This study documents the optical reflectance characteristics of pigmented skin lesions and evaluates their potential for improving the differential diagnosis of malignant melanoma from benign pigmented skin lesions. Optical reflectance spectra in the wavelength range 320-1100 nm were obtained from 121 lesions already selected by expert dermatologists as suspicious of malignancy. In this case report a patient with bilateral optic nerve hypoplasia, schizencephaly and a pigmented skin lesion is described. The diagnosis of de Morsier syndrome or septo-optic dysplasia is put forward on the basis of the diagnosis of optic nerve hypoplasia. The differential diagnosis with Jadassohn's naevus phakomatosis is discussed. The importance of direct ophthalmoscopy of optic nerve abnormalities is stressed, as well as of magnetic resonance imaging, which has become a guideline in the classification of this syndrome.

Forty-one cases of typical melanocytic skin lesions (15 intradermal nevi, 14 Spitz nevi and 12 malignant melanomas) were used to investigate the value of staining of nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) in the differential diagnosis of such pigmented lesions. Histologic sections were stained by the silver colloid (Ag) method, with and without the prior use of a melanin blocking agent. We present the development of a simple, handheld cross-polarised microscope (CPM) and demonstration of imaging individual pigmented cells in human skin in vivo. Immediate pigment darkening (IPD) was recorded in over 1,300 volunteers participating in routine sun protection factor (SPF) testing.
