A survey of interventions used by speech-language pathologists for children with speech sound disorders in the Middle East.

PURPOSE: While many examples of speech pathology intervention approaches for children with speech sound disorders (SSDs) exist in English and some other European languages, approaches with children in other languages are largely unknown. The aim was to determine current speech-language pathologists (SLPs) intervention practices with children with SSDs in the ME, and to then compare these with international practices. METHODS: Data were collected by online questionnaire using Qualtrics. One hundred and eighty-nine SLPs completed the survey. Participants were required to be Arabic first languag

Speech pathology & Parkinson's disease in the home environment.

Those with Parkinson's Disease often suffer speech limitations distinct from other neurological diseases and stroke. Symptoms of dysarthria, the clinical term of impaired, uncoordinated, and weakened speech musculature, include reduced volume, breathiness, monotone pitch, accelerated rate of speech, and inability to communicate effectively over the telephone, in groups, and even in quiet one-to-one settings. The author discusses the voice, speech, and related deficits encountered by individuals with Parkinson's Disease and the speech-language pathologist's role in addressing these deficits.

Linguistic and non-linguistic prosodic skills in Spanish children with developmental dyslexia.

BACKGROUND: The deficit on segmental phonology in developmental dyslexia is well established and according to recent studies this deficit extends to suprasegmental phonology or prosody. However, these studies have focused on word-level prosody. Further research is needed concerning prosodic deficit in dyslexia, especially with a Spanish-speaking population. AIMS: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of linguistic (word and phrase-level) and non-linguistic prosodic skills in Spanish children with developmental dyslexia. METHOD AND PROCEDURE: 48 Spanish children (8-9 years of age)

Morphemes matter: A small scale randomised control trial of vocabulary intervention focusing on affixes for adolescents with (developmental) language disorder.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether morphological intervention improves understanding of affixes in adolescents with a language disorder and whether progress generalises. METHOD: A total of 25 adolescents aged 13-15 years participated in this single-blind trial with random allocation. All participants had a language disorder; 18 with developmental language disorder, four with associated genetic conditions, and three with autism. A total of 11 participants received twice-weekly morphological intervention for 30 min with a speech-language pathologist for 8 weeks, while 14 received intervention as u

Exploring Concepts of Understanding in the Working Practice of Speech and Language Therapists in the UK: A Preliminary Survey.

BACKGROUND: All communication involves the expression and the reception of information, both of which are considered by speech and language therapists (SLTs) when assessing and planning intervention for language difficulties. Comprehension, or understanding, has to be inferred, whereas expressive behaviours are directly observable. Possibly because of the level of inference, views and assessments of a person's understanding often vary: between different practitioners, professionals, family members and carers. The aim of the research was to examine how and why such different perspectives occur

Intervention Techniques Targeting Echolalia: A Scoping Review.

PURPOSE: Although echolalic speech is found in typical development, echolalia is most commonly associated with autism. As such, echolalia has frequently been the focus of various interventions aimed at autistic children. Recent research and the voices of autistic self-advocates indicate that echolalia serves as a meaningful form of communication or functionally supports self-regulation. As a result, the literature on how, or whether, to target echolalia in therapy is full of philosophically diverse approaches. To support evidence-based practice, the purpose of this scoping review was to inform

The provision of speech-language therapy in services destined to individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The increased prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) worldwide has been a major public health concern; therefore, discussion about the services and therapies required has become important. This study aimed to characterize the provision of speech-language therapy services in the metropolitan area of Sao Paulo. To this end, a questionnaire with 23 questions was developed based on the Balanced Scorecard methodology. This questionnaire was applied to 854 individuals assisted in 25 ASD services. The results show that only 64% of the ASD services offer speech-language therapy and that the numb

Primary progressive aphasia and apraxia of speech.

Primary progressive aphasia is a neurodegenerative syndrome characterized by progressive language dysfunction. The majority of primary progressive aphasia cases can be classified into three subtypes: nonfluent/agrammatic, semantic, and logopenic variants. Each variant presents with unique clinical features, and is associated with distinctive underlying pathology and neuroimaging findings. Unlike primary progressive aphasia, apraxia of speech is a disorder that involves inaccurate production of sounds secondary to impaired planning or programming of speech movements. Primary progressive apraxia

The Effect of Hand Gesture Cues Within the Treatment of /r/ for a College-Aged Adult With Persisting Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

PURPOSE: Despite the widespread use of hand movements as visual and kinesthetic cues to facilitate accurate speech produced by individuals with speech sound disorders (SSDs), no experimental investigation of gestural cues that mimic that spatiotemporal parameters of speech sounds (e.g., holding fingers and thumb together and "popping" them to cue /p/) currently exists. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of manual mimicry cues within a multisensory intervention of persisting childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Cleft Lip/Palate Speech: Optimizing Speech Outcomes With Limited Speech Pathology Resources.

Children born with cleft palate, with or without cleft lip (CP ± L), are at high risk for speech and resonance disorders that can significantly impact communication and quality of life. Causes of cleft-related speech disorders include velopharyngeal insufficiency, malocclusion, dental anomalies, and airway obstruction. Accurate differential diagnosis is critical, as mismanagement can result in unnecessary surgery or ineffective therapy. Nonetheless, many children do not receive specialist evaluation or targeted intervention. Optimal outcomes require coordinated multidisciplinary care, with spe

Improving Speech Outcomes in Low- and Middle-Income Countries for Patients Born with Cleft Palate.

This article reviews the research and current practices aimed at building cleft speech therapy capacity in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), given the paucity of qualified speech-language pathologists with cleft palate expertise. The importance of a successful initial palate repair is emphasized, as well as the more specialized training and skills needed for speech clinicians working with patients requiring secondary procedures. Intensive short-term cleft speech clinics (ISSCs), which incorporate both didactic learning and hands-on clinical experiences, are introduced. Outcomes, advant

Clinical Reasoning for Speech Sound Disorders: Diagnosis and Intervention in Speech-Language Pathologists' Daily Practice.

Purpose This study aims to give an insight in clinical reasoning (diagnosis and intervention) of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in the Netherlands for children with speech sound disorder (SSD). Method The study featured a mixed-method (qualitative and quantitative) design. Semistructured interviews containing nondirective, open-ended questions were conducted with 33 SLPs, which were analyzed using a constant comparative analysis. Other SLPs (137) filled out a questionnaire on the same topics. Multiple-choice questions were analyzed by descriptive frequencies, while open-ended questions we

Towards a consensus on the definition and nature of meta-therapy in voice therapy: Current state and future directions.

PURPOSE: Meta-therapy is the nuanced relational dialogue employed by clinicians to facilitate effective and efficient behavioural change. Introduced within the context of voice therapy and recently applied in other domains of speech-language pathology, meta-therapy continues to evolve conceptually. This article presents a preliminary effort towards consensus-building about meta-therapy. METHOD: A structured expert consensus development process was conducted with voice-specialised speech-language pathologists using elements of a modified Nominal Group Technique and developmental pre-Delphi con…
