Measuring Urban Vibrancy of Residential Communities Using Big Crowdsourced Geotagged Data.

The pervasiveness of mobile and sensing technologies today has facilitated the creation of Big Crowdsourced Geotagged Data (BCGD) from individual users in real time and at different locations in the city. Such ubiquitous user-generated data allow us to infer various patterns of human behavior, which helps us understand the interactions between humans and cities. In this article, we aim to analyze BCGD, including mobile consumption check-ins, urban geography data, and human mobility data, to learn a model that can unveil the impact of urban geography and human mobility on the vibrancy of reside

Demographic and socioeconomic status differences in perceptions of difficulty with mobility in late life.

OBJECTIVES: This study assesses whether socioeconomic and demographic differences in reported mobility limitations are attributable to differential perceptions of mobility difficulty that result in the differential use of response categories. METHODS: Data come from the Social Environment and Biomarkers of Aging Study and its parent study, the Taiwan Longitudinal Study of Aging. Ordered probit models with person-specific cut-points are used to test whether, after controlling for underlying mobility using objective performance measures, cut-points for reporting mobility limitations vary across

How university students view disabled people: The role of wheelchairs, canes, and unspecified mobility aids.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: Mobility aids are important to disabled people as a functional tool that can enhance their participation in leisure activities and work; however, mobility aids may also have implications for how disabled people are viewed by others. Using theories from social psychology, this study aimed to understand how mobility aids contribute to the perception of mobility aid users. RESEARCH METHOD: A total of 259 participants without disabilities, who were primarily young, Caucasian, female-identifying university students, completed the questionnaires. The primary questionnaires of int

Variant patterns and influence of inter-regional travel during the SARS-CoV-2 expansion in South Africa.

We evaluated the dynamic impacts of three types of human mobilities-provincial inflows, cross-district flows, and within-district flows-on daily reported COVID-19 cases for 2020. Using a structural equation modeling approach, we conducted regressions on dynamic panel datasets. Our findings indicate that these three types of mobility influenced daily new COVID-19 case numbers in distinct and sometimes overlapping ways during the early stages of the epidemic. Within-district flows played a particularly significant role in increasing cases during the spreading stage. During the epidemic stage, we

Smartphone-based markers of social connectivity in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Social isolation and social impairment are hallmarks of progression as well as predictors of relapse in psychiatric disorders. We conducted a pilot study to assess the feasibility of sensing the social activity phenotype and loneliness using active and passive markers collected using a smartphone application. The study included 9 schizophrenia and bipolar disorder patients followed in the Bipolar Longitudinal study for at least 1 month and for whom mobile communication data was collected using the Beiwe smartphone application. Subjects completed daily surveys on digital and in-person social ac

Interpersonal value regulates infection-risky social contact across 61 societies.

Interpersonal contact is essential for cooperation and care, but it also provides a route for pathogen transmission between individuals. Hence, a key challenge for social organisms involves maintaining beneficial social contact while also limiting exposure to infection risks. Existing proposals suggest that this trade-off is guided by the interpersonal value of specific social targets. In addition, ecological and cultural factors, including historical pathogen prevalence, individualism-collectivism, tightness-looseness, and relational mobility, might also shape how people avoid pathogens. To t

Urban density and depression during COVID-19 in Seoul: Moderating effects of social participation.

The COVID-19 pandemic, a global public health crisis, has had a profound and long-lasting impact on mental health worldwide. While existing studies on the pandemic have examined the relationship between urban characteristics and mental health, there remains a lack of understanding of the temporal distinctions of the pandemic, age-specific differences, and the role of social participation. This study empirically analyzed the relationship between COVID-19-related depressive symptoms and urban density characteristics, with a focus on the moderating effect of social participation by age group and

Disabled-by-design: effects of inaccessible urban public spaces on users of mobility assistive devices - a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Despite the increase of users of Mobility Assistive Devices (MobAD), there has been a lack of accessibility in urban environments in many parts of the world. We present a systematic review of how the inaccessible design of public spaces affects quality-of-life - including aspects of health and safety, independence, and social participation - of MobAD users. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a literature search in three databases (i.e., Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed) and initially discovered 3980 publications. We analysed 48 peer-reviewed journal articles published in English f

Design and development of mobility equipment for persons with disabilities in low-resource and tropical settings: bamboo wheelchairs.

PURPOSE: For persons with disabilities in low-resource and tropical settings, barriers to mobility and physical activity are steep. The aim of this study was to develop and test two low-cost, durable, sustainable, purpose-built wheelchair prototypes to support wheelchair users in low-resource and tropical settings. These bamboo wheelchairs, nicknamed African Chairs by Ghanaian daily manual wheelchair users who tested the devices, adopt two designs: an urban-targeted and a rural-targeted design. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The rural-targeted design incorporated stability as its key design property

Low hospital mobility-resurgence of an old epidemic within a new pandemic and future solutions.

Low mobility during hospitalisation poses risks of functional decline and other poor outcomes for older adults. Given the pervasiveness of this problem, low mobility during hospitalisation was first described as 'dangerous' in 1947 and later described as an epidemic. Hospitals have made considerable progress over the last half-century and the last two decades in particular, however, the COVID-19 pandemic presents serious new challenges that threaten to undermine recent efforts and progress towards a culture of mobility. In this special article, we address the question of how to confront an epi

They cannot sit properly or move around: seating and mobility during treatment for developmental dysplasia of the hip in children.

Children diagnosed with Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (0.2% of live births) are often treated by splintage to hold the head of the femur in the acetabulum during early joint development. Whilst clinically effective, this can create difficulties for the parents in handling the child and affects the mobility of the family, which subsequently creates emotional and social difficulty resulting from the disruption of the family routine. To identify these problems and their order of priority, a survey of 113 recently affected families was carried out in England and Northern Ireland. Parents iden

A pilot randomized controlled trial of a cognitive-behavioral therapy guided self-help mobile app for the post-acute treatment of anorexia nervosa: A registered report.

INTRODUCTION: Relapse following acute treatment for anorexia nervosa (AN) is common. Evidence suggests cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) may be useful in the post-acute period, but few patients have access to trained providers. mHealth technologies have potential to increase access to high-quality care for AN, including in the post-acute period. The aim of this study is to estimate the preliminary feasibility and effectiveness of a CBT-based mobile intervention plus treatment as usual (TAU), offered with and without an accompanying social networking feature. METHOD: In the current pilot rand

"Why would I want to go out?": Age-related Vision Loss and Social Participation.

Social participation, a key determinant of healthy aging, is often negatively impacted by age-related vision loss (ARVL). This grounded theory study aimed to understand social participation as a process negotiated in everyday life by older adults with ARVL. Interviews, audio diaries, and life space maps were used to collect data with 21 older adults in two Ontario cities. Inductive data analysis resulted in a transactional model of the process of negotiating social participation in context. This model depicts how environmental features and resources, skills and abilities, and risks and vulnera

Gender Differences in Mobility Device Use Among U.S. Older Adults.

OBJECTIVES: Research has shown greater mobility limitations among women than men. We aimed to examine (a) gender differences in the use of canes for mobility and (b) what factors contribute to these differences under the frameworks of the disablement model and the Theory of Planned Behavior. METHOD: Using National Health and Aging Trends Study data, we estimated hierarchical logistic regression models to predict the likelihood of cane use among older adults who completed performance-based measures (n = 5,503). We tested the interactions between gender and selected variables to further underst
