Post-traumatic stress disorder in inpatient psychiatry staff: a narrative review.

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare workers have high rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The aim of this study is to provide a narrative review of the literature on PTSD in psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, and other healthcare staff working on psychiatric inpatient units. METHODS: A search was conducted on MEDLINE for studies in English. Studies were included if they studied a population of inpatient psychiatric staff and had PTSD as an outcome measure. Of the 1487 articles the search returned, 26 were included. RESULTS: Rates of post-traumatic stress ranged from 0% to 24%, depending on

Biomarkers and Mechanisms of Cardiovascular Susceptibility and Resilience to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which develops in susceptible individuals after life-threatening or traumatizing events, manifests as a heightened anxiety and startle reflex, disordered sleep, nightmares, flashbacks, and avoidance of triggers. Moreover, PTSD is a predictor and independent risk factor of numerous cardiovascular comorbidities, including stroke, myocardial infarction, coronary atherosclerosis, and atrial fibrillation. Compounding the direct detrimental effects of PTSD on the cardiovascular system, this condition provokes classical cardiovascular risk factors, including hig

The association between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and executive functioning.

Introduction: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a condition characterised by several disturbances in an individual's executive functioning. We were interested in the link between executive functions and the presence of anxiety and depression in a clinical population with post-traumatic stress disorder. Methods: Our sample comprised 180 participants divided into three groups: 60 with PTSD, 60 trauma-exposed without PTSD, and 60 controls. All participants were assessed on the following dimensions: PTSD, dissociation, executive functions, anxiety, and depression. Results: Consistent with the

Innate and adaptive immune system consequences of post-traumatic stress disorder.

In the field of psychiatry, biological markers are rarely, if ever, used in the diagnosis of mental health disorders. Clinicians rely primarily on patient histories and behavioral symptoms to identify specific psychopathologies, which makes diagnosis highly subjective. Moreover, therapies for mental health disorders are aimed specifically at attenuating behavioral manifestations, which overlooks the pathophysiological indices of the disease. This is highly evident in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) where inflammation and immune system perturbations are becoming increasingly described. Fur

Neuroanatomical and functional correlates in post-traumatic stress disorder: A narrative review.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), currently included by the Diagnostic and Statistical of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision in the macro-category "disorders related to traumatic and stressful events", is a severe mental distress that arises acutely as a result of direct or indirect exposure to severely stressful and traumatic events. A large body of literature is available on the psychological and behavioral manifestations of PTSD; however, with regard to the more purely neuropsychological aspects of the disorder, they are still the subject of research and need greater clarit

Advancing the understanding and treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder with computational modelling.

The existing theories of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have inspired large volumes of research and have contributed substantially to our current knowledge base. However, most of the theories are of a qualitative and verbal nature, and may be difficult to evaluate and compare with each other. In this paper, we propose that one way forward is to use computational modelling to formulate more precise theories of PTSD that can be evaluated by (1) assessing whether the model can explain fundamental phenomena related to PTSD, and (2) comparing simulated outcomes with real data. Computational

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for post-traumatic stress disorder in adults.

BACKGROUND: The estimated lifetime prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adults worldwide has been estimated at 3.9%. PTSD appears to contribute to alterations in neuronal network connectivity patterns. Current pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatments for PTSD are associated with inadequate symptom improvement and high dropout rates. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), a non-invasive therapy involving induction of electrical currents in cortical brain tissue, may be an important treatment option for PTSD to improve remission rates and for people who ca

Post-Traumatic Stress-Disorder in Epilepsy: Meta-analysis of current evidence.

