BACKGROUND: Hybrid peripheral nerve sheath tumors (HPNSTs) are rare benign neoplasms characterized by the coexistence of multiple peripheral nerve sheath lineages, most commonly schwannoma, neurofibroma, and perineurioma. Although increasingly recognized as a distinct pathological entity, spinal involvement remains exceedingly uncommon, posing diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines using PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science from database inception to April 2026. Studies reporting histologically confirmed primary spi

The fifth edition of the World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Tumours of the Central Nervous System (WHO CNS5) introduces a revised framework for classifying brain and spinal cord tumours, emphasizing the crucial role of molecular diagnostics in accurately identifying neoplasms. A key advancement in this edition is the clear distinction between paediatric-type diffuse low-grade gliomas (pDLGGs) and paediatric-type diffuse high-grade gliomas (pDHGGs) as separate tumour entities. Although histologically and morphologically similar, paediatric diffuse gliomas differ significantly fro

Leptomeningeal gliomatosis (LG) is characterized by extensive dissemination of neoplastic glial cells in the subarachnoid space either without an intraparenchymal glioma (primary LG or PLG) or secondary to an intraparenchymal glioma (secondary LG or SLG). Given the low frequency of LG in human and veterinary medicine, specific diagnostic criteria are lacking. Here, we describe 14 cases of canine LG that were retrospectively identified from 6 academic institutions. The mean age of affected dogs was 7.3 years and over 90% of patients were brachycephalic. Clinical signs were variable and progress

This case study examines the rehabilitation strategy for a 51-year-old farmer with primary neoplasm of the central nervous system (CNS)-related hemiparesis, balance issues, and cognitive impairment. Primary neoplasm of the CNS is a rare type of cancer that affects the brain, spinal cord, and other parts of the CNS. Hemiparesis, which is weakness on one side of the body, is a common symptom of primary neoplasm of the CNS. The tumour can cause inflammation and swelling in the brain, which can further contribute to weakness. Symptoms include headaches, confusion, seizures, and changes in vision o

OBJECTIVE: The rate of dorsal column deficit after intramedullary spine tumor resection remains unknown. In a cohort of patients undergoing posterior intramedullary spinal tumor resection, the authors sought to 1) report the rate of dorsal column deficits, 2) report the rate of new motor deficits, and 3) determine risk factors and recovery characteristics for both deficits.
METHODS: A single-institution, retrospective cohort study of patients undergoing posterior intramedullary spinal cord tumor resection was performed from 2010 to 2020. Primary and metastatic cord tumors were included; cauda

BACKGROUND: Hemangioblastomas (HBLs) are relatively uncommon tumors of uncertain histogenesis usually located in the cerebellum or spinal cord. Much less frequently they are identified in extramedullary locations including the filum terminale, proximal nerve roots, or even distal nerves of the peripheral nervous system (PNS). PNS cases not only present diagnostic challenges but also raise interesting questions regarding the common cell of origin for these CNS and PNS neoplasms. Few studies have detailed the neuroimaging characteristics of the rare extramedullary variants.
METHODS: Neuroimagin

Solitary fibrous tumours (SFTs) are rare WHO grade I mesenchymal neoplasms that were first described in the visceral pleura. A wide variety of locations of SFT have been reported but only twelve cases of intramedullary solitary fibrous tumour. We report a case of thoracic spinal cord SFT. A 49-year-old woman presented with clinical signs of dorsal myelopathy. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an intradural mass at level T9-T10 which showed imaging features consistent both for an intra- and an extramedullary location of a solid tumour. Imaging findings were confirmed during surgery which was

An autopsy case of leptomeningeal melanomatosis associated with neurocutaneous melanosis (NCM) involving a 44-year-old male is reported. The autopsy showed that the leptomeningeal surface of the brain and the spinal cord were covered with a diffuse black lesion. A histological examination detected diffusely distributed, proliferating, melanin-containing cells and demonstrated that the lesion consisted of three different components; i.e. regions of melanomatosis, melanocytosis, and melanocyte hyperplasia. In the leptomeningeal melanomatosis component, tumor cells with pleomorphic nuclei and pro

