Trichoscopy beyond scalp. A narrative review.

Dermoscopy is becoming an indispensable tool in everyday practice, with an expanding range of applications. Trichoscopy is effective not only in establishing the diagnosis of scalp disorders but also in the follow-up of treatment. The MEDLINE database was searched using the terms "dermoscopy" and "trichoscopy" in combination with each of the following: "axilla," "pubic area," "beard," "eyebrows," "eyelashes," and "body hairs." We included case reports, case series, and review articles mentioning the previous terms. By providing an updated review from the literature, we aimed to emphasize the p…

Sensitive Scalp: Diagnosis and Practical Management.

Sensitive scalp is sensitive skin located on the scalp. Sensitivity is considered primary in the absence of an associated scalp disorder and secondary when caused by conditions such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and atopic dermatitis. The clinical manifestations of primary sensitive scalp are subjective. Common presenting symptoms are burning, itching, trichodynia, and dysesthesia, often coinciding with hair loss. Clinically, the skin appears normal or red. An objective diagnosis based on laboratory or histologic findings is not possible. Triggers may be endogenous (e.g., stress and emo…

Subcutaneous granuloma annulare involving the scalp.

Subcutaneous granuloma annulare (SGA) is an uncommon subtype of granuloma annulare. There are few reports of this entity solely affecting the scalp. We report a case of biopsy-proven SGA in a 21-month-old boy with six asymptomatic, rock-hard scalp nodules.

Two cases of halo scalp ring.

Halo scalp ring (HSR) is a rare form of non-scarring annular alopecia that is attributed to caput succedaneum. It arises perinatally because of prolonged pressure on the scalp by the cervix during or before the delivery. We report two new cases of halo scalp ring in full term pregnancy - newborns.

Surgical Management of Scalp Infantile Hemangiomas.

BACKGROUND: Scalp infantile hemangiomas (IHs) are usually focal lesions that can be both disfiguring and may lead to complications such as ulceration and bleeding. The clinical features of scalp IHs have not been previously studied. This study aims to identify the clinical characteristics associated with scalp IH, the indications for surgical intervention, and results of surgical treatment. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of patients with scalp IH presenting to a tertiary care referral center over the past 7 years. Patients' demographics, clinical features, location, and tr…

Multiple Giant Sebaceous Cysts of Scalp.

Sebaceous cyst is an epidermal cyst often found on the hairy areas of the body such as scalp, trunk and face. Though commonly encountered in surgical practice, its presentation as multiple giant sebaceous cysts over scalp is rare. However, in long standing cases malignant transformation has also been sparingly reported. We report a case of a 52-year-old male presenting with multiple large sized swellings on the scalp, seven in number. These were present since childhood and gradually progressed to the enormous size of largest measuring 10cm x 8cm. Excision of these cysts was undertaken and spec…

Extrafacial rosacea with predominant scalp involvement.

BACKGROUND: Chronic non-specific low back pain (CNSLBP) is highly prevalent in athletes, causing significant time loss up to one year. In the general population, CNSLBP is associated with morphological and compositional changes in lumbar multifidi, a key spinal stabilizer group, including reduced cross-sectional area (CSA), muscle thickness (MT) and increased echo intensity (EI). Whether these differences exist in athletic population is unclear. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the morphology and composition of the lumbar multifidi at two levels in athlete

Poliosis circumscripta unmasking a scalp melanoma.

A 28-year-old man presented with a 1-year history of a localized patch of grey hair and an underlying darkly pigmented lesion on his right occipital area. Clinical appearance revealed poliosis overlying an asymmetrical plaque with variable degrees of brown pigmentation and white discolouration. Owing to the suspicious nature of the lesion, excision with a 2 mm margin was performed. Histology revealed an invasive melanoma with extensive regression and prominent involvement of multiple hair follicles. Scalp melanoma with associated poliosis is extremely rare, and has only been reported once in t…

Scalp metastasis of paraspinal alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma.

We describe a 10-year-old girl with paraspinal alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) who presented with an asymptomatic soft tissue mass on the left aspect of the parietal scalp of 2 weeks' duration. Biopsy demonstrated metastasis of her RMS. A full-body positron emission tomography (PET) scan revealed multiple areas of increased uptake consistent with extensive metastases. We also discuss the literature on RMS classification and metastasis to the skin.

Differential diagnosis of soft scalp lumps.

A 56-year-old man presented with a painless cyst on the top of his head which has been increasing in size in the last 6 months. Due to his learning disability, he could not be dissuaded from his belief that the lump was a sign of brain prolapse which led to increasing agitation in the next 2 weeks. A provisional diagnosis of benign lipoma was made and prompt excision was performed in his best interests. The lesion was more cystic and fluctuant than that of a lipoma and hence it was sent for histological diagnosis. The report came back as a trichilemmal cyst with no signs of proliferation. Cosm

[Familial presentation of multiple scalp tumors].

A 74-year-old woman was referred for evaluation and treatment of a tumor measuring 3 x 2 cm in the left preauricular region that has been progressively growing in the past years. Physical examination revealed an hemispheric and firm tumor with reddish coloration and telangiectases. The patient has been using a wig during the past 15 years to cover the scalp lesions. The patient underwent complete surgical excision of the scalp and the defect was reconstructed with partial-thickness grafts. Given the long-standing evolution and extension of the tumors involving the scalp and face we suspected a…

Scalp hair mercury concentrations in Pakistan.

The presence of mercury in the environment is widespread and persistent, but the extent of exposure of Pakistanis to mercury is virtually unknown. We collected toenail and scalp hair samples from 158 subjects (83 males and 75 females) residing in Lahore and its suburbs. We also conducted a questionnaire survey and personal interviews to obtain information on demographic factors, lifestyles, and socioeconomic factors, among others. Mercury concentration in hair samples was measured by cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (CVAAS). In addition, the concentration of selenium in the toenail an…

Clinical diagnosis of common scalp disorders.

Scalp skin is unique on the body due to the density of hair follicles and high rate of sebum production. These features make it susceptible to superficial mycotic conditions (dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and tinea capitis), parasitic infestation (pediculosis capitis), and inflammatory conditions (psoriasis). Because these scalp conditions share similar clinical manifestations of scaling, inflammation, hair loss, and pruritus, differential diagnosis is critically important. Diagnostic techniques and effective treatment strategies for each of the above conditions will be discussed.
