[Mathematic model of the cupuloendolymphatic system for various densities of cupula and endolymph].

This paper presents a mathematical model of time-course variations of the cupulo-endolymphatic system which can be described by the Steinhauzen phenomenological equation for the case of a unidimensional toroid, assuming that the densities of the cupula and endolymph are identical. If the densities are different, the time-course variations of the cupuloendolymphatic system may aggravate and manifest at the powered stages of space flight.

[Effectiveness of the preparation Gavinton in preventing motion sickness].

The effectiveness of the Hungarian drug kavinton used to prevent motion sickness was assessed. During the study 8 motion sickness susceptible test subjects were kept in a chamber rotating at a rate of 6 rpm for 5 hours. The effectiveness of the drug taken regularly during the exposure was compared with that of scopolamine and placebo taken as a single dose. The results obtained are suggestive of a positive effect of kavinton as an antimotion drug.

Sopite syndrome: a sometimes sole manifestation of motion sickness.

Drowsiness is one of the cardinal symptoms of motion sickness; therefore, a symptom-complex centering around "drowsiness" has been identified which, for convenience, has been termed the sopite syndrome. Generally, the symptoms characterizing this syndrome are interwoven with other symptoms but under two circumstances the sopite syndrome comprises the main or sole overt manifestation of motion sickness. One circumstance is that in which the intensity of the eliciting stimuli is closely matched to a person's susceptibility, and the sopite syndrome is evoked either before other symptoms of motion

"Critical periods" in vestibular development or adaptation of gravity sensory systems to altered gravitational conditions?

1. A feature of sensory, neuronal and motor systems is the existence of a critical period during their development. Modification of environmental conditions during this specific period of life affects development in a long-term manner, or even irreversibly. Deprivation is the prefered approach to study the existence and duration of critical periods. For gravity sensory systems, space flights offer the only opportunity for deprivation conditions. 2. Studies in a fish (Oreochromis mossambicus) and an amphibian (Xenopus laevis) revealed a significant sensitivity of their roll-induced static vesti

Sensorimotor recovery following spaceflight may be due to frequent square-wave saccadic intrusions.

Square-wave jerks (SWJs) are small, involuntary saccades that disrupt steady fixation. We report the case of an astronaut (approximately 140 d on orbit) who showed frequent SWJs, especially postflight, but who showed no impairment of vision or decrement of postflight performance. These data support the view that SWJs do not impair vision because they are paired movements, consisting of a small saccade away from the fixation position followed, within 200 ms, by a corrective saccade that brings the eye back on target. Since many returning astronauts show a decrement of dynamic visual function du

Tolerance to extended galvanic vestibular stimulation: optimal exposure for astronaut training.

BACKGROUND: We have developed an analogue of postflight sensorimotor dysfunction in astronauts using pseudorandom galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS). To date there has been no study of the effects of extended GVS on human subjects and our aim was to determine optimal exposure for astronaut training based on tolerance to intermittent and continuous galvanic stimulation. METHODS: There were 60 subjects who were exposed to a total of 10.5 min of intermittent GVS at a peak current of 3.5 mA or 5 mA. A subset of 24 subjects who tolerated the intermittent stimulus were subsequently exposed to 20

Influence of hypergravity on fish inner ear otoliths: II. Incorporation of calcium and kinetotic behaviour.

Larval siblings of cichlid fish (Oreochromis mossambicus) were subjected to hypergravity (hg; 3 g, 14 days) during development. Following the transfer to 1 g (i.e., stopping the centrifuge) they were separated into normally and kinetotically swimming individuals (the latter performed spinning movements). During hg, the animals were maintained in aquarium water containing alizarin-complexone (AC), a fluorescent calcium tracer. Densitometric measurements of AC uptake into inner ear otoliths (optical density of AC/micrometers2) revealed that the kinetotic individuals had incorporated significantl

Control of simulator sickness in an AH-64 aviator.

An active 33-year-old Army AH-64 aviator with simulator sickness refractory to routine preventive measures was successfully managed with transdermal scopolamine. Although adaptation is the ultimate means for control of simulator sickness, the use of anti-motion sickness medication, specifically transdermal scopolamine, may be a useful adjuvant in selected aviators.

