OBJECTIVES: Retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) is a rare autoimmune disease with fibrous tissue growth and inflammation in retroperitoneum. Its current treatments involve long-term uptake of glucocorticoids (e.g., prednisone) for controlling inflammation; however, side effects are common. Congenital hepatic hemangioma (CHH) is a common benign vascular tumor of the liver, seen in infancy. The clinical manifestations vary from incidental findings to life-threatening complications. The authors present here a case of an infant with massive CHH who developed systemic hypertension because of compression of the right renal artery by the CHH and did not respond to other lines of treatment. In the last few years, the use of oral sirolimus has shown promising results in the treatment of some complex vascular anomalies, and recently, it has been used in patients with Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS). We present the case of an 11-year-old girl with the diagnosis of SWS and hemifacial overgrowth treated with oral sirolimus. Throughout the eight months of follow-up, improvement of the port-wine birthmark, intraocular pressure, and neurocognitive development was noted. The mTOR inhibitors may be useful in the treatment of some patients with SWS.
