Oculofacial plastic surgery in the cancer patient: A narrative review.

With the advances in systemic therapy and radiotherapy, the life expectancy of patients battling cancer has increased. The oculofacial plastic surgeon should be aware of the potential impacts a patient in remission or one being actively treated may pose. The goal of this review is to discuss the considerations a surgeon should have in this patient population.MethodsThe authors performed a computerized search using PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar. The search terms used were "chemotherapy AND surgery", "immunotherapy AND surgery", "radiotherapy AND surgery", "nutrition AND surgery", "(oculopl

Cutaneous Mycobacterium Abscessus Infection Following Plastic Surgery: Three Case Reports.

AIM: Mycobacterium abscessus is ubiquitous in the environment and seldom causes infections in immunocompetent individuals. However, skin and soft tissue infections caused by M. abscessus have been reported in recent years. Additionally, the cutaneous infections or outbreaks post cosmetic surgery caused by M. abscessus have been increasing due to the popularity of plastic surgery. The main modes of transmission are through contaminated saline, disinfectants, or surgery equipment, as well as close contact between patients. This article describes three patients who were admitted to our hospital b

Human-Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

A hallmark of plastic and reconstructive surgery is restoring form and function. Historically, tissue procured from healthy portions of a patient's body has been used to fill defects, but this is limited by tissue availability. Human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) are stem cells derived from the de-differentiation of mature somatic cells. hiPSCs are of particular interest in plastic surgery as they have the capacity to be re-differentiated into more mature cells, and cultured to grow tissues. This review aims to evaluate the applications of hiPSCs in the plastic surgery context, with

Management of Acute Surgical Pain in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Fewer than half of all patients undergoing surgery report adequate postoperative pain relief. Poorly managed postoperative pain can lead to complications, increased hospital stays, prolonged rehabilitation, and a decreased quality of life. Pain rating scales are commonly used to identify, manage, and track the perceived intensity of pain. Changes in perceived pain severity and intensity are a key indicator for course of treatment. Postoperative pain is best treated with multimodal management with a variety of analgesic medications and techniques that target different receptors and mechanisms o

Level of Evidence on Platelet-rich Plasma in Plastic Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Despite the increased popularity of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in plastic surgery, there is no detailed analysis on the level of evidence on PRP use in plastic surgery. As the number of applications of PRP in plastic surgery increases, it is important for plastic surgeons to understand the scientific and validated evidence behind its use. Therefore, we performed a literature review to identify current level of evidence on platelet-rich plasma in plastic surgery. METHODS: We performed a computerized search of platelet-rich plasma in plastic surgery using the MEDLINE, Cochran Librar

Adventures and Misadventures in Plastic Surgery and Soft-Tissue Implants.

Soft-tissue augmentation and implants are increasingly seen by the radiologist as more techniques emerge for a variety of indications and locations. Some surgical and implant procedures are performed for purely cosmetic reasons in otherwise healthy patients seeking to improve their body image, and some are performed for reconstruction after cancer or other chronic illnesses. Abdominoplasty, liposuction, and autologous fat grafting can be performed for abdominal and gluteal contouring. Injection of liquid injectable silicone has historically been fraught with legal issues, although it continues

Computer Simulation and Digital Resources for Plastic Surgery Psychomotor Education.

Contemporary plastic surgery residents are increasingly challenged to learn a greater number of complex surgical techniques within a limited period. Surgical simulation and digital education resources have the potential to address some limitations of the traditional training model, and have been shown to accelerate knowledge and skills acquisition. Although animal, cadaver, and bench models are widely used for skills and procedure-specific training, digital simulation has not been fully embraced within plastic surgery. Digital educational resources may play a future role in a multistage strate

[Principles of plastic pediatric surgery: Thirty years of surgical practice].

In this document, Pr Guy Magalon presents a reflection on the plastic pediatric surgery drawn from 30 years of surgical practice. His thinking is supported by several examples of plastic surgery results from children reviewed in adulthood. These cases highlight the evolution of surgical practices and the need for continuing education for surgeons to adapt to technical progress. Professor Magalon honors his masters and shares his personal vision of the principles of pediatric plastic surgery.

Early Practice Focus: Evidence-Based Practice in Facial Plastic Surgery.

The practice of evidence-based medicine combines physician experience, knowledge of current literature, and patient preferences. Different grading systems are used to evaluate current levels of evidence and recommendations. A variety of common instruments are used to measure outcomes in facial plastic surgery. These instruments are used for expert data collection, including assessment of pathology and response to treatment, or for patient-reported outcome measures, including quality of life, disability, and daily function. Integration of data collection requires storage and protection of healt

[Bariatric and plastic surgery in obese adolescents: an alternative treatment].

The increased frequency of extreme forms of obesity in adolescents and the disappointing results of conventional treatments are now leading pediatricians to consider bariatric or cosmetic surgery as the only real long-term effective therapeutic alternative. The two main techniques currently used for bariatric surgery in adolescents are gastric bypass and adjustable gastric banding. Whatever the technique, weight loss is significant with improvement of comorbidities and quality of life. In addition, the complications are identical to those in adults and equally frequent. However, because of the

Registries and evidence-based medicine in craniofacial and plastic surgery.

Evidence-based medicine is a vital process for maintaining and improving quality and value in health care. However, evidence-based practice is most limited by the availability of research and outcomes data. Although randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have been identified by numerous research organizations as the criterion standard for research methodology (eg, "level I evidence"), the execution of well-designed RCTs has proved either challenging or impossible in many surgical fields and with rare disease conditions. In particular, craniofacial and plastic surgery has been noted to be lacking

[Factitious disorder and self-mutilation in hand and plastic surgery].

Self-mutilation in the context of factitious disorder can lead to prolonged and complicated treatment in every medical field. Because of a prevalence of 1-5% in hospitalised patients, it is important to be aware of this disorder to protect patients from self- and foreign-induced harm. Often the patient history gives important hints. The different manifestations of this disorder, the specific doctor-patient relationship, several techniques of confrontation and current treatment are presented. Clinical cases from the fields of hand and plastic surgery are presented.
