Gomez-Lopez-Hernandez syndrome (GLHS) is a rare neurocutaneous disorder. We are aware of thirty previously reported cases. We present four additional patients with this condition. Previously reported patients have shown the hallmark triad of rhombocephalosynapsis, trigeminal anesthesia, and bilateral parietal or parieto-occipital alopecia. Rhombencephalosynapsis consists of agenesis of the cerebellar vermis, fusion of the cerebellar hemispheres, and the dentate nuclei. The gene or genes responsible for GLHS remain unknown. Alopecia is seen in all previously reported cases of GLHS. Additional c

Here we originally describe the clinical scenario of a young immune-competent patient affected by acute rhomboencephalitis with severe parenchymal edema and acute hydrocephalus who developed sudden life-threatening cardiac derangement. Hemodynamic and perfusion parameters revealed cardiogenic shock, so intensive circulatory support with epinephrine infusion and intra-aortic balloon pump was needed to restore organ perfusion. Transesophageal echocardiographic examination showed severe left ventricular dysfunction (ejection fraction as low as 20%) with wall motion abnormalities resembling a patt

Recent advances in neuroimaging techniques turned possible for neuroradiologists to be frequently the first one to detect possible brain structural anomalies. However, with all the recent advances in genetics and embryology, understanding posterior fossa malformation's principles is being hardest to be achieved than previously. Studies in vertebrate models provide a developmental framework in which to categorize human hindbrain malformations and serve to inform our thinking regarding candidate genes involved in disrupted developmental processes. The main focus of this review was to survey the

We present diffusion-weighted imaging findings of a case of rhombencephalitis due to Listeria monocytogenes. It is a rare, life-threatening disorder. The diagnosis is difficult by clinical findings only. In this report, we aim to draw attention to the role of conventional and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging findings. To our knowledge, this is the first case report in the literature with apparent diffusion coefficient values of diseased brain parenchyma.

Injection of noradrenaline (NA) into the lateral cerebral ventricle (i.c.v.) was reported to cause blood pressure increase in unanesthetized rats, blocked by i.v. injection of vasopressin antagonists. We report similar responses to NA injection into the III or IV ventricles, suggesting multiple sites of action for i.c.v. NA. These responses were blocked by i.v. pretreatment with vasopressin antagonist, suggesting a common mediation by vasopressin release into circulation. Selected ventricular spaces were occluded with Nivea cream plugs to identify ventricular areas responding to i.c.v. NA. III

It is speculated that specific hindbrain transmitter pathways centred on the periaqueductal gray and locus coeruleus are an important integrative neural substrate for the expression of anxiety and the somatic symptoms and cardiovascular changes that accompany severe anxiety states, such as in panic disorder. Here we investigated the effects of various drugs, known to induce panic in humans and to be anxiogenic in animals, on Fos expression in the periaqueductal gray, locus coeruleus and other parts of the rat hindbrain. The drugs tested were the benozodiazepine inverse agonist FG-7142, the alp

The topographical relationship between the swim bladder, the inner ear, and the otic lateral line was studied in the bottom dwelling catfish, Ancistrus sp. In addition, afferent and efferent subcomponents of the eighth and lateral line nerves were labelled with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) or with differently fluorescing dextran amines. The swim bladder of Ancistrus consists of two separate, transversely oriented parts of each of which is connected to the sinus impar of the inner ears via two Weberian ossicles and the perilymphatic sac. The osseous capsula of the ear has two foramina other tha

The nonapeptides arginine-vasotocin (AVT) and isotocin (IT), which are the teleost homologues of arginine-vasopressin and oxytocin in mammals, have well established peripheral effects on osmoregulation and stress response, and central effects on social behavior. However, all studies that have looked so far into the relationship between these nonapeptides and social behavior have used indirect measures of AVT/IT activity (i.e. immunohistochemistry of AVT/IT immunoreactive neurons, or AVT/IT or their receptors mRNA expression with in situ hybridization or qPCR) and therefore direct measures of p

