Social behaviour and susceptibility to infection in house mice (Mus musculus): effects of group size, aggressive behaviour and status-related hormonal responses prior to infection on resistance to Babesia microti.

Associations between social rank, immunodepression and resistance to Babesia microti infection within single-sex groups of male house mice suggest rank-dependent suites of response involving different hormonal and immune changes in relation to aggressive behaviour and group size prior to infection. Reduced resistance among high-ranking males was associated with increased serum testosterone and corticosterone concentration and reduced serum immunoglobulin, but was independent of group size. Among low-ranking males, hormonal changes were not associated with resistance to B. microti but changes i

Social networks as a protective factor for worsened self-perceived health status related to self-perceived changes in loneliness and health conditions in adults aged 50+ during the COVID-19 outbreak.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has emerged as a global pandemic, leading millions of people to change their lifestyles, especially older individuals who are the most at-risk population. Social isolation, the main preventive action to slow the pandemic's spread, reduced and drastically limited social connections, increasing older individuals' loneliness and stress, and worsening their health. We examined the connection between self-perceived changes in loneliness, the existence and type of social contact (face-to-face/electronic), and health conditions on self-perceived changes in heal

Health-related quality of life in Turkish patients with ankylosing spondylitis: impact of peripheral involvement on quality of life in terms of disease activity, functional status, severity of pain, and social and emotional functioning.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) affects sacroiliac joints at early stages and may involve the axial skeleton at later stages of disease. Peripheral involvement usually occurs in lower extremities. When it develops early in the disease course, it is a predictor of more aggressive disease. The aim of this study is to evaluate health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in AS and to assess the impact of peripheral involvement on HRQoL domains in terms of disease activity, functional status, pain, and social and emotional functioning. Seventy-four AS patients were included. Peripheral involvement was prese

Report of the Psychosocial Outcomes Workgroup of the Nursing and Social Sciences Council of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation: present status of research on psychosocial outcomes in cardiothoracic transplantation: review and recommendations for the field.

Cardiothoracic transplantation's success at prolonging life--and its economic costs--must be considered relative to its psychosocial benefits and costs. Moreover, psychosocial outcomes themselves influence long-term post-transplant morbidity and mortality rates. Although psychosocial outcomes--encompassing patients' physical, psychologic and social functioning, their management of their medical regimen and global quality of life--are the focus of many recent studies, these investigations have yet to yield many evidence-based interventions that are routinely applied to improve patient outcomes.

[Health status, social networks and support systems of elderly men and women in a large city and in former coal-mining areas--a population-based comparative study of 70-year-old residents of Sapporo and Yubari].

In order to analyze the different features of the social network, social support system and health status of elderly people, a survey was performed of the social environment and health related issues among 70 year-old men and women in Sapporo, a large city, and Yubari, a small city which has experienced coal mine closures, both in Hokkaido prefecture. The results were as follows: 1. In Yubari, the health status of the elderly living alone was better than those with other familial categories such as living with their spouse, or with the families of their children. In contrast, the status of the

How to modify expectations of social rejection? An experimental study using a false-feedback paradigm.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Negative expectations (NEs) are fundamental to various mental disorders. Finding ways to modulate NEs would help to improve clinical treatment. The present study investigated how previously formed expectations of social rejection are revised in the context of novel positive social experiences, and whether their revision can be modulated by differentially shifting participants' attentional focus. METHODS: Our sample of 124 healthy participants was randomly assigned to four experimental conditions and received manipulated social feedback in multiple alleged webcam con

Early-life impairments, chronic health conditions, and income mobility.

Individuals who have congenital conditions or become disabled early in life tend to have poorer educational and occupational outcomes than non-disabled individuals. Disability is known to be a complex entity with multiple causations, involving, inter alia, physiological, social, economic, and cultural factors. It is established that social factors can influence educational and occupational attainment for disabled people, and current disability policy in many countries, particularly in the Global North, stress the importance of equality of opportunity. However, there is a scarcity of research t

Social Group Differences in Influencing Factors for Chinese Urban Residents' Subjective Well-Being: From the Perspective of Social Stratification.

With the great pressure of modern social life, the problem of residents' subjective well-being has attracted scholars' attention. Against the background of institutional transformation, China has a special social stratification structure. The socio-economic resources and living needs of different social classes are different, resulting in differences in the level of subjective well-being and the influencing factors for this. Taking Guangzhou as an example, based on the data of a household survey conducted in 2016, this paper obtains the social hierarchical structure through two-step clustering

Measuring online and offline social rejection sensitivity in the digital age.

Social rejection sensitivity has been proposed as a central risk factor for depression. Yet, its assessment has typically been limited to offline contexts. Many of today's social interactions, however, take place online. Here, we developed a measure to assess social rejection sensitivity in both online and offline environments. Across four separate samples including a total of 2381 individuals (12-89 years), the Online and Offline Social Sensitivity Scale was shown to offer a reliable measure of social rejection sensitivity. The study provides evidence that rejection sensitivity across online
