BACKGROUND: Complex motor stereotypies (CMS) are repetitive movements classified into "primary" for typically developing individuals and "secondary" for those with other neurological or neurodevelopmental disorders. This study evaluated children diagnosed with primary CMS to assess motor stereotypy outcomes, sex-related differences, and early neurodevelopmental histories that play a key role in diagnostic classification.
METHODS: Sixty-five healthy participants diagnosed with pCMS (44 males, 21 females), mean age 9.1 ± 3.6 years (range 3-17 years), completed follow-up telephone interviews and

Bobble-head doll syndrome is a rare movement disorder that is usually associated with lesions involving the third ventricle. It is characterised by stereotypical rhythmic up-and-down or side-to-side head movements. The pathophysiology and anatomical basis for this unusual manifestation is still a subject of intense scrutiny. The syndrome has never been described in a patient with both hydranencephaly and Chiari type 3 malformation. We describe a 2-year-old female patient who presented with congenital hydrocephalus, an occipital encephalocele and rhythmic bobbling of the head. Imaging investiga

The main usefulness of video electroencephalographic (video-EEG) monitoring lies in the fact that it allows proper classification of the type of epileptic seizure and epileptic syndrome, identification of minor seizures, location of the epileptogenic zone and differentiation between epileptic seizures and non-epileptic paroxysmal manifestations (NEPM). In infants and pre-school age children, the clinical signs with which epileptic seizures are expressed differ to those of older children, seizures with bilateral motor signs such as epileptic spasms, tonic and myoclonic seizures predominate, and

Handball is a high-intensity contact sports activity characterized by repetitive movements, leading to sport-specific muscle patterns. However, at some stage, this pattern may turn into imbalance, predisposing athletes for injuries. The complexity of muscular interactions often makes it difficult to see a whole picture of an athlete's postural disorders and assess them within the framework of his stereotyped movements. We attempted to find an association between the muscle pattern and the number of injuries in a limited group of handball players by constructing a static logistical model. The c

Numerous genetic syndromes that include intellectual disability (ID) have been reported. Recently, HECW2 mutations were detected in patients with ID and growth development disorders. Four de novo missense mutations have been reported. Here, we report a Japanese girl with Rett-like symptoms of severe ID, hypotonia, refractory epilepsy, and stereotypical hand movement (hand tapping, flapping, and wringing) after the age of 1 year. Characteristically, she had cortical visual impairment. She had difficulty swallowing since the age of 4 years, and diminished activity was noticeable since the age of

BACKGROUND: GNAO1 encephalopathy is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by distinct movement presentations and early onset epileptic encephalopathy. Here, we report the in-depth phenotyping of genetically confirmed patients with GNAO1 encephalopathy, focusing on movement presentations.
RESULTS: Six patients who participated in Korean Undiagnosed Disease Program were diagnosed to have pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants in GNAO1 using whole exome sequencing. All medical records and personal video clips were analyzed with a literature review. Three of the 6 patients were male.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is mostly diagnosed according to behavioral symptoms in sensory, social, and motor domains. Improper motor functioning, during diagnosis, involves the qualitative evaluation of stereotyped and repetitive behaviors, while quantitative methods that classify body movements' frequencies of children with ASD are less addressed. Recent advances in neuroscience, technology, and data analysis techniques are improving the quantitative and ecological validity methods to measure specific functioning in ASD children. On one side, cutting-edge technologies, such as cameras, s

Genital manifestations in pediatric epilepsy are rare and may be misinterpreted as behavioral disorders, particularly gratification disorder, resulting in delayed diagnosis. We report a 10-year-old girl with normal psychomotor development and no significant medical history, presenting since the age of 3 years with recurrent stereotyped episodes initially considered as a gratification disorder. On reevaluation, she described paroxysmal genital tingling associated with a sensation of pleasure, occasionally accompanied by unexplained vaginal discharge, followed by involuntary pelvic movements cha

'Stereotyped or repetitive motor movements' are characterised as core features in the diagnosis of autism, yet many autistic adults (and the neurodiversity movement) have reclaimed them as 'stimming'. Supported by a growing body of scientific research, autistic adults argue that these behaviours may serve as useful coping mechanisms, yet little research has examined stimming from the perspective of autistic adults. Through interviews and focus groups, we asked 32 autistic adults to share their perceptions and experiences of stimming, including the reasons they stim, any value doing so may hold

