Inhalation of sulphur dioxide (250 ppm), (SO2) or sodium metabisulfite (80 mM) (MBS) aerosol or perfusion with MBS (3 mM) induced a reduction in compliance and conductance in the isolated, perfused and ventilated guinea pig lung. Pretreatment of the lung with sodium sulfite (3 mM), a dissolution product of SO2 and MBS, reduced the bronchoconstriction induced by SO2 and MBS. Bronchoconstriction induced by SO2 and MBS in associated to increased levels of Calcitonin gene-Related Peptide (CGRP) in the perfusate effinent, indicating activation of sensory nerves. The release of CGRP induced by SO2 a

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a common air pollutant found in the workplace. Considerable variation exists in the airway responses of asthmatics to the inhalation of SO2. To determine if such variation among asthmatics is related to nonspecific airway reactivity, we compared the threshold doses of methacholine and SO2 required to produce significant changes in flow rates at 60% of the vital capacity below total lung capacity on the partial expiratory flow volume curve in a group of eight mildly asthmatic subjects. A significant correlation between the dose of SO2 and the dose of methacholine require…

The affinity of patulin for sulfur dioxide (SO2) is much less than was previously reported and is of little significance at the SO2 concentrations (below 200 ppm) used in the processing of apple juice and cider. However, at concentrations of 2000 ppm SO2 and 15 ppm patulin, combination was 90% complete in 2 days. Removal of SO2 liberated only part of the patulin, which suggests that 2 mechanisms are involved: one reversible (opening the hemiacetal ring) and one irreversible (SO2 addition at the double bond). Test with 2 yeasts used in English commercial cider making confirmed that patulin is e…

Investigations were conducted, with the view to establishing short-time effects of SO2 alone and in combination with power station fly-ash as well as long-time effects of SO2 on broiler. The experimental concentrations up to 16 X 330 ppm did not reveal any deterimental impact upon live weight or feed consumption. Histological, haematological, and clinico-chemical tests indicated that damage was caused only by highly repetitive short-time exposure to very high SO2 concentrations (330 ppm), such damage being reflected in slight increase of erythrocyte count, lowered colour index, rise in SGPT ac

BACKGROUND: Plasma sulfur amino acids (SAAs), i.e., methionine, total cysteine (tCys), total homocysteine (tHcy), cystathionine, total glutathione (tGSH), and taurine, are potential risk factors for obesity and cardiometabolic disorders. However, except for plasma tHcy, little is known about how dietary intake modifies plasma SAA concentrations.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the intake of SAAs and proteins or diet quality is associated with plasma SAAs.
METHODS: Data from a cross-sectional subset of The Maastricht Study (n = 1145, 50.5% men, 61 interquartile range: [55, 66] y, 22.5% with…

Sulfur-fertilizer is commonly applied in croplands and in immobilizing Hg in contaminated soil. However, there is still great uncertainty and controversy concerning Hg transportability and transformation when supplying sulfur in paddies with complex conditions. Herein, we explored the effect of adding sulfate in paddy soil at different rice growth stages on soil Hg release and MeHg accumulation in rice and uncovered the correlation between sulfur induced MeHg production and the dynamically changed soil Eh, dissolved Fe, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). In specific, sulfate addition at early…

Groups of cynomolgus monkeys and guinea pigs were exposed to mixtures of sulfur dioxide, fly ash, and sulfuric acid mist. The exposure concentrations varied between 0.1 and 5.0 ppm for sulfur dioxide, 0.1 and 1 mg/cu m for sulfuric acid mist, while a concentration of approximately 0.5 mg/cu m was used for fly ash. The duration of exposure was 52 weeks for guinea-pigs and 78 weeks for monkeys. Pulmonary function tests and serum biochemical and hematological analyses were conducted prior to and periodically during the exposure period. At the termination of exposure, the lungs were examined micro…

Non-covalent interactions between sulfur centers and aromatic rings play important roles in biological chemistry. We examined here the sulfur-arene interactions between the fused aromatic heterocycle benzofuran and two prototype sulfur divalent triatomics (sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide). The weakly-bound adducts were generated in a supersonic jet expansion and characterized with broadband (chirped-pulsed) time-domain microwave spectroscopy. The rotational spectrum confirmed the detection of a single isomer for both heterodimers, consistent with the computational predictions for the globa…
