Radiographic, computed tomographic and magnetic resonance imaging evaluation of a chronic long digital extensor tendon avulsion in a dog.

Long digital extensor tendon avulsion is reported in a 5 month old Great Dane. Clinically the dog presented with a unilateral weight-bearing pelvic limb lameness. Joint effusion was present and there was pain and crepitance associated with flexion of the stifle. Orthopedic evaluation and radiographs were suggestive of a long digital extensor tendon injury which was confirmed by computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. The injury was surgically repaired with screw and spiked washer fixation.

Filoviruses Infect Rhesus Macaque Synoviocytes in Vivo and Primary Human Synoviocytes in Vitro.

The most commonly reported symptom of post-Ebola virus disease syndrome in survivors is arthralgia, yet involvement of the joints in acute or convalescent Ebola virus infection is not well characterized in human patients or animal models. Through immunohistochemistry, we found that the lining synovial intima of the stifle (knee) is a target for acute infection by Ebola virus/Kikwit, Ebola virus/Makona-C05, and Marburg virus/Angola in the rhesus macaque model. Furthermore, histologic analysis, immunohistochemistry, RNAscope in situ hybridization, and transmission electron microscopy showed that…

Reduced anterior tibial translation associated with adaptive changes in the anterior cruciate ligament-deficient joint: goat model.

Adaptive changes in the menisci and adjacent posterior capsule were documented within anterior cruciate ligament-deficient knee (stifle) joints in the goat model. These physical changes in the menisci and capsule developed over time and were associated with reduction in the initial (time zero) abnormal anterior tibial translation following transection of the anterior cruciate ligament. At 50 N of applied force, the normal goat knee joint has a total anterior-posterior translation of 0.6+/-0.1 mm (+/- SEM) at 45 degrees of flexion and 0.3+/-0.1 mm at 90 degrees. The translation immediately afte…

Spontaneous Urinary Bladder Leiomyoma in a Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta).

Here we report the case of a urinary bladder leiomyoma in a rhesus macaque. The animal was clinically normal and had a lipoma localized to the stifle. Endovesicular leiomyomas are the most common form of urinary bladder leiomyoma in humans. In contrast, this macaque's tumor exhibited extravesicular localization in the bladder. Urinary bladder leiomyomas account for less than 0.5% of all bladder tumors in humans, with only 250 cases reported in total.

Septic polyarthritis caused by Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae in a dog.

A 14-month-old, male German Shepherd dog was admitted with a six-week history of lameness and swelling of the right hindlimb. Clinical examination revealed polyarthritis, fever, petechiae and ecchymoses of the abdominal skin and prepuce. The haematology and blood chemistry were indicative of sepsis. Mediolateral radiographic views of both of the stifle joints revealed signs of bilateral articular capsule swelling. The radiographical, bacteriological and necropsy findings confirmed a diagnosis of septic polyarthritis due to infection with Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae.

Osteochondrosis, degenerative joint disease, and vertebral osteophytosis in middle-aged bulls.

Twenty-five middle-age (65 +/- 18 months) dairy bulls sent to slaughter for nonmedical reasons were evaluated for joint disease in the stifle and the lumbar vertebrae. Fourteen bulls had degenerative joint disease and 3 had osteochondrosis (osteochondritis dissecans) of the distal end of the femur. These lesions predominantly involved the lateral trochlear ridge. Twenty-one bulls had vertebral osteophytosis. Degenerative joint disease and vertebral osteophytosis were common in these middle-aged bulls and, even when severe, were rarely associated with lameness.