Susceptibility to motion sickness in fish: a parabolic aircraft flight study.

Juvenile swordtail fish and larval cichlids were subjected to parabolic aircraft flights (PAFs) and individually observed. After the PAFs, inner ear otoliths and sensory epithelia were examined on the light microscopical level. Otolith asymmetry (differences in otolith size between the left and the right side) was especially pronounced in those fish, who exhibited a kinetotic behaviour (e.g., spinning movements) during microgravity. This speaks in favour of a theoretical concept according to which susceptibility to space motion sickness in humans may be based on asymmetric inner ear stones. Th…

Neurobiological responses of fish to altered gravity conditions: a review.

In vertebrates (including man), altered gravitational environments such as weightlessness can induce malfunctions of the inner ears, based on an irregular dislocation of the inner ear otoliths from the corresponding sensory epithelia. This dislocation leads to an illusionary tilt, since the otolithic inputs are not confirmed by the other sensory organs, which results in an intersensory conflict. Vertebrates in the orbit therefore face severe orientation problems. In humans, the intersensory conflict may additionally lead to a malaise, commonly referred to as space motion sickness (SMS). During…

Touch down: the effect of artificial touch cues on orientation in microgravity.

Orienting oneself in space is not an easy task. On Earth, we combine visual, vestibular and pressure cues into a coherent concept of up and down. Since there are no cues from gravity in space, astronauts have to adjust the way they determine up from down, with the possible risk of space motion sickness. In three tasks performed by one astronaut in the International Space Station (ISS), we examined the effect of artificial touch cues presented to the torso. The role of "natural" touch cues on spatial orientation in microgravity, such as pressure presented to the sole of the feet, has already be…

Scent in Motion: On the Multiple Uses of Ambient Scent in the Context of Passenger Transport.

There is undoubtedly growing interest in the role of scent in the design of multisensory experiences. However, to date, the majority of the research has focused on its use in the (static) built environment. As highlighted by this narrative review, somewhat different challenges and opportunities arise just as soon as one starts to consider olfaction in the case of transportation-what might be called "scent in motion." For instance, levels of anxiety/stress while traveling are often higher (especially in the case of air travel), while, at the same time, the passenger's personal space is frequent

Astronauts eye-head coordination dysfunction over the course of twenty space shuttle flights.

BACKGROUND: Coordination of motor activity is adapted to Earth's gravity (1 g). However, during space flight the gravity level changes from Earth gravity to hypergravity during launch, and to microgravity (0 g) in orbit. This transition between gravity levels may alter the coordination between eye and head movements in gaze performance. OBJECTIVE: We explored how weightlessness during space flight altered the astronauts' eye-head coordination (EHC) with respect to flight day and target eccentricity. METHODS: Thirty-four astronauts of 20 Space Shuttle missions had to acquire visual targets wi

Fluid volume control during short-term space flight and implications for human performance.

Space flight exerts substantial effects on fluid volume control in humans. Cardiac distension occurs during the first 1-2 days of space flight relative to supine and especially upright 1g conditions. Plasma volume contraction occurs quickly in microgravity, probably as a result of transcapillary fluid filtration into upper-body interstitial spaces. No natriuresis or diuresis has been observed in microgravity, such that diuresis cannot explain microgravity-induced hypovolemia. Reduction of fluid intake occurs irrespective of space motion sickness and leads to hypovolemia. The fourfold elevation…

Diuretic as a means for rapid adaptation to weightlessness.

In a number of flights, cosmonauts and astronauts have experienced aggravation of their health status and general condition in the initial hours and days in a weightless environment. One of the trigger mechanisms for the onset of these unfavourable conditions at the start of space flight is a redistribution of body fluids and a blood shift towards the head. To ensure controlled hypohydration as a countermeasure to the deleterious effects of 0-g and to investigate the feasibility to control adaptation, six cosmonauts were administered lasix once a day during the first 3 days of a mission. All d
