Investigating cognitive control and cognitive emotion regulation in Iranian depressed women with suicidal ideation or suicide attempts.

OBJECTIVE: This study compared cognitive control (working memory, interference control, perseveration) and cognitive emotion regulation among Iranian women with depression who had attempted suicide, had only suicidal ideation, and healthy controls. METHOD: Participants (N = 75) completed a clinical interview, cognitive control tasks, and the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire. RESULTS: Those with suicidal ideation or previous attempts had poorer cognitive control and cognitive emotion regulation than controls. Furthermore, those who had attempted suicide had poorer cognitive control

Efficacy and moderators of metacognitive training for depression in older adults (MCT-Silver): A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Up to 79 % of older adults with depression do not receive treatments commensurate with guideline recommendations. Metacognitive Training-Silver (MCT-Silver) is a low-intensity group training, which aims to reduce depressive symptoms by targeting (meta)cognitive beliefs. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial comparing MCT-Silver (n = 41) to cognitive remediation (n = 39) was conducted with older adults with major depressive disorder and/or dysthymia. Clinician-rated depression (Hamilton Depression Rating Scale [HDRS, primary outcome]), self-reported depression (Beck Depression Inv

Rumination, distraction and mindful self-focus: effects on mood, dysfunctional attitudes and cortisol stress response.

BACKGROUND: Although aggravating effects of rumination on dysfunctional cognitions and endocrine stress responses have been proposed, experimental studies testing these assumptions are lacking. In parallel, mindfulness theory suggests beneficial effects of mindfulness on dysfunctional cognitions. This study aimed to investigate the effects of induced rumination, distraction and mindful self-focus on mood and dysfunctional attitudes and to assess the possible impact of induced rumination on participants' cortisol responses. METHOD: Sixty university students were subjected to negative mood indu

Family functioning and parents' dispositions moderate the affective, attentional and physiological consequences of rumination in children.

In adults, rumination has been associated with costs at affective, cognitive, and physiological levels. We examined if rumination in children is characterized by the same dysfunctional consequences and the possible moderating role of family functioning (cohesion and flexibility) and parents' trait rumination and depression. After induction of rumination, forty children (20 girls; 9.6 years) performed a tracking task with thought probes while their mood, reaction times (RT), heart rate (HR), and variability (HRV) were assessed. Self-reported episodes of rumination were associated with higher HR

What is high rumination?

OBJECTIVE: The current paper tries to illuminate the need for standard cutoff points. INTRODUCTION: rumination is considered to be a transdiagnostic process leading to a variety of consequences. But, what is prominent ruminative tendency? Are there agreed-upon specifications or cutoff points that distinguish between high and low tendency to ruminate? In an attempt to answer these questions, we reviewed 25 works that compared people characterized as high or low in rumination. We found numerous inconsistencies in the characterization criteria and a great variability in cutoff points. Most studi

Cognitive inflexibility and suicidal ideation: mediating role of brooding and hopelessness.

Previous research suggests that cognitive inflexibility prospectively increases vulnerability to suicidal ideation, but the specific cognitive factors that may explain the relation have not been examined empirically. The present study examined the brooding subtype of rumination and hopelessness as potential mediators of the prospective relation between cognitive inflexibility and suicidal ideation. Fifty-six young adults who completed a measure of cognitive inflexibility and suicidal ideation at baseline were followed up 2-3 years later and completed measures of brooding, hopelessness, and sui

Cognitive coping in anxiety-disordered adolescents.

The present study investigated differences in cognitive coping strategies between anxiety-disordered and non-anxious adolescents. In addition, the interaction effect with gender as well as differences between specific anxiety diagnoses was examined. A clinical sample of 159 anxiety-disordered adolescents and a general community sample of 370 non-anxious adolescents were recruited. Nine cognitive coping strategies were assessed in all adolescents (aged 12-16 years). Results showed that anxiety-disordered adolescents had significantly higher scores on most of the cognitive coping strategies than

Aberrant default-mode network-hippocampus connectivity after sad memory-recall in remitted-depression.

Rumination and cognitive reactivity (dysfunctional cognitions after sad mood-induction) remain high in remitted Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and can contribute to new episodes. These factors have been linked to increased fMRI resting-state functional-connectivity within the Default-Mode Network (DMN). It remains unclear whether (I) increased DMN-connectivity persists during MDD-remission, and (II) whether sad mood-induction differentially affects DMN-connectivity in remitted-MDD vs controls. Moreover, DMN-connectivity studies in remitted-MDD were previously confounded by antidepressant-use.

Decentring and distraction reduce overgeneral autobiographical memory in depression.

