Inflammation and sarcopenia: A focus on circulating inflammatory cytokines.

Sarcopenia is an aged-related syndrome that is progressive and can be accelerated by other concomitant disease states. Sarcopenia, characterized by loss of skeletal muscle mass, reduced muscle strength, and/or reduced physical performance, is one of the main reasons for limitation of daily activities in the elderly. It is associated with an increased incidence of many adverse events, such as dysfunction, falls, weakness, hospitalization, disability and even death. Sarcopenia justifies one of the most widely accepted theories that low-grade chronic inflammation associated with aging, known as i…

The Impact of Sarcopenia in Patients with Peritoneal Surface Disease.

Cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy is increasingly performed in patients with advanced cancer in the abdomen. This treatment prolongs survival for some patients but is known to have a substantial rate of complications. Choosing patients for this procedure can be difficult, and no clear guidelines exist. Muscle mass is a general measure of a patient's wellness, meaning that patients with low muscle mass for their body weight tend to have more complications from treatment and overall do worse. We evaluated muscle mass prior to surgery in our Cytoreductive surgery

Clinical correlates of sarcopenia and falls in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is a complex and multifactorial geriatric condition seen in several chronic degenerative diseases. This study aimed to screen for sarcopenia and fall risk in a sample of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients and to investigate demographic and clinical factors associated. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study. We evaluated 218 PD patients at the Movement Disorders Clinic in Fortaleza, Brazil, and collected clinical data including experiencing falls in the six months prior to their medical visit. Probable sarcopenia diagnosis was confirmed by using a sarcopenia screening t…

Relationship between Sarcopenia and Mortality in Elderly Inpatients.

OBJECTIVE: Sarcopenia, a geriatric syndrome, is an indicator of poor prognosis in elderly inpatients. In this study, we aimed to determine the effect of sarcopenia on mortality in elderly patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Mobile/immobile geriatric inpatients, treated in the internal medicine ward between February and November 2018, were included in the study between Days 2 and 7 of hospitalization. The patients' fat-free mass (FFM) was measured by bioimpedance. The FFM index (FFMI) (kg/m2) was determined by dividing fat-free mass by body surface area (FFM/BSA). Sarcopenia was defined as a FFMI…

[Sarcopenia and Cancer Cachexia in the Treatment of Colorectal Cancer].

Sarcopenia as well as cancer cachexia is recognized as a poor prognostic factor for malignant tumors. Sarcopenia predicts poor surgical outcomes, treatment of toxic effects, and reduced survival. Cachexia, which occurs in up to 80% of those with cancer, is a life-threatening condition associated with several pathologies. In colorectal cancer, sarcopenia and cancer cachexia are less common than in other cancer types. However, sarcopenia or cancer cachexia in colorectal cancer has been also reported, suggesting their association with the effects or prognosis, respectively. Sarcopenia and cancer …

Sarcopenia and frailty in individuals with dementia: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Population aging has resulted in an increase in age-related conditions. Sarcopenia, the progressive loss of muscle mass and strength, and frailty, vulnerability to poor resolution of homeostasis after a stressor, are common causes of functional decline in older individuals. There is a paucity of work on how they interrelate with dementia. The objective of this review was to examine the literature on sarcopenia and frailty in dementia. METHODS AND RESULTS: Studies of sarcopenia and frailty in dementia were searched for in EMBASE, PubMed and Web of Science, and via hand-searching. C…

Plasma Transthyretin as A Biomarker of Sarcopenia in Elderly Subjects.

Skeletal muscle (SM) mass, the chief component of the structural compartment belonging to lean body mass (LBM), undergoes sarcopenia with increasing age. Decreased SM in elderly persons is a naturally occurring process that may be accelerated by acute or chronic nutritional deficiencies and/or inflammatory disorders, declining processes associated with harmful complications. A recently published position paper by European experts has provided an overall survey on the definition and diagnosis of sarcopenia in elderly persons. The present review describes the additional contributory role played …

[Research advances of sarcopenia in chronic liver disease].

Sarcopenia is the main constituent of malnutrition and is a frequent complication of chronic liver diseases, which affects up to 70% of patients with advanced liver diseases. It has been associated with adverse clinical outcomes and prognosis, including poor quality of life, development of other complications and reduction in survival rate of non-transplant patients and transplant recipients. Chronic liver disease causes alteration in glucose metabolism, lipid oxidation, ketogenesis and protein catabolism, leading to the loss of adipose and muscle tissue. In addition, inadequate nutrients inta…

Sarcopenia: A Time for Action. An SCWD Position Paper.