Epilepsy, a chronic neurological condition characterized by unpredictable seizures, poses considerable challenges, including disability, stigma, and increased mortality. Psychiatric comorbidities are prevalent in 20-30% of epilepsy patients, notably mood or anxiety disorders, psychotic symptoms, and personality disorders. Trauma and childhood adversities are pivotal risk factors for psychopathology, yet the link between Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and epilepsy remains underexplored. This meta-analysis is aimed to establish updated estimates of PTSD prevalence among individuals with e

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Risk of Parkinson's Disease in a Veteran Cohort.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may be a risk factor for Parkinson's disease (PD). We examined the relation between PTSD and PD in a cohort of 158,122 Veterans who had any Veterans Health Administration (VHA) or Medicare health care utilization between 10/1/1999- 2/17/2021. Using a nested case-control design we matched 10 controls to each Veteran with PD by sex, race, and rank. In conditional logistic regression models adjusted for camp and smoking, a PTSD diagnosis was significantly associated with PD (OR = 1.35; p = 0.0002); odds were higher if PTSD was coded before PD (OR = 1.53, p <

Probiotic treatment improves post-traumatic stress disorder outcomes in mice.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental disorder resulting from traumatic events which are characterized primarily by anxiety and depressive disorder. In this study, we determine the role of gut bacteria in PTSD. PTSD-like symptoms were produced by single prolonged stress (SPS). SPS animals showed increased levels of anxiety as measured by the elevated plus maze test, while depressive behaviour was confirmed using sucrose preference, force swim, and tail suspension tests. Gut dysbiosis was confirmed in PTSD animals by next-generation sequencing of 16 s RNA of faecal samples, while th

Development of the post-traumatic stress disorder assessment scale for emergency services.

This paper describes the development and validation of the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Assessment Scale for Emergency Services (PASES). The PASES was developed to address the needs of Australia's first National Mental Health and Wellbeing Study of Police and Emergency Services, Answering the Call (AtC) which covered Police, Ambulance, Fire and Rescue and State Emergency Services personnel. PASES offers several advantages for use in the emergency services sector over other Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) screening scales, including assessment of functional impairment, a dimensional mea

Effects of Antidepressants on Sleep in Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: An Overview of Reviews.

Antidepressants are a commonly used, easily accessible, and overall safe treatment option for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The present review aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of antidepressants in treating sleep disturbances in patients with PTSD. PubMed and the Cochrane Library were searched (July 2022) for systematic reviews and meta-analyses on the treatment of PTSD. Moreover, PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched for individual trials investigating the antidepressant treatment of PTSD (up to September 2022), and reference lists of all possibly relevant identified st

The association of post-traumatic stress disorder with glomerular filtration rate decline.

While major depression is known to be associated with glomerular filtration rate (GFR) decline, there is a lack of data on the association of other mental illnesses like posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with kidney disease. In 640 adult participants of the Heart and Soul Study (mean baseline age of 66.2 years) with a high prevalence cardiovascular disease, hypertension and diabetes, we examined the association of PTSD with GFR decline over a 5-year follow-up. We observed a significantly greater estimated (e) GFR decline over time in those with PTSD compared to those without (2.97 vs. 2.11

An orchestrating role of mitochondria in the origin and development of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the most discussed and actively researched areas in medicine, psychiatry, neurophysiology, biochemistry and rehabilitation over the last decades. Multiple causes can trigger post-traumatic stress disorder. Humans subjected to violence, participants in hostilities, victims of terrorist attacks, physical or psychological persecution, witnessing scenes of cruelty, survival of natural disasters, and more, can strongly affect both children and adults. Pathological features of post-traumatic stress disorder that are manifested at molecular, cellular an

Application of Deep Brain Stimulation in Refractory Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental disorder that produces crippling anxiety and occurs in response to an extreme, traumatic stressor. Compared to the prevalence of PTSD in the general population, the prevalence of PTSD in at-risk populations (e.g., army veterans, those affected by environmental calamities, and others) can reach up to threefold. The conventional treatment of PTSD involves using SSRIs (serotonin reuptake inhibitors) and other anti-depressants along with psychotherapy such as debriefing and CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy). Due to increasing resistance to convent