BACKGROUND: Increased recall of categorical autobiographical memories is a phenomenon unique to depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, and is associated with a poor prognosis for depression. Although the elevated recall of categorical memories does not change on remission from depression, recent findings suggest that overgeneral memory may be reduced by cognitive interventions and maintained by rumination. This study tested whether cognitive manipulations could influence the recall of categorical memories in dysphoric participants. METHODS: Forty-eight dysphoric and depressed particip

[French validation of the Anger Rumination Scale].

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to propose a French version of the Anger Rumination Scale (ARS). The main contribution of this scale is to evaluate cognitive responses involved in rumination experience related to anger. The rumination experience is assessed through four scales: angry afterthoughts, thoughts of revenge, angry memories and understanding of causes. Because anger rumination is related to anger experience, it is usually understood to be a dysfunctional or unconstructive behavior. However, because the rumination involves cognitive activity, it can be assimilated as a cognitive

Depression and rumination: relation to components of inhibition.

BACKGROUND: Recent research has demonstrated that depressed individuals show impairments in inhibiting irrelevant emotional material, and that these impairments are linked to rumination. Cognitive inhibition, however, is not a unitary construct but consists of several components which operate at different stages of information processing. The present study was designed to assess two components of inhibition and examine their relation to depression and rumination in a sample of clinically depressed and healthy control participants. METHODS: Twenty-two individuals diagnosed with a current depre

On the links between self-discrepancies, rumination, metacognitions, and symptoms of depression in undergraduates.

The present study aimed to test the central components of Papageorgiou and Wells' (2003) non-clinical metacognitive model of rumination and depression that is grounded on the Self-Regulatory Executive Function (S-REF) model of emotional disorders [Wells, A., & Matthews, G. (1994). Attention and emotion: A clinical perspective. Hove, UK: Lawrence Erlbaum.]. A second aim of this study was to extend the non-clinical model with the concept of self-discrepancy in line with the S-REF model. Data of the current study were collected in a large sample of non-clinical Dutch undergraduates (N=196), who c

Can't Take My Eyes Off of You: Eye Tracking Reveals How Ruminating Young Adolescents Get Stuck.

Rumination, a cognitive process that involves passively, repetitively focusing on negative feelings and their meaning, is a transdiagnostic risk factor for psychopathology. Research with adults has suggested that attentional control difficulties may underlie rumination, but questions remain about the nature of these processes. Furthermore, the relationship between attentional control and rumination in youth has received little empirical examination. In the present study, 92 youth (ages 9-14; 72% girls; 74% Caucasian) reported on their trait rumination and internalizing symptoms. They also comp

Trait Rumination Is Associated with Enhanced Recollection of Negative Words.

Rumination is associated with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). To better understand this association, researchers have begun to investigate the relationship between rumination and cognitive biases that are linked to MDD. To date, several studies have found that rumination is related to negatively biased memory, but it is not clear whether this relationship is independent of depressive symptoms. To address this question, the present study examined 97 healthy Caucasian women between the ages of 18 and 25. Participants performed an encoding task of self-referent adjectives, followed by a recognit

The impact of physical activity on subjective well-being in college students: the mediating role of rumination and the moderating role of behavioral activation/inhibition systems.

This study investigates how physical activity (PA) impacts subjective well-being (SWB) in college students, focusing on the novel mediating role of rumination and the moderating effects of the Behavioral Activation System (BAS) and the Behavioral Inhibition System (BIS). A cross-sectional survey design was employed, with 1,079 college students participating. Using the SPSS PROCESS macro, the study analyzed the mediating effect of rumination and the moderating role of BAS and BIS. Results showed that: (1) PA significantly predicted SWB; (2) rumination partially mediated the relationship between

Rumination and Emotional Profile in Children with Specific Learning Disorders and Their Parents.

Rumination, namely a cognitive process characterized by a repetitive thinking focused on negative feelings and thoughts, is a significant predictor for the onset of internalizing symptoms and has also been found to run in families. Rumination has never been studied in children with specific learning disorders (SLD), a population that, due to its condition, might encounter more difficulties in daily life and is at risk of increased psychological distress, compared to typically developing (TD) peers. The present study covers this gap by examining whether children with SLD, and their parents, ten

Is trait rumination associated with affective reactivity to the menstrual cycle? A prospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: A minority of naturally cycling individuals experience clinically significant affective changes across the menstrual cycle. However, few studies have examined cognitive and behavioral constructs that may maintain or worsen these changes. Several small studies link rumination with premenstrual negative affect, with authors concluding that a tendency to ruminate amplifies and perpetuates hormone-sensitive affective symptoms. Replication in larger samples is needed to confirm the validity of rumination as a treatment target. METHOD: 190 cycling individuals (M = 30.82 years; 61.1% Cau