The term sarcopenia was introduced in 1988. The original definition was a "muscle loss" of the appendicular muscle mass in the older people as measured by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). In 2010, the definition was altered to be low muscle mass together with low muscle function and this was agreed upon as reported in a number of consensus papers. The Society of Sarcopenia, Cachexia and Wasting Disorders supports the recommendations of more recent consensus conferences, i.e. that rapid screening, such as with the SARC-F questionnaire, should be utilized with a formal diagnosis being mad…

Characteristics of sarcopenia by European consensuses and a phenotype score.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to assess the clinical characteristics of sarcopenia by the original and revised European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP 1 and 2), and to propose a new sarcopenia phenotype score (SPS) to improve relevance of clinical outcomes. METHODS: Analyses were performed in 1408 older adults of the Aging Study of PyeongChang Rural Area, a community-based cohort in Korea. For sarcopenia definitions, we used EWGSOP 1, EWGSOP 2, and SPS, a new index counting number of abnormal domains among components of grip strength, gait speed, or muscle mass. Frailty status by …

Age-related bone loss and sarcopenia in men.

Bone and muscle are required for mobility but they also have endocrine and metabolic functions. In ageing as well as in many chronic diseases, bone loss and muscle atrophy occur simultaneously, leading to concomitant osteoporosis and sarcopenia. This occurs in both genders but compared with postmenopausal women, men appear to be better protected against age-related bone and muscle decay. Sex steroids (both androgens like testosterone and oestrogens like estradiol) are mainly responsible for musculoskeletal sexual dimorphism. They stimulate peak bone and muscle mass accretion during puberty and…

Impact of sarcopenia on the risk of advanced colorectal neoplasia.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Sarcopenia is a pathological condition characterized by the progressive loss of muscle mass and increased amount of visceral fat. Recent evidence has revealed that sarcopenia is associated with certain diseases. However, the impact of sarcopenia on colorectal neoplasia has not been documented clearly. We studied the association between sarcopenia and advanced colorectal neoplasia in a large screening population. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 14 024 asymptomatic adults who underwent first-time screening colonoscopy. Sarcopenia (class II) was defined as an app…

Herbal Medicine Ninjin'yoeito in the Treatment of Sarcopenia and Frailty.

Frailty and sarcopenia have recently gained considerable attention in terms of preventive care in Japan, which has an ever-increasing aging population. Sarcopenia is defined as atrophy of skeletal muscles caused by the age-related decrease in growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor and sex hormones. The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare reports that frailty can lead to impairment of both mental and physical functioning. Chronic diseases such as diabetes and dementia may underlie frailty. It is important to prevent progression of frailty and extend the healthy lifespan. In herbal…

Therapeutic considerations of sarcopenia in heart failure patients.

Sarcopenia is a common feature, and affects 20-47% of patients with heart failure (HF). Sarcopenia is also an independent predictor of impaired functional capacity, even after adjusting for clinical relevant variables, which is associated with adverse outcome in patients with HF. Areas covered: Several different pathophysiological pathways are involved in sarcopenic processes including altered nutrient intake and absorption, hormonal factor, inflammatory processes, oxidative stress, cellular proteolysis, and unhealthy lifestyle. Nutritional therapy, physical activity and/or exercise training h…

Impact of Sarcopenia as a Prognostic Biomarker of Bladder Cancer.

Sarcopenia, the degenerative and systemic loss of skeletal muscle mass, indicates patient frailty and impaired physical function. Sarcopenia can be caused by multiple factors, including advanced age, lack of exercise, poor nutritional status, inflammatory diseases, endocrine diseases, and malignancies. In patients with cancer cachexia, anorexia, poor nutrition and systemic inflammation make the metabolic state more catabolic, resulting in sarcopenia. Thus, sarcopenia is considered as one of manifestations of cancer cachexia. Recently, growing evidence has indicated the importance of sarcopenia…

Cellular and molecular mechanisms of sarcopenia: the S100B perspective.

Primary sarcopenia is a condition of reduced skeletal muscle mass and strength, reduced agility, and increased fatigability and risk of bone fractures characteristic of aged, otherwise healthy people. The pathogenesis of primary sarcopenia is not completely understood. Herein, we review the essentials of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of skeletal mass maintenance; the alterations of myofiber metabolism and deranged properties of muscle satellite cells (the adult stem cells of skeletal muscles) that underpin the pathophysiology of primary sarcopenia; the role of the Ca2+ -sensor protein,…

Thyroid Hormones Play Role in Sarcopenia and Myopathies.

Skeletal muscle maintains posture and enables movement by converting chemical energy into mechanical energy, further contributing to basal e … DMD) and rhabdomyolysis. During aging skeletal muscle show a decrease in mass and quality, known as sarcopenia. There is increasing evidence that thyroid hormones could have a role in the sarcopenic process. Therefore, in this review, we aim to discuss the main effects of thyroid hormones in skeletal muscular aging processes and myopathy-related pathologies.
