Path analysis exploring extensions of the Identity Disruption Model of body dissatisfaction: Incorporating peer bullying and emotion regulation.

The Identity Disruption Model of body dissatisfaction suggests that childhood family adversity is associated with body dissatisfaction via lower self-concept clarity and increased appearance processes (internalization of appearance ideals and appearance comparisons). This study explored possible extensions of the Identity Disruption Model by examining whether peer bullying is another form of childhood adversity associated with lower self-concept clarity, and whether difficulties in emotion regulation could be another pathway through which childhood adversity is associated with weight/shape dis

Explicit and implicit self-evaluations in social anxiety disorder.

Cognitive models of social anxiety disorder (SAD) emphasize the role of explicit and implicit self-evaluations (SEs) in the etiology and maintenance of this condition. Whereas individuals with SAD consistently report lower explicit SEs as compared with nonanxious individuals, findings concerning implicit SEs are mixed. To gain a more nuanced understanding of the nature of SEs in SAD, we examined explicit and implicit SEs in two significant interpersonal domains: social rank and affiliation. Consistent with cognitive theorizing, we predicted that, compared to nonclinical controls (NCCs), indivi

The ups and downs of self-criticism and disordered eating: Complementing Paranjothy and Wade's (2024) analysis by considering both trait and state perspectives.

Paranjothy and Wade's (2024) meta-review reveals that individuals higher in the personality trait of self-criticism consistently experience more disordered eating than those lower in the trait. The clinical implications of this meta-review are important in that they suggest current theoretical models and clinical practices in the field of eating disorders should incorporate a greater focus on self-criticism. Building on this exciting contribution, we highlight conceptual, practical, and empirical reasons why the field would benefit from supplementing this research on trait self-criticism with

Intervention Outcomes, Anxiety, Self-Esteem, and Self-Efficacy With DHH Students in Universities.

This article reports the impact of an online spiritual counseling (OSC) program in mitigating anxiety and building self-esteem and academic self-efficacy among deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students in universities. Compared to online relaxation sessions, the OSC was more effective. Male DHH students and those whose parents were highly qualified exhibited less anxiety and higher self-esteem and self-efficacy at pretest (T1). Post-test (T2) male students having better educated parents responded better to the OSC. T2 anxiety was lower and self-esteem and academic self-efficacy was higher for li

The Effects of Value Conflicts on Stress in Chinese College Students: A Moderated Mediation Model.

Limited research has explored the connection between stress and value conflicts, particularly the influence of self-construal and self-concept clarity. This study surveyed a sample of 752 Chinese college students using the Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale, Self-Construal Scale, Self-Concept Clarity Scale, and Portrait Values Questionnaire. The findings demonstrated that stress levels among participants were significantly associated with conflicts between self-transcendence and self-enhancement values, but no significant relationship was observed with openness vs. conservation conflicts. Mediati

[The effects of subliminal and supraliminal presentation of trait-related words on person perception].

The present experiment was conducted to investigate how prior information affects subsequent person perception and when perceivers can control such an effect. One of three types of trait related words (i.e., hostility-related, friendliness-related, and neutral words) was subliminally or supraliminally presented to subjects, and subsequently, subjects rated the impression of four targets: a hostile person, a friendly person, a neutral person and themselves. Although results did not show that supraliminally presented words affected targets' impressions, they showed that the impressions sometimes

[Internalizing disorders in students with dyslexia].

INTRODUCTION: Students diagnosed with dyslexia show a higher risk of internalizing problems (anxiety, depression, and low self-concept). Therefore, the main objective of this study was to examine internalizing problems in students with dyslexia. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Thirty-seven students with dyslexia (DG) and a comparison group of thirty-nine typically developing students (GC) participated. Selfreport measures of anxiety, depression, academic selfconcept, and reading self-concept were administered. RESULTS: Self-reports of internalizing disorders indicated that students in the dyslexia gro

Toward New Therapeutic Mechanisms in Bipolar Disorder: Analog Investigation of Self-Compassion and Nonattachment to Self.

There is growing interest in psychological processes that might be targeted in treatments for bipolar disorder (BD). One such process is a vulnerability at the level of self-concept, characterized by presence of, and fluctuations between positive and negative self-concept. The aim of the present study was to advance this literature by investigating the role of two emerging meta-cognitive processes - self-compassion and nonattachment to self - which have potential to therapeutically modulate this unstable self-concept in BD. Using an analog design, it was hypothesized that both variables would

Skin tone ideologies, body shame, and sexual risk in Latinx young adults: The role of self-esteem.