A precise sequence of axon guidance events is required for the development of the ocular motor system. Three cranial nerves grow toward, and connect with, six extraocular muscles in a stereotyped pattern, to control eye movements. The signaling protein alpha2-chimaerin (α2-CHN) plays a pivotal role in the formation of the ocular motor system; mutations in CHN1, encoding α2-CHN, cause the human eye movement disorder Duane Retraction Syndrome (DRS). Our research has demonstrated that the manipulation of α2-chn signaling in the zebrafish embryo leads to ocular motor axon wiring defects, although

This article addresses the question of how body-focused repetitive behavior disorders (e.g., trichotillomania and skin-picking disorder) should be characterized in ICD-11. The article reviews the historical nosology of the two disorders and the current approaches in DSM-5 and ICD-10. Although data are limited and mixed regarding the optimal relationship between body-focused repetitive behavior disorders and nosological categories, these conditions should be included within the obsessive-compulsive and related disorders category, as this is how most clinicians see these behaviors, and as this m

Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by chronic tics (i.e., repetitive and stereotyped movements and vocalizations) and premonitory urges (i.e., aversive sensations preceding tics that are alleviated once a tic is performed). Research supports that dysfunctional neurobiological and psychological processes interact and contribute to the development and maintenance of tics. However, psychological theories of Tourette syndrome and accompanying research have mainly focused on the emotional states (e.g., anxiety and frustration) and behavioural principles (i.e., operant

Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is an inborn error of metabolism caused by defects in the branched-chain α-ketoacid dehydrogenase complex, which results in elevations of the branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) in plasma, α-ketoacids in urine, and production of the pathognomonic disease marker, alloisoleucine. The disorder varies in severity and the clinical spectrum is quite broad with five recognized clinical variants that have no known association with genotype. The classic presentation occurs in the neonatal period with developmental delay, failure to thrive, feeding difficulties, and maple

In Parkinson's disease (PD), there is increasing evidence for disorders in the impulsive-compulsive spectrum, related to the disease itself, to the pharmacological management of this disease or to both. These disorders comprise dopamine deficiency syndrome (with immediate reward seeking behaviour), dopamine dependency syndrome (with addictive behaviour), dopamine dysregulation syndrome (with both addictive behaviour and stereotyped behaviour) and impulse control disorders (such as pathological gambling, compulsive shopping, binge eating and hypersexuality). These disorders are especially seen

Little is known regarding how repetitive finger movement performance impacts other fine motor control tasks, such as circle drawing, in persons with Parkinson's disease (PD). Previous research has shown that impairments in repetitive finger movements emerge at rates near to and above 2 Hz in most persons with PD. Thus, the purpose of this study was to compare circle drawing performance in persons with PD that demonstrate impairment in repetitive finger movement and those that do not. Twenty-two participants with PD and twelve healthy older adults completed the study. Only participants with PD

Mirror apraxia is a condition in which patients with lesions of the posterior parietal cortex have deficits in reaching to objects presented through a mirror. The aim of the present study was to investigate possible mechanisms underlying this disorder. First, we addressed the question of whether mirror apraxia is exhibited to the same extent in peripersonal and in body space. Four patients with lesions of the posterior parietal lobe on either side and with marked mirror apraxia were required to reach for objects that were presented to them through a mirror and located either in body space (i.e

We report 5 girls presenting Rett syndrome. All of them were from south Tunisia. They fulfilled the Rett syndrome diagnosis criteria (The Rett syndrome diagnosis criteria work group, 1988). Pregnancy, birth and psychomotor development during the first year of live were normal. The mean age at the onset was 19.8 +/- 2.5 months. The two revealing symptoms were psychomotor regression (3 cases) and epilepsy (2 cases). They were admitted to our ward at a mean age of 4.7 +/- 1.5 years. Clinical presentation was typical of Rett syndrome. Mental retardation, stereotypic hand movement (hand washing/wri

Four patients with Rett syndrome had prominent abnormalities of breathing during active wakefulness, characterized by prolonged apnea intermixed with irregular and frequent respiratory movements. The apneic periods were associated with severe drops in O2 saturation, which assumed a periodic pattern. Respiration was regular during sleep and quiet wakefulness. These respiratory patterns seem characteristic of Rett syndrome and are probably related to impairment of the behavioral control system of respiration. These severe hypoxic episodes could contribute to permanent neurologic damage and secon
