BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality among women in Uganda. Although the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is highly effective in preventing cervical cancer, completion of the recommended two-dose schedule remains low, particularly in rural settings. Rukiga District was selected for this study due to persistently low HPV second-dose (HPV2) completion rates compared with national targets. This study assessed health facility-level barriers influencing HPV vaccine completion among adolescent girls aged 9-14 years in rural Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare practitioners in low and middle-income countries encounter numerous challenges, including insufficient staffing, an unreliable electrical infrastructure, and constrained resources. Unstable availability of electricity constitutes a significant impediment to the efficacy of public health initiatives that depend on technology requiring electrical power. More than 95% of medical apparatus is procured from developed nations, with an only 13% of medical device manufacturers situated within LMIC. Non-profit organizations have developed innovative medical technologies that of

This study explored the patterns of comorbidities and their impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among elderly individuals living in rural communities in Vietnam. A cross-sectional study was conducted across four communes in Thai Binh province. The demographic characteristics and comorbidities of the participants were evaluated, along with their Euroqol-5 dimensions-5 levels (EQ-5D-5L), using a structured questionnaire supplemented by clinical examinations. A multivariate Tobit regression model was applied to assess the relationship between comorbidities and HRQoL. Results showed t

PURPOSE: Hearing loss is the third most prevalent chronic health condition among adults in the United States. Rural adults face disproportionately high rates of hearing loss and numerous systemic barriers to hearing health care (HHC). This study aims to explore experiences of hearing loss, identify factors that impact access, and assess the potential acceptability of a patient navigation program. Perspectives of patients experiencing hearing loss and rural health care providers are vital for designing an intervention that addresses barriers to HHC experienced in rural settings.

Rural gay, bisexual, and other sexual minority men's (SMM) comfort levels answering sensitive health topics are unknown. This online survey explored comfort levels of 399 rural SMM in the Southern United States when responding to five sensitive health topics (sexual behavior, alcohol use, drug use, sexualized drug use, and mental health), as well as examined demographic and behavioral differences in these comfort levels. Multiple linear regression models were analyzed. More than 70% of participants reported being very or somewhat comfortable answering all five health topics. More politically l

BACKGROUND: In recent time, incidence of abdominal injuries continues to increase steadily in most major regions of West Africa due to emergence of various religious, social and political conflicts. Indeed, violence and social conflicts constitute major global public health challenges that commonly lead to injuries and long-term physical and mental health problems. In our setting, increasing cases of abdominal trauma resulting from civilian violence led to additional workload in the general surgery unit and the audit of our experiences is presented in this paper.

PURPOSE: Youth face similar rates of homelessness across rural and urban areas, yet little is known about how the health of unstably housed youth varies by location. We assessed differences in health by location (city, suburb, town, and rural) and housing status among youth facing a range of unstable housing experiences.
METHODS: This secondary data analysis from 8th, 9th, and 11th graders completing the 2019 Minnesota Student Survey examined youth who had experienced housing instability in the prior year (n = 10,757), including running away (48%) or experiencing homelessness (staying in shel

Previous studies investigating health conditions of individuals living near livestock farms generally assessed short time windows. We aimed to take time-specific differences into account and to compare the prevalence of various health conditions over seven consecutive years. The sample consisted of 156,690 individuals registered in 33 general practices in a (rural) area with a high livestock density and 101,015 patients from 23 practices in other (control) areas in the Netherlands. Prevalence of health conditions were assessed using 2007-2013 electronic health record (EHR) data. Two methods we

OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility and effects of identifying tuberculosis (TB) cases by integrating TB screening into routine health examinations for the elderly in rural China.
METHODS: Three counties in Shandong Province were randomly selected for TB screening among three groups of elderly individuals (aged ⩾60 years) at high risk for TB: 1) those with symptoms of TB, 2) patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), and 3) close contacts of TB cases. Individuals with X-rays suggestive of TB were referred to the county TB dispensary for further investigation.

INTRODUCTION: Retention of human resources for health (HRH), particularly physicians and nurses in rural and remote areas, is a major problem in Bangladesh. We reviewed relevant policies and provisions in relation to HRH aiming to develop appropriate rural retention strategies in Bangladesh.
METHODS: We conducted a document review, thorough search and review of relevant literature published from 1971 through May 2013, key informant interviews with policy elites (health policy makers, managers, researchers, etc.), and a roundtable discussion with key stakeholders and policy makers. We used the

AIMS: The study reported here formed part of a larger study that explored the experiences of health-care workers providing palliative care in patients' homes in rural South Africa. This paper hones in on the experiences of male caregivers. Zulu culture has been strongly patriarchal and the gender of a caregiver may affect both patients' and caregivers' experiences.
METHODS: The study was exploratory, qualitative, and combined a visual methodology with unstructured interviews. The setting was a hospice and three home-based care organisations in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Participants we

Poor access to health care is one of the greatest impediments to improved health in Africa. In Zambia, user fees are considered to be partly responsible for substantial disparities in access to health care. When the Government introduced user fees in 1993, considerable concern was expressed about the adverse effects on utilisation and access. A national exemption policy was designed to protect the poorest sections of the population. However, this was largely ineffective in reaching the majority of the eligible population. On January 13th, 2006, the President of Zambia announced a policy to abo

BACKGROUND: Experimentally studying the transmission of the malaria parasite and its regulating factors requires availability of human blood donors carrying infectious gametocytes. The difficulty of identifying gametocyte carriers from the community is often limited due to financial and human resources constraints. The available alternative is rural health centres where malaria patients go for treatment. In this study, the potential of recruiting volunteers and acquiring infectious blood for experimental infections from rural health centers in malaria endemic area was examined through routine

This study examines whether rural Ontario differs from urban Ontario in mood disorder prevalence, health service use and concomitant disability. An epidemiologic community survey of 9953 individuals was conducted, with rural/urban status defined by population-density-related criteria. Overall, Ontario prevalence rates for depression, manic episode, and dysthymia were similar to previous studies, but rural rates were unexpectedly no different from urban ones. Nearly half of mood disorder subjects used no services, and one-third reported significant disability. Rural individuals with mood disord

BACKGROUND: Despite substantial reductions in perinatal deaths (stillbirths and early neonatal deaths), India's perinatal mortality rates remain high, both nationally and in individual states. Rates are highest among disadvantaged socio-economic groups. To address this, India's National Health Mission has trained community health workers called Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) to counsel and support women by visiting them at home before and after childbirth. We conducted a qualitative study to explore the roles of ASHAs' home visits in improving equity in perinatal health between soc

BACKGROUND: World Health Organization (WHO) and Thailand's national policy both advocate for recovery-oriented, community-based mental healthcare. Village Health Volunteers (VHVs) in Thailand have limited involvement in mental health services despite their pivotal role in Thai primary healthcare, especially in rural settings. This study aims to engage stakeholders to identify and prioritise key areas for VHVs' role expansion, stigma reduction, training needs, and common mental health conditions, thereby enhancing VHVs' contributions to recovery-oriented mental healthcare in rural Thai communit
