Arbovirus isolations from mosquitoes collected during 1988 in the Senegal River basin.

During August and September 1988, we collected adult mosquitoes from 14 locations in the Senegal River basin to search for evidence of Rift Valley fever (RVF) viral activity one year after the 1987 outbreak, which occurred along the Senegal-Mauritania border. More than 62,000 specimens representing 18 species in seven genera were collected with carbon dioxide-baited, solid-state Army miniature light traps and sheep-baited traps. Twenty virus isolations from Culex, Aedes, and Anopheles mosquitoes were recovered from six locations: Fanaye Diery (11), Bode (four), Matam (two), Diongui (one), Ndia…

A pill to control the uterus: misoprostol and reproductive politics in Burkina Faso and Senegal.

African women's uteri have long been objects of biomedical and technological control, from the promotion and discouragement of births by colonial authorities and development experts, to the neoliberal and feminist achievements of reproductive autonomy through consuming pharmaceutical products. We explore misoprostol - a medication for abortion and hemorrhage - as a technology for reproductive control in Burkina Faso and Senegal. By tracing authorized and unauthorized misoprostol use and distribution within and beyond hospitals, and in official and unofficial pharmaceutical circuits, we examine…

Identification of Livestock Ticks and Molecular Characterization of Tick-Associated Microorganisms in Senegal.

Ticks are obligate hematophagous arthropods at all developmental stages, primarily feeding on terrestrial vertebrates. They serve as vectors for numerous pathogens affecting both humans and animals. Accurate tick species identification currently requires an integrated approach combining morphological, molecular, and proteomic techniques. As part of a tick-borne disease surveillance program conducted in 2023 in the Kaffrine and Tambacounda regions of Senegal, ticks were collected from livestock in domestic environments to investigate the presence of Rickettsia spp. and other associated microorg…

Malaria-Related Host Genetic Variation in an Endemic Population of Southern Senegal.

Host genetic variation is a key determinant of malaria susceptibility, particularly in endemic regions where intense transmission has driven strong selective pressures on red blood cell-related genes. However, Senegalese and other African populations remain underrepresented in genomic studies, limiting population-specific inference. We analyzed malaria-related host genetic variants in 140 febrile patients from southern and south-eastern Senegal, focusing on key loci (ACKR1, Dantu blood group, HBB and G6PD) and on composite Multilocus Genotype Profiles (MGPs). We described the co-occurrence of …

[Growing old with HIV in Senegal: an anthropological perspective for a public health policy].

INTRODUCTION: Thanks to the effectiveness of antiretroviral treatment (ART), more and more people in Africa are aging with HIV. In Senegal, 34% of people living with HIV (PLHIV) who received ART were 50 years of age or older in 2022. As people age, their medical, psychological, and social needs gradually change and increase. This article presents the results of an anthropological study that aimed to describe and analyze the living conditions and care of PLHIV aged 70 and over in urban areas, in relation to the health and social context. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The ethnographic study was conduc…

The gender factor in meeting the needs of women who use drugs in Senegal.

Harm reduction (HR) services are developing in Africa. In Senegal, the overall HR service coverage ratio is one WUD for every 10 men. By analysing gender-specific initiatives developed by HR stakeholders and evaluating their limitations, we explored HR in Senegal through a gender lens to better understand how to meet the specific needs of WWUD. The data for this study were collected through interviews, observations, and the researchers' direct presence in drug use settings, as part of a social anthropology research project on the trajectories of WWUD in Senegal. The study reveals that in Seneg…

Malaria prevalence and use of control measures in an area with persistent transmission in Senegal.

INTRODUCTION: In Senegal, the widespread use of vector control measures has resulted in a significant reduction in the malaria burden and led the country to consider the possibility of elimination. Given this shift and changing context, it is important to characterize the malaria burden across all age groups to guide decision-making on programmatic interventions to interrupt transmission and ultimately eradicate the disease. In Senegal, there is a lack of information on malaria prevalence among certain populations, particularly among adolescents and adults. This study sought to assess the magn…

Emergence of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Virus in Eastern Senegal in 2022.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), the most widespread tick-borne viral human infection, poses a threat to global health. In this study, clinical samples collected through national surveillance systems were screened for acute CCHF virus (CCHFV) infection using RT-PCR and for exposure using ELISA. For any CCHF-positive sample, livestock and tick samples were also collected in the neighborhood of the confirmed case and tested using ELISA and RT-PCR, respectively. Genome sequencing and phylogenetic analyses were also performed on samples with positive RT-PCR results. In Eastern Senegal, two …

Molecular Survey of Rodent-Borne Infectious Agents in the Ferlo Region, Senegal.

Zoonotic pathogens are responsible for most infectious diseases in humans, with rodents being important reservoir hosts for many of these microorganisms. Rodents, thus, pose a significant threat to public health. Previous studies in Senegal have shown that rodents harbour a diversity of microorganisms, including human pathogens. Our study aimed to monitor the prevalence of infectious agents in outdoor rodents, which can be the cause of epidemics. We screened 125 rodents (both native and expanding) from the Ferlo region, around Widou Thiengoly, for different microorganisms. Analysis, performed …
