There is a major need for an empirical evaluation of classification criteria for somatoform disorders. The present study analyzes psychometric properties of the existing criteria for somatization disorder. The full sample consisted of 324 patients seeking help because of "psychosomatic problems." Behavioral medicine is a newer approach in the management of various diseases. In the last years, special programs have been developed for atopic dermatitis, psoriasis vulgaris and other chronic skin diseases. An increase in the patient's self-control could be achieved by optimizing the patient's skills in dealing with their skin disease. The article summarizes the principles and procedures of in-patient behavioral medicine, especially the strategies employed by dermatological training groups and psychotherapeutical groups to help the patient deal with their skin disorder.

We describe a 31-year-old man who has been living in a 'locked-in' condition for the past 12 years. Extensive testing, using both the patient's residual eye movements and a writing apparatus, showed preserved cognitive abilities in spite of the long-standing de-efferentation. The emotional consequences of this condition are discussed in relation with the results of personality testing.
