Effect of hand splints on stereotypic hand behavior of three girls with Rett syndrome.

The purpose of this multiple baseline study was to examine the effect of bilateral hand splints on the persistent stereotypic hand movements of three adolescent girls with Rett syndrome. Among the most characteristic features of Rett syndrome are stereotypic hand-writing and hand-biting behavior and loss of previously acquired functional hand skills. The hand splints used in this study consisted of cuffs encircling the palm that positioned the subjects' thumbs in abduction. Duration percentages of subjects' stereotypic hand behavior and functional hand use were calculated from five-minute vide

Climbing and stereotyped behaviours in mice require the stimulation of D-1 dopamine receptors.

Apomorphine-induced climbing and sniffing behaviours in mice were antagonize by low doses of SCH 23390 and metoclopramide. The selective D-2 dopamine receptor agonists, LY 171555 and RU 24926, and some other dopamine agonists (piribedil, lergotrile, bromocriptine) exerted only inhibitory effects on spontaneous behaviours. The selective D-1 dopamine receptor agonist, SK&F 38393, did not modify the climbing score but increased the sniffing and decreased the gnawing scores compared to the scores of control mice. Typical climbing and stereotyped behaviours were produced by the combination of SK&F

Testosterone-attenuated stereotype and hyperactivity induced by beta-phenylethylamine in pargyline-pretreated rats.

Testosterone pretreatment (1.0-4.0 mg/kg) attenuated, in a dose-response fashion, the induction of stereotyped behavior and hyperactivity by pargyline (0.25, 4.0 mg/kg) and beta-phenylethylamine (8.0, 16.0 mg/kg) in preubertal, male rats. The dyskinetic movements induced by pargyline and beta-phenylethylamine were proposed as a possible animal model for tardive dyskinesias. Attenuation by testosterone of these effects suggested an hormonal involvement consistent with the reported predominant occurrence of tardive dyskinesias in women and in the elderly.

A comparative study of different amphetamines on copulatory behavior and stereotype activity in the female rat.

The influence of D- and L-amphetamine, fenfluramine, and p-chloroamphetamine on female copulatory behavior (lordosis response) and the induction of stereotype activity was compared. Lordosis response in the female rat has been shown to be inhibited by increased central nervous serotonergic (5-HT) as well as dopaminergic (DA) activity. A dose-dependent inhibitory effect on the estrogen- + progesterone-induced lordosis response in ovariectomized rats was demonstrated after treatment with the four amphetamines. In contrast, only D- and L-amphetamine induced a stereotype activity, which is conside

Reinforcing the stereotype: an analysis of AI-generated images of patients with obstructive sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is stereotypically a condition of the middle-aged, obese, snoring man, a depiction that obscures the true diversity of vast affected populations. The growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) text-to-image generators for medical applications risks further reinforcement of this bias through prejudiced visual depictions of disease. We analyzed 1,000 images generated by ChatGPT-4o using the prompt "Person with obstructive sleep apnea" to evaluate demographics represented in its portrayals of OSA. ChatGPT-4o consistently portrayed individuals as middle-aged (98.3%),

Effects of Diagnostic Labels for Students With Learning Problems on Teachers' Stereotypes and Performance Expectations.

Labeling students with learning problems may change teachers' evaluations of them. Our study examined whether the "Special Learning Needs" (SLN) and "Learning Disability" (LD) labels influenced teachers' beliefs that the diagnosis was correct and activated a low-competence stereotype. We examined whether this stereotype lowered teachers' performance expectations and teaching intentions. A sample of 413 German general and special education teachers were randomly assigned to the control (no label) or one of the experimental groups (SLN/LD label). All teachers read the description of a fictitious

Effects of Forage-to-Concentrate Ratio on Abnormal Stereotypic Behavior in Lambs and Goat Kids.

A crucial component of small ruminant production, particularly where intensive systems are becoming more prevalent, is determining the forage-to-concentrate (F:C) ratio in their daily diets. The effects of the F:C ratio in lambs and goat kids' daily diets on growth, stereotypical behavior, and blood biochemical parameters were investigated. Eighteen Tahirova sheep lambs and 18 Turkish Saanen goat kids were used, divided into three groups using the following F:C ratios: 20:80, 60:40, and 80:20. Growth rates, weight gains, and feed conversion ratios were determined. Urea nitrogen, glucose, non-e

Stereotypical love: a cluster analysis of self-presentation strategies in tinder profile pictures.

