BACKGROUND: Russell-Silver syndrome (RSS) is characterized by intrauterine growth retardation, short stature without postnatal catch-up growth, and an inverted triangular face with relative macrocephaly. There have been few case reports of RSS with cleft palate, in which perioperative problems such as difficult intubation due to trismus and impossibility to wear a mouth gag due to growth failure of the mandible were described. Transparent AgI-CuI heterojunctions with high rectifying diode behavior were prepared via vapor-phase iodization of metal thin films on transparent conducting oxide substrates. At room temperature, Ag and Cu metal thin films were quickly transformed into the transparent and well-crystallized β-phase of AgI and the γ-phase of CuI, respectively. Oocysts of the waterborne protozoan parasite Cryptosporidium parvum are highly resistant to chlorine disinfection. We show here that both silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and silver ions significantly decrease oocyst viability, in a dose-dependent manner, between concentrations of 0.005 and 500 μg/ml, as assessed by an excystation assay and the shell/sporozoite ratio. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the molluscicidal effect of a novel nano-silver biological molluscicide in the field and its toxicity to other aquatic organisms.
METHODS: A marshland of the Qiupu River was selected as the study site. Four 1 m3 pools were excavated. Four groups, including 300 g/m3 and 600 g/m3 nano-silver biological molluscicide groups, a 2 g/m3 50% niclosamide group, and a natural water (control) group were assigned to the four pools which had 100 Oncomelania hupensis snails and 100 crucian seedlings. The molluscicidal effects and toxicity to the aquatic organisms were observed.
