Saliva plays a dual role in oxidation process in stomach medium.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of saliva in the oxidation process under the acidic condition of the stomach. Saliva specimens played varied roles in the lipid peroxidation process of heated muscle tissue in simulated gastric fluid: pro-oxidant effects, no effects, and antioxidant effects. To elucidate these differences, selected saliva components were examined. The pseudoperoxidase activity of lactoperoxidase increased lipid peroxidation, while thiocyanate and nitrite-reduced lipid peroxidation. The effect of a saliva specimen on lipid peroxidation was correlated with the conce

The inheritance of cognitive skills: does genomic imprinting play a role?

Genomic imprinting refers to the differential expression of a gene based on parental origin. Animal and clinical studies have suggested that genomic imprinting is influential in brain development, with the maternal genome playing a disproportionate role in the development of the cortex. The present study investigated this phenomenon in a nonclinical human population, using intrafamilial correlations. Broadly consistent with predictions, it was found that abilities mediated by frontal, parietal, and temporal lobes, but not occipital lobes, were more closely correlated between children and mothe

Hedgehog signaling plays a conserved role in inhibiting fat formation.

Hedgehog (Hh) signals regulate invertebrate and vertebrate development, yet the role of the cascade in adipose development was undefined. To analyze a potential function, we turned to Drosophila and mammalian models. Fat-body-specific transgenic activation of Hh signaling inhibits fly fat formation. Conversely, fat-body-specific Hh blockade stimulated fly fat formation. In mammalian models, sufficiency and necessity tests showed that Hh signaling also inhibits mammalian adipogenesis. Hh signals elicit this function early in adipogenesis, upstream of PPARgamma, potentially diverting preadipocyt

Adenosine A(2A) receptors play a role in the pathogenesis of hepatic cirrhosis.

1. Adenosine is a potent endogenous regulator of inflammation and tissue repair. Adenosine, which is released from injured and hypoxic tissue or in response to toxins and medications, may induce pulmonary fibrosis in mice, presumably via interaction with a specific adenosine receptor. We therefore determined whether adenosine and its receptors contribute to the pathogenesis of hepatic fibrosis. 2. As in other tissues and cell types, adenosine is released in vitro in response to the fibrogenic stimuli ethanol (40 mg dl(-1)) and methotrexate (100 nM). 3. Adenosine A(2A) receptors are expressed o

[Cardiovascular comorbidity in rheumatic disease. Does sex play a role?].

The importance of sex- and gender-related features of various diseases regarding the impact of different risk factors on the natural course of disease, the response to therapy and outcome have only more recently been appreciated. Studies investigating sex- and gender-related aspects in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are scarce. Unambiguous classification of factors of potential pathogenetic relevance or with the capacity to influence clinical course and disease management into sex- or gender- related aspects is difficult (Figure 1). The majority of RA patients is female. As illustrated by Figure 2,

Do pH and temperature play a role in gastrostomy tube deterioration?

The effects of pH and temperature over time on percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube longevity were examined in an in vitro model. Two sets of tubes were obtained from 7 major US PEG manufacturers. Using scissors, each PEG tube was cut cross-sectionally 8 cm from the bumper end of the tube. Both qualitative (photographs) and quantitative (mass) measurements were taken at baseline. Median physiologic gastric acidity was approximated by completely submerging 1 set of each cut PEG tube in a 250-mL glass jar containing a 0.050-N (pH 1.3) solution of hydrochloric acid. As a control, anothe

Modifier genes play a significant role in the phenotypic expression of PKD1.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic kidney disease type 1 (PKD1) is characterized by extreme variation in the severity and progression of renal and extrarenal phenotypes. There are significant familial phenotype differences; but it is not clear if this is due to differences in PKD1 mutations, differences in genetic background, or both. METHODS: A total of 315 affected relatives (83 PKD1 families) without end-stage renal disease (ESRD) were evaluated for disease markers, including renal volume, creatinine clearance, proteinuria, liver cysts, and hypertension. Of these patients, 19% progressed to ESRD withi

Polymorphic variants on chromosomes probably play a significant role in infertility.

Polymorphic variants on chromosomes are considered 'normal', as heterochromatin has no coding potential and nucleolar organizing regions (NOR) contain genes coding for rRNA. Variants have been reported in infertility and recurrent abortions. With refined molecular techniques, genes for fertility and viability are now thought to reside in heterochromatin. DNA sequence analysis of human chromosome 9 has shown that it is highly structurally polymorphic, with many intrachromosomal and interchromosomal duplications, and contains the largest autosomal block of heterochromatin. Transcriptional activa

Evidence that carotid bodies play an important role in glucoregulation in vivo.

