Spatial concentration gradients of antibiotics are prevalent in the natural environment. Yet, the microbial response in these heterogeneous systems remains poorly understood. We used a microfluidic reactor to create an artificial microscopic ecosystem that generates diffusive gradients of solutes across interconnected microenvironments. With this reactor, we showed that chemotaxis toward a soluble electron acceptor (nitrate) allowed Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 to inhabit and sustain metabolic activity in highly toxic regions of the antibiotic ciprofloxacin (>80× minimum inhibitory concentration

Photodynamic inactivation (PDI) is a novel sterilization technology that has proven effective in medicine. This study focused on applying PDI to food packaging, where chitosan (CS) films containing photosensitizing riboflavin (RB) were prepared via solution casting. The CS-RB composite films exhibited good ultraviolet (UV)-barrier properties, and had a visually appealing highly transparent yellow appearance. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed even dispersion of RB throughout the CS film. The addition of RB led to improved film characteristics, including the thickness, mechanical prop

Chemical biocides remain the most effective mitigation strategy against microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC), one of the costliest and most pervasive forms of corrosion in industry. However, toxicity and environmental concerns associated with these compounds are encouraging the development of more environmentally friendly MIC inhibitors. In this study, we evaluated the antimicrobial effect of a novel, multi-functional organic corrosion inhibitor (OCI) compound, cetrimonium trans-4-hydroxy-cinnamate (CTA-4OHcinn). Attachment of three bacterial strains, Shewanella chilikensis, Pseudomona

Six strains of bacteria including Bacillus mycoides (A10) and Shewanella species (A12) isolated from healthy marron intestine, Bacillus species (PM1), Bacillus subtilis (PM3), Bacillus sp. (PM4) and Bacillus sp. (AQ) from commercial probiotic products were investigated for probiotic potential in marron culture. Antibiotic susceptibility tests indicated PM3 and PM4 were susceptible to all nine antibiotics evaluated. A10, A12 and AQ were resistant to class penicillins, whereas PM1 was resistant to class penicillin and macrolides. All strains were non-pathogenic for marron. Strong inhibition agai

We report a mass spectrometry-based strategy for quantitative analysis of cell surface membrane proteome changes. The strategy includes enrichment of surface membrane proteins using a membrane-impermeable chemical probe followed by stable isotope (18)O labeling and LC-MS analysis. We applied this strategy for enriching membrane proteins expressed by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, a Gram-negative bacterium with known metal-reduction capability via extracellular electron transfer between outer membrane proteins and extracellular electron receptors. LC/MS/MS analysis resulted in the identification o

Mercuric Hg(II) species form complexes with natural dissolved organic matter (DOM) such as humic acid (HA), and this binding is known to affect the chemical and biological transformation and cycling of mercury in aquatic environments. Dissolved elemental mercury, Hg(0), is also widely observed in sediments and water. However, reactions between Hg(0) and DOM have rarely been studied in anoxic environments. Here, under anoxic dark conditions we show strong interactions between reduced HA and Hg(0) through thiolate ligand-induced oxidative complexation with an estimated binding capacity of ~3.5 μ

Pyrogenic carbon (PC) including black carbons and engineered carbons can mediate the extracellular electron transfer to facilitate the biogeochemical reaction with organic pollutants. Yet, the role of carbon structures and iron minerals on PC-mediated microbial degradation is still lacking of understanding. Herein, we studied the electrochemical properties of PCs produced from varied feedstock with regards to the mediated degradation of p-nitrophenol (PNP) by Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 in anoxic system. Mediated degradation by PCs was enhanced by facilitating extracellular electron transfer

This study investigated alginate-immobilized planktonic electroactive bacteria directly coated onto a carbon-felt anode as an alternative bioanode configuration without prolonged biofilm development. Carbon-black (CB) nanoparticles were incorporated into the alginate matrix to enhance conductivity and facilitate extracellular electron transfer (EET). The electrochemical performance of alginate-immobilized Shewanella oneidensis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was systematically evaluated by examining the effects of bacterial density and CB-nanoparticle loading. For both bacterial systems, the optima

The increase in antibiotic-resistant pathogens has prompted the search for alternative therapies. One such alternative is the use of probiotic microorganisms. However, growing interest is now turning toward postbiotics-non-viable microbial cells and/or their components or metabolites-that can confer health benefits without the risks associated with administering live microbes. Marine ecosystems, characterized by extreme and diverse environmental conditions, are a promising yet underexplored source of microorganisms capable of producing unique postbiotic compounds. These include bioactive pepti

Biosynthesis offers an environmentally sustainable approach for producing organic-modified nanomaterials, which exhibit significant potential in biomedicine, anticancer therapies, and antimicrobial applications. The influence of nutritional conditions on the physiological functions and biosynthetic capabilities of microorganisms is profound and critical. This study investigates the modulation of intracellular and extracellular biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by altering the nutritional environment of the fungus Trichoderma viride (T. viride). The mechanisms of AgNP biosynthesis ar