BACKGROUND: For patients with acute paraplegia caused by spinal giant cell tumor (GCT) who require emergency decompressive surgery, there is still a lack of relevant reports on surgical options. This study is the first to present the case of an acute paraplegic patient with a thoracic spinal GCT who underwent an emergency total en bloc spondylectomy (TES). Despite tumor recurrence, three-level TES was repeated after denosumab therapy.
CASE SUMMARY: A 27-year-old female patient who underwent single-level TES in an emergency presented with sudden severe back pain and acute paraplegia due to a t

Spinal cord or cauda equina compression from prostatic cancer is an oncologic emergency necessitating prompt evaluation and treatment. The strong correlation between pretreatment motor status and treatment outcome underscores the importance of immediate treatment before further neurologic deterioration and before the damage to the spinal cord becomes permanent. Patients with known osseous metastases should be alerted by their clinicians to seek medical help within hours should they develop weakness in an extremity. Prompt MRI of the entire spine should be done prior to treatment. Myelography s

It was found that in patients with spinal and cerebrospinal lesions considerable circulatory disorders occur that are depended on the character of the disease and related homeostasis disturbances. As evidenced by the authors' findings the main causes of circulatory disturbances may be as follows: altered innervation below the focus of cerebrospinal lesion, the development of insufficiency of the myocardiac contractility, a changed general vascular resistance, a decrease of total circulatory volume.

Paraneoplastic neurological disorders (PNDs) are heterogeneous clinicopathologic syndromes that occur throughout the neuraxis resulting from damage to organs or tissues remote from the site of a malignant neoplasm or its metastases. The discordance between severe neurological disability and even an indolent malignancy suggests an underlying neuroimmunologic host immune response that inflicts nervous tissue damage while inhibiting malignant tumor growth. Motor system involvement, like other symptoms and signs, is associated with focal or diffuse involvement of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral

Myxopapillary ependymoma (MPE) is a rare type of central nervous system neoplasm mostly located in the cauda equina and filum terminale regions. A previously healthy 22-year-old Chinese man presented with the first case of MPE in the third ventricle area and sacral canal initially manifesting as spinal cord compression. The patient was admitted with pain in the right lower extremity for 5 months and encopresis for 3 months. Magnetic resonance imaging of the lumbar spine revealed an intradural lesion at the S2 level. The patient accordingly underwent lumbar laminectomy surgery and gross total r

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are uncommon mesenchymal lesions originally described as pleura-based neoplasms. Intradural juxtamedullary SFTs are rare, hard, and scarcely vascularized and generally present a conspicuous extramedullary exophytic component without dural attachment and nerve root involvement. Gross-total resection is the mainstay of treatment, although the absence of an arachnoidal plane and the firm adherence to the spinal cord make resection challenging. We describe the case of a 74-yr-old female patient presenting with a history of progressive spastic tetraparesis due to a c

BACKGROUND: Primary melanocytic neoplasms of the central nervous system are rare lesions arising from melanocytes of the leptomeninge that are found at highest density underneath the brain stem and along the upper cervical spinal cord. Thus most reported cases of meningeal melanocytomas are located in the posterior fossa and the spinal cord, and presentation of a supratentorial tumor is rare.
METHODS: A 19-year-old man presented with a headache and seizure at our department. Neurological examinations were otherwise normal. On physical examination he had asymptomatic, bluish, speckled, and wel

Meningioangiomatosis (MA) is a rare proliferative meningovascular disorder that affects mainly the cerebral cortex, brainstem and spinal cord of humans and animals and can coexist with other proliferative disorders. A 7.5-year-old male Brazilian Campeiro Bulldog died after a convulsive crisis and cardiorespiratory arrest. At necropsy, a firm, white mass involving the piriform and right occipital lobes was seen. Histologically, the mass consisted of two morphologically distinct entities that collided: a congenital malformation characterized by a proliferation of meningothelial cells around bloo

A 75-year-old female patient, nonsmoker was addressed to our institution for a fracture of C5 vertebra with spinal cord compression by a tumor mass invading surrounding soft tissue. She had a previous history of breast ductal carcinoma and endometrioid carcinoma. Biopsy of the tumor mass showed a TTF-1-positive carcinoma. Molecular study showed a E545K mutation of PIK3CA. Lung imaging showed multiple nodules evocative of metastasis rather than a primitive tumor. Reviewing of slides of endometrioid carcinoma showed areas positive for TTF1, and the same E545K mutation was found in endometrial tu
