Stress, health, and mental health symptoms of older women and men.

The objectives of this inquiry were to examine Langner mental health symptomatology screening scores in a community-dwelling sample of older adults, and to explore relations between Langner scores, health, and stress. Older adults (N = 364), who were participants in a study of sex roles, were interviewed in their homes concerning mental health symptoms, health, recent life stress, sex-role conflict, and demographic factors. Respondents reported relatively few symptoms. Symptoms were related to health and independent reports of nervousness and depression in both sexes, and to age in men, but no…

Mineralocorticoid receptor blockade during a rat's first violent encounter inhibits its subsequent propensity for violence.

In individuals naïve to serious conflict in an unfamiliar environment, violence has long-lasting effects on subsequent aggressive behavior. This effect of the stressful experience of a first violent conflict occurs in victims as well as offenders. The authors study in the male rat as offender the role of a rapid corticosterone signal mediated by brain mineralocorticoid receptors (MR) in adjusting the threshold of aggressive responses. For this purpose, the authors have applied electrical stimulation of the brain's aggression circuit via the hypothalamic attack area or HAA. Using this paradigm,

When demands equal distress: An updated understanding of lawyer mental health and well-being.

BACKGROUND: High rates of depression, anxiety, stress, and hazardous drinking are reported within the legal profession, yet large-scale data on current prevalence rates and occupational correlates remain limited or outdated. This study updates prevalence estimates, reports the first large, multi-jurisdictional estimate of work-related burnout among lawyers, and examines how distress, burnout, and drinking relate to practice environments and work demands. METHODS: We surveyed randomly invited lawyers recruited through twenty-eight participating jurisdictions (39,036 respondents; 36,925 eligibl

Controversies in psychiatric education: a survey of residents' attitudes.

The authors administered a questionnaire including statements regarding controversies in psychiatric education to 86 residents in six programs in the Washington, D.C./Baltimore, Md., area. The residents were asked for their opinions on educational policies, ideological issues in psychiatry, their identification with traditional areas of medicine, and future regulatory practices for psychiatry. The data gathered show some shifts in attitudes among first-second-, and third-year residents. They also show a marked inclination toward dynamic-analytically oriented psychotherapy. The authors conclude

Calibration of magnetic and celestial compass cues in migratory birds--a review of cue-conflict experiments.

Migratory birds use multiple sources of compass information for orientation, including the geomagnetic field, the sun, skylight polarization patterns and star patterns. In this paper we review the results of cue-conflict experiments designed to determine the relative importance of the different compass mechanisms, and how directional information from these compass mechanisms is integrated. We focus on cue-conflict experiments in which the magnetic field was shifted in alignment relative to natural celestial cues. Consistent with the conclusions of earlier authors, our analyses suggest that dur

Digital Walls or Digital Bridges? Telehealth for Mental Health Equity Among Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza.

OBJECTIVE: The expansion of telehealth in mental health nursing raises questions about reducing or exacerbating health inequities. For Palestinians living in the West Bank and Gaza facing movement restrictions, infrastructure fragmentation, and chronic trauma, this question is pressing. This conceptual discussion paper critically examines whether telehealth is a "digital wall" reinforcing barriers or a "digital bridge" expanding equitable access. METHODS: This paper synthesizes peer-reviewed literature and United Nations reports. Literature was purposively selected based on conceptual relevan

Civil society and perilous medicine in Africa: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Conflict has not been a public health priority for governmental organisations, and evidence on civil society organisation (CSO) contributions to the issue is limited. The present study synthesised the available evidence on the role of CSOs in conflict and health in Africa. METHODS: We employed a systematic review using a systematic search of MEDLINE, PubMed, CINHAL, Web of Science and Scopus for English written articles between 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2023. The four concepts for the search included CSO or non-governmental organisation (NGO), conflict, health and Africa. RES

Brainstem processing of vestibular sensory exafference: implications for motion sickness etiology.

The origin of the internal "sensory conflict" stimulus causing motion sickness has been debated for more than four decades. Recent studies show a subclass of neurons in the vestibular nuclei and deep cerebellar nuclei that respond preferentially to passive head movements. During active movement, the semicircular canal and otolith input ("reafference") to these neurons are canceled by a mechanism comparing the expected consequences of self-generated movement (estimated with an internal model-presumably located in the cerebellum) with the actual sensory feedback. The un-canceled component ("exaf

Psychosocial outcomes related to subjective threat from armed conflict events (STACE): Findings from the Israeli-Palestinian cross-cultural HBSC study.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the relationship between exposure to armed conflict and terror events, and an array of mental and behavioral outcomes within a large cross-cultural scientifically representative sample of 24,935 Palestinian (7,430 West Bank and 7,217 Gaza) and Israeli (5,255 Jewish and 6,033 Arab) 11-, 13-, and 15-year-old school children. The children of the Middle East have been subjected to exposure from armed conflict and terrorism repeatedly with no adequate research or interventions aimed at shielding them from the hazards of such exposure to their mental and social wel

Interparental conflict and gender moderate the prospective link between parents' perceptions of adolescents' weight and weight concerns.

