Targeted Recruitment of Cross-Kingdom Phosphate-Solubilizing Microbes Drives Asymmetric Rhizosphere Responses Between Solanum rostratum and Cenchrus pauciflorus Benth. in Sandy Habitats.

In resource-poor sandy habitats, alien plant co-invasion often triggers intense belowground competition mediated by rhizosphere microorganisms. However, the mechanisms by which these plants overcome nutrient limitations remain unclear. Here, we conducted an eight-month in situ monitoring of single- and co-invasion plots of Solanum rostratum and Cenchrus pauciflorus Benth. in the Horqin Sandy Land. By integrating soil enzyme assays with 16S rRNA and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) amplicon sequencing, we characterized their rhizosphere microbial community assembly. Co-invasion exposed both sp…

Rhizosphere-driven integrated management of Meloidogyne incognita in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) using Arthrobotrys oligospora and salicylic acid through enhanced plant defense responses.

Root knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) is a major group of plant-parasitic nematode that severely reduce crop productivity by hijacking host root resources. Environmental and toxicological risks associated with chemical nematicides drive the need of eco-friendly management strategies. Therefore, a greenhouse experiment was conducted to assess the single/joint suppressive effects of Arthrobotrys oligospora and salicylic acid (SA) in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) plants infected with Meloidogyne incognita. Compared to single treatment, combined (A. oligospora + SA) application exhibited pronounc…

Tomato MYB transcription factor family gene SlMYB108 is involved in Trichoderma harzianum-induced resistance to root-knot nematodes in Solanum lycopersicum L.

Root-knot nematode (RKN) infestation is a major threat to global agriculture, causing substantial damage to economically important crops such as tomatoes. Trichoderma species are promising biocontrol agents that can enhance plant growth, improve nutrient uptake, and induce systemic resistance against various pathogens, including RKNs. The R2R3-MYB transcription factor family plays a key role in plant secondary metabolism and defense mechanisms against biotic stressors. However, the specific role of tomato MYB108 in mediating resistance against RKNs remains underexplored. In this study, we foun

Curdlan β-1,3-glucooligosaccharides induce the defense responses against Phytophthora infestans infection of potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. McCain G1) leaf cells.

Activation of the innate immune system before the invasion of pathogens is a promising way to improve the resistance of plant against infection while reducing the use of agricultural chemicals. Although several elicitors were used to induce the resistance of potato plant to microbial pathogen infection, the role of curdlan oligosaccharide (CurdO) has not been established. In the current study, the defense responses were investigated at biochemical and proteomic levels to elucidate the elicitation effect of CurdOs in foliar tissues of potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. McCain G1). The results ind…

Aqueous Extract of Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) and Ferulic Acid Reduce the Expression of TNF-α and IL-1β in LPS-Activated Macrophages.

Acute inflammation is essential for defending the body against pathogens; however, when inflammation becomes chronic, it is harmful to the body and is part of the pathophysiology of various diseases such as Diabetes Mellitus type 2 (DM2) and Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) among others. In chronic inflammation macrophages play an important role, mainly through the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines such as Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and Interleukin (IL)-1β, explained in part by activation of the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), a signaling pathway which culminates in the activation of Nuclear

From dormancy to germination: Transcriptome analysis reveals the potential involvement of heat shock proteins in gibberellin-induced seed dormancy release in Solanum torvum.

Solanum torvum, a superior vegetable grafting rootstock and medicinal Solanaceae plant, exhibits strong seed dormancy, which limits its commercial cultivation. Among various strategies explored to improve the germination rate of S. torvum, exogenous application of gibberellin (GA) has been shown to be effective. In this study, a GA concentration of 2.5 mM was established as the optimal for breaking dormancy in S. torvum seeds. Transcriptome analysis of dry, water-soaked, GA-soaked, and GA-induced germinated seeds was conducted to investigate the molecular mechanism of GA-mediated dormancy rele…

Bittersweet dynamics from flowers to fruits: chemometric molecular networking reveals metabolic changes towards reduced toxicity over ontogeny in above-ground Solanum dulcamara chemotypes.

Poisonous plants frequently deploy toxic metabolites in an organ- and ontogenetic-specific manner, yet the developmental dynamics of these plant specialised metabolites remain poorly understood. In the Solanaceae, steroidal glycosides (SGs), including steroidal glycoalkaloids (SGAs) and steroidal saponin glycosides (SSGs), are major defence metabolites with potent ecological and pharmacological activities. Here, we investigated how their metabolic profiles are reorganised during flower and fruit development in Solanum dulcamara using untargeted metabolomics and chemometric molecular networking…