To characterize the source and effects of bacterial communities on corrosion of intertidal structures, three different UK coastal sites were sampled for corrosion materials, sediment and seawater. Chemical analyses indicate the activity of sulfate-reducing microbes (SRBs) at 2 sites (Shoreham and Newhaven), but not at the third (Southend-on-Sea). Microbial communities in the deep sediment and corrosion samples are similar. The phylum Proteobacteria is dominant (40.4% of the total ASV), followed by Campilobacterota (11.3%), Desulfobacterota and Firmicutes (4%-5%). At lower taxonomic levels, cor

Antibiotic resistance is an increasingly concerned hotspot of human health. Microbial determinants that may affect the profiles of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environments need be explored. Here, sediment cores in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) were analyzed using metagenomic approaches. ARGs were vertically stratified in the PRE sediment cores in terms of both diversity and absolute levels. Multidrug resistance genes could account for approximately 65.0% of the total ARGs, followed by sulfonamides (19.1%), aminoglycosides (5.9%), beta-lactams (4.5%), etc. ARGs related to aminogly

The present study was aimed to obtain a close insight into the distribution and diversity of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) among the aquatic products collected in Zhejiang, China. A total of 136 presumptive ARB picked up from six aquatic samples were classified into 22 genera and 49 species based on the 16S rDNA sequencing. Aeromonas spp., Shewanella spp., Acinetobacter spp., Myroides spp., Pseudomonas spp., and Citrobacter spp. accounted for 80% of the ARB. Among them, 109 isolates (80.15%) exhibited resistance to at least one antibiotic. Most isol

Signaling molecule that interacts with mouse pelle-like kinase (Simpl) is an animal protein that contributes to the regulation of inflammatory responses. Although Simpl-like proteins (SLPs) are mainly found in bacteria, functional and structural studies on bacterial SLPs are limited to BP26, a periplasmic protein from Brucella species. We identified a group of bacterial SLPs, including Campylobacter jejuni SLP (cjSLP) and Shewanella putrefaciens SLP (spSLP), that exhibit significant sequence variation from Simpl and BP26. To address the structural and oligomeric diversities of SLPs, we determi

Semi-conducting Fe oxide minerals, such as hematite, are well known to influence the fate of contaminants and nutrients in many environmental settings through sorption and release of Fe(II) resulting from microbial or abiotic reduction. Studies of Fe oxide reduction by adsorbed Fe(II) have demonstrated that reduction of Fe(III) at one mineral surface can result in the release of Fe(II) on a different one. This process is termed "Fe(II) catalyzed recrystallization" and is believed to be the result of electron transfer through semi-conducting Fe (hydr)oxides. While it is well understood that Fe(

Organoarsenical biotransformations are important components of the global cycling of arsenic. Roxarsone (3-nitro-4-hydroxybenzenearsenate or Rox(V)) and nitarsone (4-nitrobenzene arsenate or Nit(V)) are synthetic aromatic organoarsenicals used in the poultry industry as additives to prevent coccidiosis and improve feed efficiency. Here, we describe a novel pathway of resistance to roxarsone and nitarsone involving biotransformation of their trivalent forms (Rox(III)) and (Nit(III)) to the trivalent organoarsenicals HAPA(III) and pAsA(III), coupled to active extrusion of the aromatic aminobenez

The interaction of ciprofloxacin chlorination products (CIP-CPs) with bacteria in drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) was investigated. The piperazine ring of CIP was destroyed by chlorination. Among of CIP-CPs, by the bacterial role, 7.63% of the derivative with two carboxylic groups went through decarboxylation to form desethylene ciprofloxacin, and then loss of C2H5N group generated aniline compound. Furthermore, 12.3% of the aniline compound, 7.60% of chlorinated aniline compound and 1.35% of defluorinated product were bio-mineralized. Therefore, the chlorine and bacteria played sy

The bovine nasopharyngeal tract plays an important role in animal health and welfare by acting as a site for the carriage of pathogens causing bovine respiratory disease, a condition which results in significant morbidity and mortality in feedlot cattle. We characterized the bacterial nasopharyngeal microbiota in cattle at feedlot entry (day 0) and day 60 using 454 pyrosequencing. We also identified the most frequently isolated aerobic bacteria from nasopharyngeal swabs after plating onto three types of media. The cattle nasopharyngeal microbiota was composed primarily of Proteobacteria (68.9%

Biologically produced monometallic palladium nanoparticles (bio-Pd) have been shown to catalyze the dehalogenation of environmental contaminants, but fail to efficiently catalyze the degradation of other important recalcitrant halogenated compounds. This study represents the first report of biologically produced bimetallic Pd/Au nanoparticle catalysts. The obtained catalysts were tested for the dechlorination of diclofenac and trichlorethylene. When aqueous bivalent Pd(II) and trivalent Au(III) ions were both added to concentrations of 50 mg L(-1) and reduced simultaneously by Shewanella oneid

Marine microbial metabolites have long served as valuable sources for drug discovery, exhibiting diverse biological activities, including antiparasitic, antimicrobial, and antiviral effects. Chagas disease (CD), a neglected tropical disease caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, affects approximately 8 million people worldwide. Currently, only two drugs are available for treatment, both associated with significant toxicity, underscoring the urgent need for new therapeutic alternatives. In this context, and considering the remarkable chemical diversity of marine bacteria, the present study investigated t