OBJECTIVE: Parents' comments about their adolescents' weight have been linked with adolescents' disordered eating, but we know little about the personal and contextual conditions that promote or mitigate the effects of parents' perceptions on adolescents' weight concerns. This study examined whether the prospective association between parents' perceptions of adolescents' weight and adolescents' weight concerns differed as a function of exposure to interparental conflict or adolescent gender. METHOD: Participants were 386 adolescents (52% female; ages 11-18 years; predominately Caucasian/Europ

Environmental Challenges and Co-Infection Modulate Resistance and Tolerance Against Trypanosoma Cruzi and Trichinella Spiralis in Rats.

To overcome infection, hosts employ two defense strategies: resistance (which limits pathogen fitness), and tolerance (which reduces infection damage). These strategies may be influenced by environmental challenges such as food shortage, social conflict, and co-infections. Here, our objective was to assess defense strategies in rats infected with Trichinella spiralis and/or Trypanosoma cruzi under environmental challenges. After four weeks of treatment with environmental challenges (food restriction [0/1] and/or social conflict [0/1]), rats were exposed to Tri. spiralis [0/1] and/or Try. cruzi

A Mixed Methods Approach to Understand Mother-Father Relationship and Perceived Stress Among Black Pregnant Women.

BACKGROUND: Black women in the United States report moderate to high levels of perceived stress during pregnancy. Though lower levels of involvement and support from father of the baby (FOB) and higher levels of conflict have been associated with higher levels of maternal perceived stress, it is not clear how Black pregnant women experience the mother-father relationship and its influence on perceived stress. PURPOSE: To examine and describe the mother-father relationship and its role in experiences of perceived stress from the perspective of Black pregnant women. METHODS: Using a convergent

Opportunities to optimize patient experience in the in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinic and the role of genetic counselors.

PURPOSE: To understand factors influencing patient satisfaction with genetics education and psychosocial support in an IVF clinic without a genetic counselor (GC), and how the role of a GC may fill gaps in care using a mixed-method cross-sectional study. METHODS: Previous IVF patients (n = 133) completed a survey assessing satisfaction with genetics education and psychosocial support and decisional conflict about genetic testing. Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to compare satisfaction level to demographic and clinical variables. Spearman's correlation was used to analyze decisional conflict. F

Gene-rich X chromosomes implicate intragenomic conflict in the evolution of bizarre genetic systems.

Haplodiploidy and paternal genome elimination (HD/PGE) are common in invertebrates, having evolved at least two dozen times, all from male heterogamety (i.e., systems with X chromosomes). However, why X chromosomes are important for the evolution of HD/PGE remains debated. The Haploid Viability Hypothesis posits that X-linked genes promote the evolution of male haploidy by facilitating purging recessive deleterious mutations. The Intragenomic Conflict Hypothesis holds that conflict between genes drives genetic system turnover; under this model, X-linked genes could promote the evolution of mal

Unpacking decision difficulty: Testing action dynamics in Intertemporal, gamble, and consumer choices.

The study examined the two-factor structure of decision difficulty proposed by Cheng and González-Vallejo (2017) in new domains, and the role of numeracy in relation to these factors. Using the measurement methodology of 'mouse' (cursor) movements, participants' temporal and spatial measures were recorded when making decisions in the domains of intertemporal, gamble, and consumer choices. Task manipulations designed to affect difficulty included the sign of the payoffs (gains vs. losses), the similarity of the attribute values being compared, and attribute importance. A psychometric analysis o

Automation Expectation Mismatch: Incorrect Prediction Despite Eyes on Threat and Hands on Wheel.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to understand how to secure driver supervision engagement and conflict intervention performance while using highly reliable (but not perfect) automation. BACKGROUND: Securing driver engagement-by mitigating irony of automation (i.e., the better the automation, the less attention drivers will pay to traffic and the system, and the less capable they will be to resume control) and by communicating system limitations to avoid mental model misconceptions-is a major challenge in the human factors literature. METHOD: One hundred six drivers participated in three