BACKGROUND: Although dating apps are the preferred means of meeting sexual and romantic partners, users frequently experience disappointment, highlighting the importance of understanding self-presentation strategies and selection processes to mitigate negative experiences. AIM: This study examines self-presentation strategies in Tinder profile pictures, aiming to identify typological patterns, characterize common profile-building strategies, and analyze differences by age, gender, and sexual orientation. METHODS: We employed a mixed dimensional approach-both categorical and numerical-to char

Age-based stereotype threat effects on dynamic balance in healthy older adults.

INTRODUCTION: Stereotype threat can lead older adults to perceive their experiences in a biased manner, giving rise to interfering thoughts and negative emotions that generate stress and anxiety. Negative beliefs about aging may serve as an additional factor that increases the need for attentional demand, potentially resulting in a performance level below their actual capabilities. In the present study, we asked whether negative aging stereotypes influence a dynamic balance task and explored the means to counteract them in healthy elderly participants. METHODS: The performance of balance was

Big Is Bad: Stereotypes About Organizational Size, Profit-Seeking, and Corporate Ethicality.

Individuals tend to hold a dim view of for-profit corporations, believing that profit-seeking comes at the expense of ethicality. In the present research, we show that this belief is not universal; rather, people associate ethicality with an organization's size. Across nine experiments (N = 4,796), people stereotyped large companies as less ethical than small companies. This size-ethicality stereotype emerged spontaneously (Study 1), implicitly (Study 2), and across industries (Study 3). Moreover, we find this stereotype can be partly explained by perceptions of profit-seeking behavior (Supple

Compensation strategy of shoulder synergist muscles is not stereotypical in patients with rotator cuff repair.

Rotator cuff tear is a common shoulder injury that causes shoulder dysfunction and pain. Although surgical repair is the primary treatment for rotator cuff tear, it is well recognized that impaired force exertion of muscles connecting to the involved tendon and subsequent complemental change in the force exertion of synergist muscles persist even after repair. This study aimed to identify the compensation strategy of shoulder abductors by examining how synergist muscles respond to supraspinatus (SSP) muscle force deficit in patients with rotator cuff repair. Muscle shear modulus, an index of m

Clonal evolution and stereotyped sequences of human IgE lineages in aeroallergen-specific immunotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Allergic disease reflects specific inflammatory processes initiated by interaction between allergen and allergen-specific IgE. Specific immunotherapy (SIT) is an effective long-term treatment option, but the mechanisms by which SIT provides desensitization are not well understood. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to characterize IgE sequences expressed by allergen-specific B cells over a 3-year longitudinal study of patients with aeroallergies who were undergoing SIT. METHODS: Allergen-specific IgE-expressing clones were identified by using combinatorial single-chain variable fragment libr

Developmental impact of glutamate transporter overexpression on dopaminergic neuron activity and stereotypic behavior.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disabling condition that often begins in childhood. Genetic studies in OCD have pointed to SLC1A1, which encodes the neuronal glutamate transporter EAAT3, with evidence suggesting that increased expression contributes to risk. In mice, midbrain Slc1a1 expression supports repetitive behavior in response to dopaminergic agonists, aligning with neuroimaging and pharmacologic challenge studies that have implicated the dopaminergic system in OCD. These findings suggest that Slc1a1 may contribute to compulsive behavior through altered dopaminergic transmissio

Risperidone on apomorphine-induced stereotyped behavior and auditory sensory gating in rhesus monkeys.

The ameliorating effect of risperidone on apomorphine-induced stereotyped behavior and inhibition of auditory sensory gating was investigated using rhesus monkeys. The total duration of the stereotyped behavior observed in the control group was 43.7 ± 23.0 s (n = 3) between 10 and 25 min after vehicle administration, whereas the duration in the apomorphine-treated (0.1 or 0.15 mg/kg i.m., n = 3) group was observed to be significantly prolonged to 413.0 ± 150.6 s. Administration of 0.01, 0.03, 0.1 mg/kg of risperidone 60 min before apomorphine, significantly reduced the duration of this apomorp

Repetitive and stereotyped behaviors in neurodevelopmental disorders: an observational analysis of four diagnostic groups.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive and Stereotyped Behaviors (ST) are one of the key features of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and they frequently occur in children with developmental delay/intellectual disability or sensory deprivation, but they are also described in children otherwise typical. This study aims to describe and compare ST in children with different neurodevelopmental disorders and in children having stereotypies but no other medical diagnosis (primary stereotypies). METHODS: The study sample comprised children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) developmental delay (DD), severe visual im
