Ixodes ricinus is the dominant questing tick in forest habitats in Romania: the results from a countrywide dragging campaign.

In 2010 and 2011, questing ticks were collected from 188 forested locations in all the 41 counties of Romania using the dragging method. The total of 13,771 ticks collected belonged to eleven species: Ixodes ricinus (86.9 %), Dermacentor marginatus (9.5 %), Haemaphysalis punctata (2.6 %), H. concinna (0.6 %), H. sulcata (0.3 %), H. parva (0.1 %), Hyalomma marginatum (0.02 %), D. reticulatus (0.02 %), I. crenulatus (0.007 %), I. hexagonus (0.007 %) and I. laguri (0.007 %). Ixodes ricinus was present in 97.7 % (n = 180) of locations, occurring exclusively in 41.7 % of the locations, whereas it w…

Ixodes ricinus: the potential of two-dimensional gel electrophoresis as a tool for studying host-vector-pathogen interactions.

Ixodes ricinus is a three-host tick, with three active instars. For moulting to occur the tick has to find a host where it can take a blood meal. Throughout feeding I. ricinus can be infected or infect the host with different pathogens, e.g., Tick-Borne Encephalitis virus or Borrelia burgdorferi. The host-vector-pathogen interaction is very complex, making a detailed study difficult. Here we analyse the potential of two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE) to study the host-vector-pathogen interaction. We examined 20 nymphs, which as larvae parasitised either mouse or hen. After moulting, the…

Natural foci of tick-borne encephalitis in central Europe and the relationship of the incidence of Ixodes ricinus to original ecosystems.

Based on reports of the national epidemiological service on tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) morbidity in 1953-1987, data in the literature, and results of the author's own field research on the occurrence of the common tick, Ixodes ricinus, foci of this disease have been identified on the territory of Czechoslovakia. In Bohemia a significant focus of TBE in the Central Bohemian Region is located in the Krivoklát area with forests and in the Berounka, mid-Vltava, and lower-Sázava river basins, in the Brdy area and the Czech Karst continuing southwards via the Vltava basin to foci in the South Boh…

[Effect of the diapause in the Ixodes ricinus (Ixodidae) tick on the multiplication of the tick-borne encephalitis virus in its body].

The tick encephalitis virus was found to multiply more intensively in ticks developing without diapause. Thus, in larvae developing with diapause, in 4 and 8 weeks after they feed on infected animals, the virus titers were 3.0 and 3.5 lg LD50 respectively. At the development without diapause the titers were 4.3 and 5.3, respectively (P less than 0.05). The virus titers in infected nymphs developing without diapause were 2.5 to 3.9 lg LD50 higher than those of the diapausing individuals. In diapausing larvae and nymphs the tick encephalitis virus remained for a long time (8 to 10 weeks) without

Seasonal variation in prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and Neoehrlichia mikurensis in Ixodes ricinus nymphs in southern Norway.

BACKGROUND: Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s. l.) and Neoehrlichia mikurensis are the most prevalent pathogenic bacteria found in Ixodes ricinus in Norway. Here we evaluate the prevalence of both bacteria and the density of infected ticks, key factors to assess the human infection risk. The study was performed in one location in southern Norway. RESULTS: An overall prevalence of 12% for B. burgdorferi s. l. and 8% for N. mikurensis was found. The most prevalent B. burgdorferi s. l. genospecies was Borrelia afzelii, followed by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto and Borrelia garinii. The hig…

Diversity of Rickettsiaceae and Anaplasmataceae bacteria within and between species in Ixodes ricinus ticks collected from humans in Poland.

Ixodes ricinus is the most common tick species in Europe, widely distributed in natural environments, rural habitats, and urban green spaces. As a vector of diverse tick-borne pathogens, I. ricinus represents a significant public health concern. The aim of this study was to identify pathogenic species and strains of Rickettsia, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and Neoehrlichia mikurensis in I. ricinus ticks removed from human skin, and to compare the prevalence of pathogenic species between ticks collected in urban and rural/suburban areas. A total of 1992 I. ricinus ticks were analyzed for the pres…

Unveiling the Antimicrobial Potential of Ricinus communis: A Comprehensive Review of Its Relevance to Surgical Site Infection (SSI) Pathogens.

Surgical site infections (SSIs) remain a major global healthcare challenge, significantly affecting postoperative recovery, prolonging hospital stays, and increasing healthcare costs. The growing prevalence of antimicrobial resistance further complicates their management by limiting the effectiveness of existing antibiotics. The reduced efficacy of conventional antimicrobial agents due to resistance development, poor bioavailability, and toxic side effects has intensified scientific interest in safe, plant-based therapeutic alternatives. Ricinus communis (castor oil plant), a widely used medic…

Vector competence of Ixodes ricinus instars for the transmission of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in different small mammalian hosts.