Latinx young adults in the U.S. experience significant disparities related to body image and sexual health. These challenges partly stem from the intersections of racism, ethnocentrism, and colorism perpetuated through Eurocentric beauty standards and norms surrounding sexuality. Despite the salience of skin tone within the Latinx community, the impact of skin tone ideologies on body shame and sexual risk remains unexplored. Addressing this gap, the present study examined the influence of skin tone ideologies (i.e., colorist attraction and skin tone self-concept) on sexual risk and body shame

Why are people cosmetic skin whitening? A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Cosmetic skin whitening is a growing practice in a number of countries and long-term use has been shown to have potentially serious health risks. No reviews have documented the behavioral factors that help explain practices related to cosmetic skin whitening. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review exploring the main behavioral (psychological and cognitive, social and cultural, and environmental) factors behind the practice of cosmetic skin whitening, as well as the groups and characteristics are associated with the practice as well as what interventions have been designed to ad

The heart of the self: An interoceptive perspective on the psychotherapeutic process.

Verbal dialogue remains a cornerstone of psychotherapeutic practice. However, advances in cognitive neuroscience increasingly demonstrate that bodily processes fundamentally shape cognition, emotion and the sense of self. In particular, interoception, the neural and psychological representation of internal bodily states, is now considered a fundamental aspect of selfhood and psychological regulation. Expanding empirical evidence highlights interopcetion's clinical relevance. However, the heterogeneity of this literature presently offers limited direct guidance for psychotherapeutic practice. T

Thinking of Oneself as Someone: The Structure of Self-Representation.

One question we can ask when investigating the nature of self-representation concerns the types of property that must figure in its content. Here, authors have claimed that self-representations must be about spatial, temporal, bodily, or mental properties. However, we can also ask a second question: how do we need to represent a property to self-represent it? I address this latter question. I argue that a distinction between egocentric and allocentric forms of representation-known from spatial cognition-also applies to representations of other kinds of property. I use examples drawn from anima

Neuropsychological Integration, a Sense of Relationship, and the Self as Unified Experience.

INTRODUCTION: Although the neuropsychological foundations of the self have been poorly understood to date, a neuropsychological model has recently been proposed that suggests that the self is best conceptualized as a "unified experience" that is created when all neuropsychological processes are integrated in the right hemisphere association area to produce a sense of relationship between them (i.e., that they are occurring to the same entity at the same time, place, and context). This model was recently validated by a factor analysis of the Cambridge Depersonalization Scale that identified emp

Mental illness and personal recovery: A narrative identity framework.

This article presents a metamorphic model to describe the manifold role of narrative identity, a person's internal life story, across the course of mental illness and personal recovery. First, early adversity and negative co-authoring may contribute to the development of a fragile life story, which itself may combine with life stressors to increase the likelihood of mental illness. Second, mental illness may negatively impact the development of narrative identity, which in turn may exacerbate the devastating effects of mental illness on daily functioning. Finally, positive changes in narrative

Self-Objectification and Sexuality: A Systematic Scoping Review‏.

Objectification theory posits that women are viewed and treated as objects valued primarily for their appearance and sexual desirability for others. This feminist framework argues that the ubiquitous objectifying gaze in Western heterosexual culture causes women to view themselves as objects (i.e. self-objectification), which has been associated with negative mental health outcomes - particularly depression, eating disorders, and less frequently studied - sexual dysfunction and satisfaction. Here, we systematically review the empirical work on the relations between self-objectification and sex

Development, Factor Structure, and Psychometric Validation of the Impostor Phenomenon Assessment: A Novel Assessment of Impostor Phenomenon.

Despite growing attention surrounding impostor phenomenon (also known as "imposter syndrome"), recent reviews have suggested that current measures may be inadequate in capturing the complex and multifaceted nature of this construct. The objective of the current studies was to clarify the theoretical conceptualization of impostor phenomenon based on experiences in an achievement-oriented setting. We conducted a review of the literature and developed an item pool for a novel impostor phenomenon assessment (IPA) (Study 1). Exploratory factor analyses (Study 1) and confirmatory factor analyses (St

Experimental analysis of the impact of body comparison on non-clinical women.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Two experimental studies examined the impact that body comparison has on women's body satisfaction and self-esteem. The two studies differed in the use of a human comparator or an avatar (non-human) comparator. The independent variables were the type of body comparison (upward, downward and neutral) and the perceived personality of the comparator. METHODS: Each study used a within-participant design. Participants compared themselves to images of women or avatars (previously rated as 'attractive', 'neutral' or 'unattractive'), with an accompanying 'positive' or negat

Disorder of Selfhood in Schizophrenia: A Symptom or a Gestalt?

INTRODUCTION: The concept of schizophrenia (SCZ) was originally associated with a disorder of formal strata of the self. During the last two decades, empirical studies have demonstrated a selective hyper-aggregation of self-disorders in the SCZ spectrum. As with other scientific research areas, the role of self-disturbances in SCZ has been up for debate in various disciplines including cognitive sciences, philosophy of mind, and psychopathology. Several philosophical papers have used the psychopathological phenomena of "thought insertion" as an alleged example of a complete loss of minimal sel
