INTRODUCTION: Small-bowel myeloid sarcoma is rare. Acute bowel obstruction is its usual clinical presentation.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a case of small-bowel myeloid sarcoma that occurred in a 64-year-old woman who presented chronic secretory diarrhoea, hypokalaemia, and weight loss. Immature white blood cells in a peripheral smear and small-bowel capsule endoscopic features were the main diagnostic clues. The patient experienced capsule retention and developed acute bowel obstruction. Urgent laparotomy showed a stricturing ileal mass and pathology of the resected bowel specimen unveil

Myeloid sarcoma is known as a tumor mass of myeloblasts or immature myeloid cells occurring in an extramedullary site. When ophthalmic areas are involved, it is usually located in the orbits and noted at or after the diagnosis of an underlying leukemia. We report a 38 year-old woman who had isolated conjunctival myeloid sarcoma without any other clinical signs and symptoms. Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) was diagnosed after a thorough examination. The image studies revealed no orbital or subcutaneous involvement. The patient had complete remission of AML after systemic chemotherapy. We reported

Myeloid sarcoma of urinary bladder is a rare disorder. We report a 71-year old man with hematuria. He was also under follow up for unclassified myeloproliferative/ myelodysplastic disorder, diagnosed 2 months ago. Abdominal ultrasonography and computed tomography findings were normal. Diagnostic cystoscopy revealed patchy areas of mucosal swelling with hyperemia. Histopathological examination of biopsies demonstrated a neoplasm composed of blasts showing myeloperoxidease positivity by immunohistochemistry. To our knowledge, current case is the first case of myeloid sarcoma without evidence of

Myeloid sarcoma (MS), a tumor consisting of myeloid blasts with or without maturation, occurs at anatomical sites other than the bone marrow. MS of the gastrointestinal tract presenting with jaundice in children is rare. We report the case of a 4-year-old boy with a 6-week history of symptoms of obstructive jaundice due to a peripancreatic mass compressing the common bile duct. Six weeks later, blasts were found in a peripheral smear prior to surgical biopsy; bone marrow evaluation and flow cytometry results led to a diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with MS. No further invasive testin

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is the most common malignancy in the acute leukemia category. AML is a very aggressive cancer with high mortality. The most common presentations include pancytopenia, bleeding, and recurrent infections. Unlike lymphoma, it rarely presents as a mass. Myeloid sarcoma is a peripheral collection of myeloid cells. Myeloid sarcoma most commonly involves the skin and gingival tissue and rarely it affects the central nervous system. Myeloid sarcoma involving the central nervous system is associated with high mortality. We present a patient with AML which evolved from myelo

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare hematological neoplasm that develops either de novo or concurrently with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). This neoplasm can also be an initial manifestation of relapse in a previously treated AML that is in remission. A 44-year-old male patient was diagnosed with testis MS in a local hospital in August 2010. After one month, bone marrow biopsy and aspiration confirmed the diagnosis of AML. Allogeneic mobilization peripheral blood stem cell transplantation was performed, with the sister of the patient as donor, after complete remission (CR) was achieved by chemothera

BACKGROUND: It is unknown whether patients with nonleukemic myeloid sarcoma (MS) and those with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) have similar responses to anti-AML treatment. In the current study, the authors addressed this question by matching MS patients with analogous AML patients and comparing their clinical outcomes.
METHODS: Twenty-three consecutive patients with MS and 1720 consecutive patients with AML were identified who presented at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center from 1990 to 2004. All AML patients and 16 MS patients received cytarabine plus idarubicin or fludarabi

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare extramedullary myeloid malignancy that may occur with or without bone marrow involvement. Nasopharyngeal cases are exceedingly rare, making diagnosis challenging, and most reported cases present with local symptoms caused by a bulky mass. We report a 64-year-old man with a history of myelodysplastic syndrome who presented with cervical lymphadenopathy without any nasal or otologic symptoms. Endoscopic examination revealed a small, smooth bulging lesion on the left nasopharyngeal wall. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography demonstrated a polypoid mass with bilater

BACKGROUND: Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is an extramedullary tumor constituted by myeloid blasts or immature myeloid cells. It frequently occurs in conjunction with acute myeloid leukemia (AML); however, it can exceptionally manifest in patients without leukemia. Here, we present a rare case of primary MS originating in the small bowel without evidence of bone marrow involvement.
CASE REPRESENTATION: A 33 year-old female with no relevant medical history was admitted to our hospital with recurrent abdominal pain. Computed tomography (CT) revealed bowel obstruction due to thickening of the ileum wall,

Myeloid sarcoma (MS), an extramedullary form of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a rare tumor mass of myeloid blasts. It can disseminate to any one or multiple anatomical sites, with (synchronous MS) or without (isolated MS) bone marrow (BM) involvement. The aim of this review is to describe the most recent advances in MS regarding diagnosis, molecular background, various clinical manifestations from several organs, and treatment approaches. Due to the lack of prospective, randomized clinical trials, therapeutic decisions are a challenge for the clinician. In the era of novel targeted AML treat

PURPOSE: Myeloid sarcoma (MS) of the orbit is an uncommon condition in occurring in children, generally coupled to myeloproliferative neoplasms.
OBSERVATIONS: We describe two rare cases of orbital MS in young boys with aggressive local symptoms but without evidence of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), both patients underwent orbitotomy for gross-tumor resection and biopsy. At follow up, there was no evidence of recurrence nor evolution of the myeloproliferative neoplasms clinically and by radiological and laboratory work-up. We also provide a detailed description of the magnetic resonance imaging

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare extramedullary tumor of malignant myeloid cells often associated with acute myeloid leukemia. We report a case of a 17-year-old boy presenting with diffuse red-brown skin nodules ultimately diagnosed with the scarcely described disseminated, de novo MS. It is important for dermatologists to keep MS on their differential when assessing patients with disseminated red-brown nodules.

OBJECTIVES: Pure erythroid leukemia (PEL) is an extremely rare entity that may, even more rarely, evolve from a preexisting chronic myeloid neoplasm (CMN); there is minimal literature regarding this latter phenomenon.
METHODS: We describe 14 patients with PEL that represented progression from a preexisting myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS, n = 8) or myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN, n = 6), three of which manifested as erythroblastic sarcoma (EBS), a rare entity. These patients had a highly complex karyotype with prominent clonal evolution and a very aggressive clinical course.
RESULTS: Patient
