The overall comparisons of habitats are given in (Table III). The habitats are arranged in order of extent of alterations by man, with the least disturbed at the top. The highest average blood isolation rates came from the least disturbed areas. The highest monthly maximal rickettsial isolation rates from blood and maximal prevalence rates of antibody per month were also obtained at Bukit Lanjan, the habitat least altered by activities of man. The lowest average blood isolation rate (6%) and the lowest monthly maximal rickettsial isolation and antibody prevalence rates were obtained at Bukit M

Scrub typhus infection is now known to occur in geographical and ecological areas where its presence was hitherto unsuspected-north and west of the Indus River and in south-eastern Siberia; in semi-desert, montane desert, and alpine terrain high in the Himalayas, as well as in primary jungle. Additional data are presented to support the hypothesis that "ecological islands", containing basically similar faunas of rodents and ectoparasites, exist on scattered mountains in the Pakistan Himalayas, despite the intervening "barriers" of desert, broad rivers and massive peaks. Since scrub typhus has

Certain features, characteristic of outbreaks of scrub typhus, can be explained by the behaviour of the chigger vectors which are remarkably hardy and can survive weeks of freezing or immersion in water. The established vectors are all species of the genus Leptotrombidium (Leptotrombidium), i.e., L. (L.) akamushi (Brumpt, 1910), L. (L.) deliense (Walch, 1922), L. (L.) pallidum (Nagayo et al., 1919), and L. (L.) scutellare (Nagayo et al., 1921). These chiggers (i.e. larval mites) infest a broad variety of birds and mammals, and tend to be found in clusters on certain specific sites on the host.

Scrub typhus is a zoonotic feverish condition that can range from mild to severe, potentially life-threatening symptoms. Common signs include fever, headache, muscle pain, and a skin rash. Although rare, splenic infarction is a known complication of scrub typhus, with only a limited number of cases documented in medical literature. The case of a 68-year-old male with fever and abdominal discomfort, ultimately diagnosed with both scrub typhus and splenic infarct, illustrates the importance of recognizing splenic infarction as a potential complication of scrub typhus, particularly in areas where

BACKGROUND: Scrub typhus, a vector-borne zoonotic infection caused by the bacteria Orientia tsutsugamushi, is one of the most common and clinically important rickettsial infections worldwide. An estimated one million cases occur annually with a high case fatality rate. Although scrub typhus is a major public health threat in India, the burden and distribution remains unclear. We aimed to estimate the burden of scrub typhus in India.
METHODOLOGY: We performed a systematic review of published literature on scrub typhus from India to extract information on epidemiology, morbidity, and mortality.

The H1N1 influenza infection usually coincides with the typical scrub typhus season in North India. This leads to diagnostic difficulties due to their similar and non-specific symptoms. We describe three patients with confirmed co-infection of pandemic (H1N1) influenza and scrub typhus who had presented with acute respiratory distress syndrome. A systematic review of database yielded one case of scrub typhus and H1N1 influenza co-infection reported from South Korea. Co-infection of influenza with tropical infections may not be uncommon in endemic countries and hence a high index of suspicion o

Pulmonary infections are not uncommon in patients with an underlying immunocompromised condition. Unusual combination of microorganisms causing concomitant infections among these patients has also been reported. However, certain rare dual occurrences are usually unanticipated as in the case we present here. This case highlights the importance of being aware of the possible coexistence of infections in immunocompromised patients. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of coinfection with Nocardia otitidiscaviarum and Orientia tsutsugamushi in a critically ill immunocompromised p

This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the levels of coagulation factors and presence of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) in patients with scrub typhus. We included patients confirmed to have scrub typhus at the Chosun University Hospital between September 2004 and December 2009. The DIC scores were evaluated in 365 patients and 36 healthy controls. The median concentrations of fibrinogen, d-dimer, and fibrin/fibrinogen degradation products (FDP) were compared between patients and healthy controls (p<0.001 for all tests). Patients with scrub typhus had longer prothrombin time a

This is a case report of a 12-year-old returned traveler with typhoid and scrub typhus coinfection. The diagnosis of typhoid was made early with blood cultures and Widal Weil Felix serology. Persistent fever despite appropriate antibiotics for typhoid fever prompted a search for concomitant infection, which led to the diagnosis of scrub typhus confirmed by Orientia tsutsugamushi serology. The patient was given doxycycline with good clinical response. Scrub typhus infection should be an early consideration in the differential diagnoses of fever in a returned traveler from regions where it is en

BACKGROUND: Scrub typhus is a vector-borne zoonotic disease that can be life-threatening. There are no licensed vaccines, or vector control efforts in place. Despite increasing awareness in endemic regions, the public health burden and global distribution of scrub typhus remains poorly known.
METHODS: We systematically reviewed all literature from public health records, fever studies and reports available on the Ovid MEDLINE, Embase Classic + Embase and EconLit databases, to estimate the burden of scrub typhus since the year 2000.
FINDINGS: In prospective fever studies from Asia, scrub typhu

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to identify the factors associated with the occurrence of pleural effusion and to investigate the characteristics of pleural effusion in scrub typhus.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the medical records of scrub typhus patients between January 2004 and December 2011 at Chosun University Hospital in South Korea. A total of 445 scrub typhus patients were divided into the following two groups: without (n = 352) or with pleural effusion (n = 93). The data of 18 scrub typhus patients who underwent thoracentesis were summarized.
RESULTS: Multi

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptors have been reported as severity markers of septicemia. Scrub typhus (ST) results in multi-organ dysfunction but the role of VEGF has not been evaluated. We report VEGF and its receptors in ST and its correlation with severity, outcome and laboratory findings. Thirty patients with ST diagnosed by solid phase immune chromatographic assay and Weil-Felix tests were included. Their clinical details, Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), SOFA and modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores and laboratory findings were noted. VEGF, VEGFR1 and VEGFR2 were done by

The clinical manifestations and complications of scrub typhus are variable. Few studies have examined the timeline of clinical symptoms after the appropriate antimicrobial agents have been administered. The most prevalent clinical manifestations are fever and cough, followed by headache, myalgia, eschar, skin rash, and nausea. Systemic symptoms are most severe during the early stages of illness (i.e., the first 5 days), but resolve slowly within 2 weeks. The associated skin rash is most severe during the first 8 days of infection, but it resolves slowly within 21 days.

BACKGROUND: Scrub typhus is an acute febrile illness widely prevalent in the 'tsutsugamushi triangle' region of the world. Clinical features include fever, myalgia, headache, rash, and a pathognomonic eschar. An eschar is formed by the bite of chigger mite that inoculates the causative agent of Scrub typhus Orientia tsutsugamushi. The aim of this study is to determine the most common sites of eschars over the bodies of patients with Scrub typhus.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a retrospective analysis, we examined a total of 418 patients who presented to Christian Medical College, Vellore between