BACKGROUND: Many pathogens and parasites can infect multiple host species, and the competence of different hosts as pathogen reservoirs is key to understanding their epidemiology. Small mammals are important hosts for the instar stages of Ixodes ricinus ticks, the principal vector of Lyme disease in Europe. Small mammals also act as reservoirs of Borrelia afzelii, the most common genospecies of the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) spirochetes causing Lyme disease in Europe. However, we lack quantitative estimates on whether different small mammal species are equally suitable hosts for fe…

Possible expansion of Ixodes ricinus in the United Kingdom identified through the Tick Surveillance Scheme between 2013 and 2020.

The tick Ixodes ricinus (Ixodida: Ixodidae, Linnaeus) is the main vector of several pathogens including Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. (agent of Lyme borreliosis) and tick-borne encephalitis virus. Its distribution depends on many factors including suitable habitat, climate and presence of hosts. In this study, we present records of I. ricinus bites on humans, dogs (Canis lupus familiaris; Carnivora: Canidae, L.) and cats (Felis catus; Carnivora: Felidiae, L.) in the United Kingdom (UK) obtained through the Tick Surveillance Scheme between 2013 and 2020. We divided the UK into 20 km x 20 km grids a…

15-year Borrelia prevalence and species distribution monitoring in Ixodes ricinus/inopinatus populations in the city of Hanover, Germany.

Lyme borreliosis, caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) spirochaetes, is the most common tick-borne disease (TBD) in the Northern Hemisphere. Rising incidences indicate that its epidemiology may be affected by global changes. Therefore, the current study aimed to assess changes in tick infection rates with Borrelia spp. over a 15-year monitoring period in the city of Hanover, Germany, as a follow-up to previous prevalence studies (years 2005, 2010 and 2015). To assess the epidemiological risk, ticks of the Ixodes ricinus/inopinatus-complex were sampled from April to October 2020 by …

Antioxidative response in leaves and allelochemical changes in root exudates of Ricinus communis under Cu, Zn, and Cd stress.

We have previously reported that Ricinus communis is a good candidate for the phytoremediation of Cd- and Zn-contaminated soil and for fuel production. In this study, changes in the activity of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, SOD; catalase, CAT; and guaiacol peroxidase, POD) and the contents of chlorophyll and malondialdehyde (MDA) in R. communis leaves under Cu, Zn, and Cd stress were examined. Compounds from the exudate of R. communis roots were collected and analyzed using GC-MS chromatograms. The results of enzyme activity showed that Cd treatment significantly increased the SOD…

Crowdsourcing-based nationwide tick collection reveals the distribution of Ixodes ricinus and I. persulcatus and associated pathogens in Finland.

A national crowdsourcing-based tick collection campaign was organized in 2015 with the objective of producing novel data on tick distribution and tick-borne pathogens in Finland. Nearly 20 000 Ixodes ticks were collected. The collected material revealed the nationwide distribution of I. persulcatus for the first time and a shift northwards in the distribution of I. ricinus in Finland. A subset of 2038 tick samples containing both species was screened for Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (the prevalence was 14.2% for I. ricinus and 19.8% for I. persulcatus), B. miyamotoi (0.2% and 0.4%, respecti…

Co-infection with 'Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis' and Borrelia afzelii in an Ixodes ricinus tick that has bitten a human in Romania.

Despite the vast importance of ticks as disease vectors, the infectious agents transmitted by ticks are still incompletely known in many areas. Here, we report for the first time the detection of the bacterium 'Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis' in Romania, in an Ixodes ricinus tick obtained from a human. Furthermore, the tick also had a co-infection with Borrelia afzelii. 'Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis' is one of the most recent discoveries of a tick-borne agent, and has been found in human patients in several European countries as well as in China.

Prevalence of tick-borne encephalitis virus in Ixodes ricinus ticks in northern Europe with particular reference to Southern Sweden.

BACKGROUND: In northern Europe, the tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) of the European subtype is usually transmitted to humans by the common tick Ixodes ricinus. The aims of the present study are (i) to obtain up-to-date information on the TBEV prevalence in host-seeking I. ricinus in southern and central Sweden; (ii) to compile and review all relevant published records on the prevalence of TBEV in ticks in northern Europe; and (iii) to analyse and try to explain how the TBE virus can be maintained in natural foci despite an apparently low TBEV infection prevalence in the vector population.…
