoriasis compared to a control group, and 2) to assess the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors. PATIENTS AND METHOD: A retrospective cohort was analyzed from a secondary database (electronic medical record). All patients with a diagnosis of psoriasis at 1-01-2010 were included in the study and compared to a control group of the same healt

Blisters in Ankle Fractures: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

The most frequent postoperative complications after an ankle fracture are usually skin related. We present the results of a retrospective study of 112 patients with ankle fracture who had undergone open reduction and internal fixation from January 2014 to December 2014. The following features were analyzed: patient comorbidities, fracture type, the presence of an open fracture or fracture-dislocation, timing and duration of surgery, preoperative glucose level, and short-term complications (i.e., blisters, wound dehiscence, deep and superficial infections, and reintervention). The mean age of t

Thromboembolism following cesarean section: a retrospective study.

OBJECTIVES: As thromboembolism (TE) continues to be one of the principal causes of death in obstetrical patients and as the postpartum period is associated with the highest risk for TE, we sought to determine the risk factors associated with TE following cesarean section (CS). METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patients who had CS at a large tertiary referral center was conducted. Patients were identified through hospital medical records and were contacted approximately 1 year following their CS. Medical records and a questionnaire were used to identify features that were potentially associ

Denosumab-related osteonecrosis of the jaw: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Osteonecrosis of the jaw is a very delicate side effect of Denosumab. The aim of this retrospective study was to assess the occurrence rate of Denosumab-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (DRONJ) at the Cancer Institute of Lorraine (ICL) and to highlight necrosis risk factors. METHODS: To that purpose, we analyzed the medical records of 249 consecutive patients treated with Denosumab at the ICL during the past 5 years. Patients who received orofacial radiotherapy or a previous treatment with a bisphosphonate were excluded. The P-value was set at .005. RESULTS: A total of 141 patien

Retrospective study on cattle and poultry diseases in Uganda.

Cattle and poultry enterprises are among the major contributors to food security and socioeconomic empowerment of households in Uganda. However, various diseases constrain their productivity. A two-year retrospective study between April 2012 and March 2014 was conducted using records for cattle and poultry diseases diagnosed at the Central Diagnostic Laboratory (CDL) to determine prevalent diseases in Uganda. The laboratory received 836 samples from poultry (36.3%) and cattle (63.7%). Of the 836 samples, 47.5% had a definitive diagnosis of disease causation. Most of the cattle and poultry dise