The carotid bodies are sensitive to glucose in vitro and can be stimulated to cause hyperglycemia in vivo. The aim of this study was to determine if the carotid bodies are involved in basal glucoregulation or the counterregulatory response to an insulin-induced decrement in arterial glucose in vivo. Dogs were surgically prepared >16 days before the experiment. The carotid bodies and their associated nerves were removed (carotid body resected [CBR]) or left intact (Sham), and infusion and sampling catheters were implanted. Removal of carotid bodies was verified by the absence of a ventilatory r

Do soluble cell adhesion molecules play a role in endometriosis?

PROBLEM: Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory disease associated with diverse immunologic disturbances. Cell adhesion molecules are essential for the development of immune and inflammatory reactions. This study was conducted to investigate whether or not serum and peritoneal levels of soluble cell adhesion molecules are altered in women with endometriosis. METHOD OF STUDY: The study group comprised five women with moderate-to-severe endometriosis. Eight healthy women with a normal diagnostic laparoscopy served as controls. Serum and peritoneal fluid samples from both groups were analyzed f

Does perinatal hypocarbia play a role in the pathogenesis of cerebral palsy?

This study aimed to evaluate the role of hypocarbia as a risk factor for mortality and for cerebral palsy in extremely low birthweight infants. The records for 215 extremely low birthweight children were analysed, grouping the infants into those who died (n = 72), those who had a confirmed diagnosis of cerebral palsy (n = 27) and those without major neurological symptoms at the age of 2 y (n = 116). The analysed risk factors were: birthweight, gestational age, maternal diseases and toxaemia, multiple pregnancy, male gender, respiratory distress syndrome, abnormal neonatal cerebral ultrasound,

Do leptin receptors play a functional role in the endocrine pancreas?

It was recently speculated that leptin may exert a direct inhibitory effect upon insulin release from the pancreatic B-cell. This proposal meets, however, with two objections. First, although the message for leptin receptors is indeed detected in rat pancreatic islets, the short form of this receptor, for which no signalling function is known, represents the major species present in islet cells. Second, in the isolated perfused rat pancreas, leptin (1.0 nM) fails to affect the release of either insulin or glucagon.

Does lactose maldigestion really play a role in the irritable bowel?

Patients who met International Congress of Gastroenterology criteria for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and had breath hydrogen lactose testing were interviewed to determine whether detection of lactose maldigestion (LM) had an impact on their symptoms. Of 199 patients initially evaluated, 161 (81%) were contacted and asked to rate their symptoms. At baseline, 47 (29%) of the IBS group had LM. Before testing, 23 (49%) were aware that ingestion of lactose-containing food was associated with their gastrointestinal symptoms. Lactose-maldigesting IBS subjects (IBSLM, n = 47) and those who had IBS

Anemia plays a major role in myocardial hypertrophy of copper deficiency.

The present study was undertaken to establish whether anemia plays a role in the cardiomegaly and myocardial pathology of copper deficiency. Fifteen weanling male rats were fed a copper-deficient (0.6 microgram Cu/g) diet for 5 weeks. Six rats were intraperitoneally injected once a week with packed red blood cells (RBC) that were obtained from copper-deficient rats fed starch. The remainder (n = 9) served as controls. The administration of RBC to copper-deficient rats fed fructose prevented the anemia. As a result, none of the injected rats exhibited heart hypertrophy or gross pathology and th

Aluminum-induced pulmonary fibrosis: do fibers play a role?

A 50-yr-old man with a history of 19 yr of work in the aluminum smelting industry, including 14 years in the potrooms, was found to have diffuse interstitial fibrosis, slightly more severe in the upper zones. He died of respiratory insufficiency 5 yr after initial presentation. Analysis of lung by electron optical techniques revealed 15,000,000,000 nonfibrous particles and 1,300,000,000 fibrous particles of aluminum oxide/g dry lung, values representing approximately a 1,000-fold increase over background exposure. The nonfibrous particles had a geometric mean diameter of 0.4 mu, and the fibers

Does oxytocin play a role in the onset of maternal behaviour in the rat?

Oxytocin is released during parturition and may also play a role in maternal behaviour. Oxytocin, injected in the cerebral ventricles, has been reported to accelerate the onset of maternal behaviour in oestrogen-pretreated virgin Sprague-Dawley rats within 2 h of injection. This study was an attempt to replicate and extend these findings in Wistar rats. In the first experiment, 16 virgin females were ovariectomized and a cannula was placed into the cerebral ventricle. Forty-eight hours after a single injection of 24 micrograms oestradiol benzoate (OB), 400 ng oxytocin or saline were injected i
