South African university students' experiences of online group cognitive behavioural therapy: Implications for delivering digital mental health interventions to young people.

Mental disorders are common among university students. In the face of a large treatment gap, resource constraints and low uptake of traditional in-person psychotherapy services by students, there has been interest in the role that digital mental health solutions could play in meeting students' mental health needs. This study is a cross-sectional, qualitative inquiry into university students' experiences of an online group cognitive behavioural therapy (GCBT) intervention. A total of 125 respondents who had participated in an online GCBT intervention completed a qualitative questionnaire, and 1

Making long-acting HIV PrEP routine in college health: durable systems, not dedicated heroes.

For many U.S. students, college health is the practical home of primary care and their most direct point of access to HIV prevention. In this commentary I argue that HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), including long-acting cabotegravir and lenacapavir, should be offered as routine preventive care in college health rather than as a specialty service. Nearly all responding student health services in national benchmarking data offer STI and HIV testing and contraception, while far fewer offer PrEP or prompt clinicians to educate patients on PrEP. That gap, the June 2025 approval of lenacapavir,…

A protocol for a type 1 effectiveness-implementation randomized controlled trial of the WHO digital mental health intervention Step-by-Step to address depression among Chinese young adults in Macao (SAR), China.

BACKGROUND: Among Chinese college students, the burden of depression is considerably high, affecting up to 30 % of the population. Despite this burden, few Chinese students seek mental health treatment. In addition, depression is highly comorbid with other mental health disorders, such as anxiety. Scalable, transdiagnostic, evidence-based interventions are needed for this population. OBJECTIVE: The study will evaluate the effectiveness of a World Health Organization transdiagnostic digital mental health intervention, Step-by-Step, to reduce depressive and anxiety symptoms and improve well-bei

'High schools High on life': Development of an Intervention to Reduce Excessive Drinking in Danish High Schools.

Background: Clear documentation of the understanding of the problem, process of development, and content of interventions is essential to enable other researchers to understand why interventions succeed or fail and to enable researcher to build on previous evidence and replicate and adapt findings in other contexts. In this paper we describe the rationale, intervention development, and final design of the 'High schools High on life' intervention; a high school-based, multi-component intervention to reduce excessive drinking among Danish high school students. Methods: The development of the int

Psychiatric Characteristics, Symptoms of Insomnia and Depression, Emotion Regulation, and Social Activity among Swiss Medical Students.

Background: Almost by default, young adult students are at increased risk of suffering from mental health issues, and this holds particularly true for medical students. Indeed, compared to the general population and non-medical students, medical students report higher scores for symptoms of depression. For Swiss medical students, research on the associations between psychiatric characteristics and symptoms of depression and insomnia, including cognitive-emotional processes and social activity, has been lacking so far. Given this, the aims of the present study were to relate self-declared psych

Ukrainian students' conceptualisations of sexual and reproductive health and rights within a transformative learning programme during wartime: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education is particularly important in wartime Ukraine, where young people face disrupted access to services, persistent socio-cultural taboos, and increased vulnerability related to conflict. However, little is known about how Ukrainian students and future professionals understand and make sense of SRHR. OBJECTIVE: This study explored how SRHR was conceptualised in pre-course written responses and articulated in post-course focus group reflections, and how these framings related to students' future professional readiness in wartime

Students with chronic diseases: nature of school physician support.

BACKGROUND: To educate children with chronic diseases in the least restrictive environment, schools must prevent, recognize, and react appropriately to symptom exacerbations. Schools are often pushed to their limits of knowledge, resources, and comfort level. This study determined the health conditions of students for whom districts seek school physician consultation and the nature of school physician consultants' involvement. METHODS: A retrospective record review was performed on 250 of the most recent records of school-elicited referrals from an academic center that provides physician cons

Therapeutic Assessment in a University Counseling Center: A Replicated Single-Case Time-Series Pilot Study.

In this study, we pilot tested Therapeutic Assessment (TA) in a university counseling center using a replicated single-case design to generate hypotheses on the effectiveness and applicability for this setting and population. We aimed to see whether TA could be an effective brief intervention to address students' presenting mental health concerns. Further, we explored whether different types of presenting concerns were associated with differential symptomatic improvement during the intervention. An independent clinician interviewed participants before the baseline period to develop individuali

Breast self-examination among college women: predictors for cancer control.

Monthly breast self-examination (BSE) to aid in the early diagnosis of breast cancer is advocated for all adult women, but regular and competent practice is unusual. Our purpose was to explore the associations between young women's reported cancer history, BSE training, demographic variables (predictors), self-reported frequency of BSE, BSE skill level, breast lump detection ability, confidence, and anxiety (outcome variables). A general health history questionnaire was administered to 73 female university students, faculty, and staff. BSE skill and detection ability were measured by observati

Alcohol, drugs, and links to sexual risk behaviors among a sample of Virginia college students.

This project was significant in that it administered the National College Health Risk Behavior Survey (NCHRBS), a health risk assessment, to a sample of students at three public universities in Virginia. Virginia was never included in the original or subsequent nationwide assessments using this instrument. This health risk assessment is comprehensive, easy to administer, and free. The NCHRBS assesses risk behaviors in six categories including: (1) behaviors that contribute to unintentional and intentional injuries; (2) tobacco use; (3) alcohol and other drug use; (4) sexual behaviors that cont

Incidence of Infectious Mononucleosis in Universities and U.S. Military Settings.

OBJECTIVE: The reported incidence rates for Infectious Mononucleosis (IM) within universities and military settings vary widely from study to study. Several factors may have contributed to the discrepancy in these incidence rates include misdiagnosis, ambiguity in the reported sample populations, and number of students who visited and were diagnosed at their campus's health service centers. The current review examines previously reported literature on the incidence rate in universities and military settings of infectious mononucleosis taking into account these possible confounding factors. Support systems impacting the mental health of diverse women in biomedical science programs: An ecological approach.

Biomedical doctoral trainees experience high rates of mental health distress compared to the general population. Minoritized students are particularly vulnerable to psychological stress during training due to systemic factors including discrimination, bullying, financial constraints, high workloads and constant critical feedback. As such, the mental health of minoritized biomedical trainees is both a social justice and health equity issue. We examined longitudinal narratives of 33 Asian, Black and Latiné women in biomedical doctoral programs to understand how they constructed support systems t

Creating a Pathway to Health-Care Professions for Historically Marginalized Students.

Developing a diverse talent pool starting at the high-school level, while students are making future education and career decisions, should be a national priority, given the need to build a diverse health-care workforce. This article describes a 6-week immersive simulation-based summer program to introduce 20 junior high-school students (13-15 years old) to the range of health professions. Because precollege students typically receive limited exposure to clinical settings, high-fidelity simulation is an excellent surrogate for providing realistic experiences in health care. Students heard lect

Barriers to medication abortion among Massachusetts public university students.

OBJECTIVE: Proposed legislation in Massachusetts would require public university health centers to provide medication abortion services on campus. This study assesses need for these services by investigating current travel time, costs, wait times and insurance acceptance at off-campus, abortion-providing facilities nearest to public universities in Massachusetts. STUDY DESIGN: This investigation projected the total number of students obtaining medication abortions each year at the 13 Massachusetts public universities based on campus enrollment figures and age- and state-adjusted medication ab
