Sinus augmentation procedure via the lateral window technique-Reducing invasiveness and preventing complications: A narrative review.

Sinus augmentation has become an integrated surgical phase in posterior maxillary implant prosthesis reconstruction. Since the residual alveolar bony height usually requires additional volume particularly at this anatomical region, sinus floor augmentation is advocated routinely. Over the years, Implant success rate is proved to be comparable to the one in the pristine bone, which is well documented in the literature. Anatomical aspects as well as surgeon skills are at most importance to achieve predictable outcome. In this narrative review, the different osteotomy techniques, the indications …

Remediation of a Failed Lateral Window Sinus Augmentation via a Palatal Approach: Rationale and Case Report.

Maxillary sinus elevation by the lateral window approach has been shown to be a highly predictable surgical procedure for increasing bone volume in the posterior maxilla. There are occasions, however, where this procedure may be difficult or impossible to perform in a highly predictable manner. There are many presurgical conditions and anatomical features that can make lateral window access difficult, leading to an increase in intraoperative complications and procedural failures. These complicating factors include complex internal sinus anatomy (multiple septa, anteroposterior septa), a narrow

Classification of Sinus Membrane Perforations Occurring During Transcrestal Sinus Floor Elevation and Related Treatment.

The predictability of transcrestal sinus floor elevation (tSFE) in elevating the sinus membrane following posterior maxillary ridge resorption has been widely demonstrated. To minimize complications and increase success, a literature search was conducted to validate procedures used for tSFE. A decision tree based upon timing of perforations was then developed to improve membrane-perforation management during the procedure. At each surgical procedure, the clinician is encouraged to use size of the perforation, time during the procedure in which the perforation occurred, and resulting symptoms t

Update on Maxillary Sinus Augmentation.

Implant stability is critical to implant success, and the amount of available bone is vital to achieving that end. Because of low-lying maxillary sinuses, adequate alveolar height on the posterior maxilla is often lacking in many patients in need of implant replacement. This chapter reviews both the traditional lateral sinus lift maxillary approach to achieve vertical augmentation as well as the transcrestal osteotome intraoral approach. A discussion of osseodensification will also be mentioned as an alternative approach.

A radiologic evaluation of the incidence and morphology of maxillary sinus septa in Japanese dentate maxillae.

PURPOSE: Evaluation of the inner aspect of the maxillary sinus is important for the success of a sinus lift procedure. The most common surgical complication is perforation of the Schneiderian membrane, which is thought to occur because of the presence of maxillary sinus septa. Therefore, we retrospectively investigated the incidence and morphology of maxillary sinus septa using multiplanar reformatted computed tomographic (CT) images from dentate Japanese patients. METHODS: A total of 276 patients and 552 maxillary sinus segments were evaluated. The maxillary sinus septa were divided into fou

An alternative approach to transalveolar sinus elevation for the placement of multiple implants.

Traditional approaches to sinus floor elevation for dental implant placement have limitations. This technical report describes a modified transalveolar method of elevating the sinus membrane when 2 or more implants are placed simultaneously in a maxillary posterior area where the residual bone height is insufficient. With a narrow osteotomy connecting drilled holes, the Schneiderian membrane can be directly elevated with curettes as with the lateral approach, resulting in a reduced risk of perforation.

Diagnostic information of computed tomography of the upper jaw in patients required implant rehabilitation.

OBJECTIVE: Introduction: Dental implantation in conditions of bone deficiency in the loss of lateral group of teeth of the upper jaw is impossible without the maxillary sinus floor augmentation. Preparation for surgical intervention requires a thorough assessment of the anatomical features of the sinus, relationship between the sinus and adjacent teeth, detection of foci of chronic infection of the Schneiderian membrane. In the complex of the objective methods of investigation, computed tomography is the most informative approach to study the state of the bone and soft tissue structure of the …

Anatomical Considerations on the Alveolar Antral Artery as Related to the Sinus Augmentation Surgical Procedure.

BACKGROUND: The alveolar antral artery (AAA) is a vascular structure that often passes through the area of lateral window opening during sinus augmentation and can reach dimensions that, if the vessel is severed, can represent a serious complication of the surgical procedure. PURPOSE: With this narrative review, we aimed at summarizing the results obtained from all the studies that analyzed the variability in anatomical position and dimension of the AAA in order to give the clinician a reference when planning for a sinus augmentation surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A search of available lite
