Tityus caripitensis is an endemic scorpion species found in the northeastern region from Venezuela, being responsible for sting accidents in this area. This study describes for the first time a biological, biochemical and electrophysiological partial characterization of Tityus caripitensis scorpion venom. The venom is toxic to mice with a LD50 of 20.2 μg/gr mouse. Animals experimentally envenomed with Tityus caripitensis venom gradually manifested clinical signs in response to sublethal doses. SDS-PAGE of the venom resulted in 7 fractions ranging in size from ∼3.5 to ≥38 kDa. The 6-8 kDa prote

The systematic annotation of novel peptides found in the venom of scorpions needs revision. The commonly used two-letter acronym with the initials of the genus and the species is not discriminative and induces confusion. A new universal five-letter abbreviated code is here proposed. With this code, every species can be unambiguously identified. The code contains the initial capital letter of the genus, followed by four letters from the species. This code discriminates the large majority of the species. For the few others from the same genus and with coinciding initial letters of the species na

BACKGROUND: Scorpion envenomation is associated with several complications. One of the most serious complications is the cardiac involvement in the form of myocarditis that remains the main reason for mortalities associated with scorpion envenomation. The present review aims to elucidate clinical and paraclinical findings associated with scorpion-related myocarditis, and to explore different management strategies and subsequent outcomes.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar for articles related to keywords of myocarditis associated with scorpion envenomation

BACKGROUND: Ecomorphs create the opportunity to investigate ecological adaptation because they encompass organisms that evolved characteristic morphologies under similar ecological demands. For over 50 years, scorpions have been empirically assigned to ecomorphs based on the characteristic morphologies that rock, sand, vegetation, underground, and surface dwellers assume. This study aims to independently test the existence of scorpion ecomorphs by quantifying the association between their morphology and ecology across 61 species, representing 14 families of the Scorpiones order.

Scorpion envenomation is a major public health problem in tropical and sub-tropical countries, especially in Africa, Middle East, Latin America, and India. Even though most of the scorpion envenomation are harmless, it is generally seen with a set of clinical features, such as pain, edema, numbness, and tenderness in the area of the sting but rarely have serious clinical sequelae with involvement of vital organ systems like cardiovascular system and respiratory system leading to fatal manifestations like acute pulmonary edema, acute heart failure, and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)

Cases of human envenomation by Centruroides pococki are exceptionally reported in human. We report a Class III human envenomation by C. pococki in Guadeloupe, French West Indies, with neuromuscular toxicity that has never been described before. Symptoms resolved within a few hours, without the need for intravenous scorpion-specific antivenom.

Despite scorpion stings posing a significant public health issue in particular regions of the world, certain aspects of scorpion venom chemistry remain poorly described. Although there has been extensive research into the identity and activity of scorpion venom peptides, non-peptide small molecules present in the venom have received comparatively little attention. Small molecules can have important functions within venoms; for example, in some spider species the main toxic components of the venom are acylpolyamines. Other molecules can have auxiliary effects that facilitate envenomation, such

Scorpion envenomation results in a wide range of clinical manifestations that are mostly attributed to the activation of the autonomic nervous system by venom toxins. In fact, sympathetic and parasympathetic disturbances play important roles during poisoning. However, scorpion venom also induces a complex hyperinflammatory state that occurs parallel to systemic inflammatory response syndrome and acute sepsis. After a scorpion sting, innate immune cells are exposed to the venom molecules, which bind to pattern recognition receptors and activate pro-inflammatory pathways that contribute toward t

A 24-year-old woman came to the emergency room of our hospital, 6 hours after a sting to the pulp of her middle finger of her left upper limb by an Indian red scorpion. On examination, she had tachycardia, tachypnoea, hypotension and low oxygen saturation at room temperature. On auscultation, there was poor air entry in all areas of the right lung along with crackles. The left lung field was normal on auscultation. Chest X-ray showed unilateral haziness of right lung field. Two-dimensional echocardiography showed clinical findings of myocarditis. Arterial blood gas showed metabolic acidosis wi

The soluble venom from the scorpion Tityus metuendus was characterized by various methods. In vivo experiments with mice showed that it is lethal. Extended electrophysiological recordings using seven sub-types of human voltage gated sodium channels (hNav1.1 to 1.7) showed that it contains both α- and β-scorpion toxin types. Fingerprint analysis by mass spectrometry identified over 200 distinct molecular mass components. At least 60 sub-fractions were recovered from HPLC separation. Five purified peptides were sequenced by Edman degradation, and their complete primary structures were determined

INTRODUCTION: The preponderance of medical literature regarding severe bark scorpion envenomation describes pediatric patients; however, the majority (>66%) of annual poison center calls pertain to adults. This retrospective review sought to evaluate the clinical manifestations of adults with severe Centruroides sculpturatus envenomation and determine if significant morbidity occurred.
METHODS: This is a retrospective review of adults presenting to a single tertiary referral center with Grade-III or Grade-IV scorpion envenomation from 1 January 2007 to 3 March 2013. The primary objective is t

Scorpion venom is a complex combinatorial library of peptides and proteins with multiple biological functions. A combination of transcriptomic and proteomic techniques has revealed its enormous molecular diversity, as identified by the presence of a large number of ion channel-targeted neurotoxins with different folds, membrane-active antimicrobial peptides, proteases, and protease inhibitors. Although the biodiversity of scorpion venom has long been known, how it arises remains unsolved. In this work, we analyzed the exon-intron structures of an array of scorpion venom protein-encoding genes

Scorpionism represents a serious public health problem resulting in the death of children and debilitated individuals. Scorpion sting treatment employs various strategies including the use of specific medicines such as antiserum, especially for patients with severe symptoms. In 1909 Charles Todd described the production of an antiserum against the venom of the scorpion Buthus quinquestriatus. Based on Todd's work, researchers worldwide began producing antiserum using the same approach i.e., immunization of horses with crude venom as antigen. Despite achieving satisfactory results using this ap

The chemistry of the hydrotris(mercaptobenzothiazolyl)borate anion (Tbz) with metal salts (HgI2, SbI3, BiI3, CoCl2) is reported in an attempt to probe the stability of the of Tbz ligand once coordinated to hard and soft metals. Complexes of Tbz with bismuth, containing the [Bi(Tbz)I3](-) anion, are stable, but with the other metals this is not the case. Although simple complexes such as [Hg(Tbz)I] and [E(Tbz)I3](-) (E = Sb, Bi) can be isolated from the reaction mixtures, subsequent reactions lead to ligand modification or decomposition. In the presence of mercury and antimony we observe the fo

Scorpions are one of the most ancient groups of terrestrial animals. They have maintained a steady morphology over more than 400 million years of evolution. Their venom arsenals for capturing prey and defending against predators may play a critical role in their ancient and conservative appearance. In the current review, we present the scorpion fauna of China: 53 species covering five families and 12 genera. We also systematically list toxins or genes from Chinese scorpion species, involving eight species covering four families. Furthermore, we review the diverse functions of typical toxins fr

The botulinum neurotoxins, characterized by their neuromuscular paralytic effects, are the most toxic proteins known to man. Due to their extreme potency, ease of production, and duration of activity, the BoNT proteins have been classified by the Centers for Disease Control as high threat agents for bioterrorism. In an attempt to discover effective BoNT therapeutics, we have pursued a strategy in which we leverage the blockade of K(+) channels that ultimately results in the reversal of neuromuscular paralysis. Towards this end, we utilized peptides derived from scorpion venom that are highly p