During embryonic development, the inner ear develops from a placode into a richly differentiated structure with defined borders between neural and non-neural elements. In an effort to define the origin of such differentiation boundaries from the time of appearance of the placode, immunocytochemical methods have been used to map the developmental distributions of the cell adhesion molecules, N-CAM, L-CAM, and Ng-CAM, and the extracellular matrix molecules, cytotactin and fibronectin, in the cochlea of the chicken embryo. As the otic placode was induced by the underlying N-CAM-containing rhomben

The abnormal midline cyst of diencephalic origin was termed "diencephalic cyst" by Brocklehurst in 1973. Since then, several case reports of so-called "diencephalic cyst" have appeared, but its clinical picture, especially its relation to other midline dysraphisms, does not seem to be well understood. Our experience with four cases of so-called "diencephalic cyst" were reported and their relation to holoprosencephaly as well as simple agenesis of corpus callosum was discussed. (1) In all of these cases, there was an abnormal space in the midline which freely communicated with the lateral ventr

Natural environments often change gradually, making it adaptive to bias decisions on the basis of the recent past - a phenomenon known as serial dependence1-3. Large-scale recordings during behaviour have identified that serial dependence is a common motif for decision-making, with neural representations of past experiences found throughout the brain4-11. However, it remains unclear whether this bias arises from dedicated neural circuits with history-specific computations. Using whole-brain, cellular-resolution imaging in zebrafish performing memory-guided evasive manoeuvres12-14, we identifie

A key challenge in neuroscience is understanding how neurons in hundreds of interconnected brain regions integrate sensory inputs with previous expectations to initiate movements and make decisions1. It is difficult to meet this challenge if different laboratories apply different analyses to different recordings in different regions during different behaviours. Here we report a comprehensive set of recordings from 621,733 neurons recorded with 699 Neuropixels probes across 139 mice in 12 laboratories. The data were obtained from mice performing a decision-making task with sensory, motor and co

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: In fetuses with open spina bifida (fSB), reduced middle cerebral artery resistance index (MCA-RI) has been described. In theory, compression of specific neuronal pathways due to hindbrain herniation (HH) leads to an imbalance of the autonomic nervous system, favoring sympathetic pathways with increased peripheral vasoconstriction resulting in reduced MCA-RI (similar to the brain sparing effect). While untethering the neural placode, the unavoidable surgical manipulation may lead to a temporarily increased tension of the spinal cord and even aggravate HH and compres

Swallow is a primitive behavior regulated by medullary networks, responsible for movement of food/liquid from the oral cavity to the esophagus. To investigate how functionally heterogeneous networks along the medullary intermediate reticular formation (IRt) and ventral respiratory column (VRC) control swallow, we electrically stimulated the nucleus tractus solitarius to induce fictive swallow between inspiratory bursts, with concurrent optical recordings using a synthetic Ca2+ indicator in the neonatal sagittally sectioned rat hindbrain (SSRH) preparation. Simultaneous recordings from hypoglos

The choroid plexus (ChP) is a secretory tissue that produces cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) secreted into the ventricular system. It is a monolayer of secretory, multiciliated epithelial cells derived from neuroepithelial progenitors and overlying a stroma of mesenchymal cells of mesodermal origin. Zfp423, which encodes a Kruppel-type zinc-finger transcription factor essential for cerebellar development and mutated in rare cases of cerebellar vermis hypoplasia/Joubert syndrome and other ciliopathies, is expressed in the hindbrain roof plate, from which the IV ventricle ChP arises, and, later, in me

Brainstem dysgenesis designates all those patients with congenital dysfunction of cranial nerves and muscle tone due to prenatal lesions or malformations of the brainstem. This generic term has the advantage over the eponyms Moebius 'expanded' or 'unrestricted', Robin, Cogan or Carey-Fineman-Ziter syndromes in that it has a less restrictive view and provides a frame work that enables a systematic approach to diagnosis and research of most developmental disorders involving the brainstem. The review of the literature and our experience shows that infants with a predominant rombencephalic involve
